Happy 2008!
Welcome to the January issue of my newsletter.
The guest author this month is the talented Liz Jasper. Find out more about Liz and her work by reading her interview and excerpt below.
This year I have several new stories coming up, including the Carnal 2 series. Also the fifth book in my Horsemen series, Victory Stallion, has recently been accepted by Ellora's Cave. This book features Wilder, who was introduced as Luther's friend and fellow Fighting Carrier in Winter Stallion.
Earlier this month the second story in The Masters series, called Tarak, was released by Changeling Press. An excerpt from Tarak is included toward the end of this newsletter. Next month the last story in The Masters series, Samson, is scheduled for release. This is slightly different than the first two books since it focuses on a vampire trio, Samson, Cortez, and Jendaya.
Have a great month and see you in February. Feel free to drop me an email at katehill@sprintmail.com or katehill2@yahoo.com with any questions or comments.

Raptvyns' Rogue
(m/m/f shapeshifter ménage)
From Ellora's CaveA rogue raptor, scarred and shunned by his flock, Zamiel has survived as a mercenary and hunter for hire. After finding a wounded Raptvyn called Arno and nursing him back to health, Zamiel can't deny the searing passion between them. Their mutual friend Mitzi has been trying to find a way to convince Zamiel to mate with her permanently. Seeing the males together, she realizes they would make a perfect traditional Raptvyn trio. The three generate enough heat to melt a glacier, but luring Zamiel into commitment won't be easy.
Zamiel thought his violent past had destroyed his chances for finding love, but Arno and Mitzi bring him unimaginable pleasure in every way. He swore never to put flock before family, but with everything on the line, he could lose it all.
The Masters: Rune
(erotic vampire)
From Changeling PressRune was the first Master of Ecstasy to complete Ivans course at the vampire haven Sunlight of the Soul and is among the most sought after guides for the sexual gauntlet. While he has brought countless visitors unimaginable pleasure, he has never lost his heart to one, until he meets Doe.
Doe is tired of her fledgling ignorance and wants to prove to herself that she can endure the sexual gauntlet. Neither she nor Master Rune has any intention of falling in love, but the fates have other ideas for these two vampires -- one of the old world and one from the new.
The Masters: Tarak
(erotic vampire)
From Changeling PressWhen Deva leaves Tarak after a thousand-year marriage, he returns to his master at Sunlight of the Soul and becomes a Master of Ecstasy. Though he hasn't lost his magnetism and skills in the ways of love, his heart is cold without Deva.
To his surprise, she follows him to Sunlight of the Soul and asks him to guide her through the sexual gauntlet. Knowing her, he realizes her point might not be to rekindle their love, but to prove that they should make their split permanent.
Even so, he vows that by the end of their night together, she will be begging him to take her back.

GUEST AUTHOR INTERVIEW: LIZ JASPER
KH: Would you tell us about your book, Underdead?
LJ: Underdead is the story of Jo Gartner, a floundering, new middle school science teacher who thinks things are finally looking up when a gorgeous hunk of masculinity rescues her from a horrifically boring science department dinner until he sinks his teeth into her neck, turning her almost into a vampire. She's not quite undead, merely Underdead -- all the problems of being a vampire, none of the perks.
When she finds a body on her classroom floor with teeth marks in his neck, she must figure out who did it...a vampire or your regular run-of-the-mill killer-- before her Underdead secret gets out. But she's running out of time. The handsome detective in charge of the case is dogging her every move, the deadly vampire seems to be courting her, her vampire traits are evolving in new and embarrassing ways, and someone wants Jo dead the traditional way.
KH: What projects are you currently working on?
LJ: Underdead is the first Jo Gartner book in what I've planned as a series of at least four books. I just finished the second book in the series...just as Underdead is coming out in a print version (it is currently available as an ebook). How's that for timing? I'll start writing the third book in the Underdead mystery series soon. In the meantime, I'm putting in some time on a romance novel I'm writing, for a change of pace.
KH: What do you enjoy most about writing about vampires?
LJ: I enjoy playing with the fact that, like any rational person, Jo Gartner knows vampires don't really exist outside of fiction -- until she finds herself turning into one. And even then, because she lives in the real world with rational-minded people, she has to come up with logical explanations as to why she has all these strange new problems, like being unable to tolerate sunlight. Because no one would believe her if she told them the truth. Would you?
And yet, as much as the vampire element can be funny or sexy or what have you, there will always be times when you can't possibly put a positive spin on what's happening to Jo. There's a constant clash between Jo's rational world and the paranormal vampire world and a constant tug-of-war between the vampire-hating detective who desperately wants Jo to stay --normal-- and the vampire who is determined that Jo will join him of her own free will...or otherwise. It's that push-pull of humor and pathos that keeps Jo interesting for me to write about.
KH: Do you have any particular writing habits, such as listening to music or writing at a particular time of day?
LJ: I tend to like things quiet when I'm doing the actual writing. But when I'm plotting, I tend to crank up Vivaldi's Four Seasons. I know, --crank-- and --Vivaldi-- don't normally go in the same sentence. But that's what I do. There you go. Writers are weird.
And then if I'm really stuck, I go for a long walk. I worked out a tricky aspect in the sequel to Underdead on mile five of a hike last summer...and had to hunker down on a tiny rock while I feverishly wrote it out with a pencil stub on the couple of Post-it's I'd fit into my pack. And if walking doesn't work, I pull out the big guns. By which I mean I torture the nearest available family member with long, boring, mostly one-sided conversations about what I'm working on.
KH: What inspires you to write?
LJ: I get these remarkably clear scenes in my head, words and all, and have to write them down. If I don't, the scene just repeats the next time I close my eyes, only slightly less clear -- again and again -- until I can't take it anymore and write the darn thing down. And by that time, it's muddled. So the long run, it's easier if I just write. Don't confuse that with --it's easy to write.-- It isn't. Those times when the right words seem to fly across the page on their own are all too rare.
KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
LJ: That's hard. I admit to a secret crush on the detective. But, assuming I wouldn't come off worse for wear, I'd love to meet Will, the vampire. Apart from being the sort of perfectly gorgeous man you only dream up in your head, he is such a fascinating contradiction. For centuries, Will has gotten what he wants when he wants it, and by now is finding the hedonistic vampire lifestyle a little... old. (Sorry, couldn't resist.) He's wiled away much of his time reading, philosophy in particular, and can't help but be intrigued by a slightly straight-laced woman who can hold her own in a conversation with him.
And that's when my caveat that I'd come away from Will intact comes into play. As much as it may appeal to Will to interact with a woman as if he were a regular man, he isn't. He's a very charming vampire. And spending time with him is playing with fire.
KH: Do you have a website, blog, newsletter or email where readers can reach you?
LJ: My website is www.lizjasper.com. I myspace as Jo Gartner of Underdead at www.myspace.com/underdeadauthor and we Cerridwen Press authors have a new group on myspace, which everyone is welcome to join http://groups.myspace.com/cerridwenpress.

"You should go talk to him," Becky said, giving me a nudge.
"In front of everyone?" I said. "You've got to be joking." My legs felt like jelly. I gave myself a shake. I was being ridiculous, overreacting. Becky was right. If this was my response to the first good-looking man I saw, I really did need to get out more.
"Please. There's smart, and then there's stupid," Carol said, coming up for air. "You're going to let Roger and a bunch of old gossipy biddies keep you from a man like that?"
Carol was right. It was time I showed a little backbone. "Not when you put it that way," I said. I risked a glance back in his direction. He was watching the band, giving me a good look at his profile. It was gorgeous too.
Too gorgeous, actually. Sanity returned. I turned around more firmly in my chair.
"Go on." Becky gave me another little push.
I didn't budge. "No way," I said. "There's something wrong with him."
"What? What is wrong with him?" Carol demanded.
"He's boring, he's vain, he has six wives in various countries, he lives in a yurt with fifteen Chihuahuas, he sells deodorant for a livingI don't know, but I stand by my theory. No one can be that good-looking and have a personality."
"Oh, for goodness sake!" Carol said. "What a load of crap!"
Becky gave her a stunned look at this unexpected reversal of argument. Carol never backed off something that had been written up in Scientific American.
Carol continued, on a roll now. "Stop inventing reasons to avoid talking to him. If you want to forgo meeting fabulous men to sit here with the likes of us for the rest of your life, be my guest." Her glasses had slid down her nose and she glared over the top of them at me.
"What she said," Becky said. "Though I don't know why you'd even care if he has thirty wives and eats deodorant for a living. You don't need to have him around for scintillating conversationlook at him! He's so hot he doesn't need a personality. What do you want to talk to him for anyway?"
"Gotta love liberated women," I muttered. "Equal opportunity chauvinism."

EXCERPT FROM THE MASTERS: TARAK BY KATE HILL:
![]()
From Changeling Press.
Deva finally arrived at Sunlight of the Soul and went to her room. Her appointment with Tarak began at ten o'clock, and while she could hardly wait to see him, she didn't want to appear too eager.
She took her time preparing. After a long, hot shower, she smoothed scented lotion on her skin. It took a long time to dry her thick, waist-length black hair, but it was one of her best features. Tarak loved her hair, so she left it flowing freely over her shoulders and down her back. She slipped into a gold satin bra, matching panties, and strappy gold high-heeled sandals. She'd painted her toenails and long fingernails burgundy to match the satin robe she slid on and belted at her waist.
Glancing at herself in the mirror, she smiled and drew a deep breath. Now she was ready.
The clock by the bed told her it was five past ten. Perfect.
After dabbing on a bit of perfume, she took the elevator to the third floor. As she'd been instructed, she walked to the room labeled See No Evil. The first chamber of the sexual gantlet.
The faint aroma of rose-scented incense drifted though the crack under the door and she detected the sound of soft flute music.
She cleared her throat and tapped on the door.
Almost immediately it opened and her heart skipped a beat as she faced Tarak. Have mercy, the man still turned her on more than anyone. He was so much taller than her that she had to tilt her head to meet his dark gaze. Lean yet well-muscled, he reminded her of a sleek cat. At the moment he wore only black boots and snug jeans with a sexy tear in the thigh. His broad, dark-skinned chest beckoned her to touch it, but she clenched her hands into fists and forced herself to remain in control.
"You're late," Tarak stated, his deep, husky voice sending a delightful quiver down her spine.
"I wanted to make certain I was presentable."
"You do not keep a Master of Ecstasy waiting," he said curtly.
In spite of her irritation, Deva smiled seductively and took a step closer. "Does that mean you're going to punish me?"
"Be careful, Deva. This is not a game. Once you enter this chamber, you will be under my control and obey my commands. "
"Hmm." She narrowed her eyes, then trailed a fingertip along his taut belly, feeling the muscles ripple beneath her touch. "Sounds like our marriage."
Ignoring her, he continued, "Now is your only chance to leave if you do not intend to conform to the rules." Tarak curled his lip, grasped her hand and removed it from his chest. "I should have known you wouldn't take this seriously."
"All right. I'm sorry." She forced the smile from her face and stood at attention. "I agree to your rules."
He gazed at her for a long moment and her stomach clenched with desire. Tarak's intense dark eyes never failed to seduce her, which was why she'd fled their marriage without talking to him. If she had told him face-to-face that she wanted a separation, he would have given her "the look" and she'd have weakened.
The man had a power over her and by the strong, delicious scent of his arousal and the emotions gleaming in his eyes, she still wielded power over him as well. While she had never doubted their lust -- and love -- for each other, would they be able to come to an agreement and once again live a happy life?
Perhaps she was getting ahead of herself. One step at a time.
He tugged a black silk scarf from the back pocket of his jeans. "This is the Chamber of Darkness. Turn around."
She did as he asked and he fastened the scarf over her eyes, leaving her in darkness. Actually it was better this way. Now she wouldn't have to look at him.
Slowly he unfastened her sash and slid off her robe. His strong, sinewy arms slid around her waist and his chin brushed her shoulder. Damn. This was worse than a look. Her entire body tingled at his touch and her heart beat faster.
"It's strange what six months apart can do, isn't it, Tarak?" she asked softly and placed her hands on his forearms, stroking gently and relishing the feel of his warm flesh. "I feel like we're young again."
"I don't know," he said into her ear, his voice low and husky. "You're much more attractive than the naove young girl from so long ago."
"I think you preferred the young girl. She was easier to control."
Dropping his hold on her, he sighed in exasperation. "Deva, my first command is there will be no arguments in this chamber."
"I wasn't arguing. I was merely stating --"
"Be quiet and come with me." He grasped her arm and guided her inside, closing the door behind them.
He led her across the room until her feet nudged something soft. "There is a large cushion in front of you. Lie on it."
She knelt and slowly stretched out on her back atop the enormous satin pillow. Beneath the blindfold, she closed her eyes, yet in spite of the soothing music and the intimacy of being blindfolded, she felt anything but relaxed. Filled with lust and anticipation, she couldn't stop her heart from racing. Her clit already buzzed just from Tarak's nearness, and her nipples tightened, pressing against the smooth material of her bra.
"Are you excited?" he asked, unfastening her bra and slipping it off. He snapped her wrists into cuffs embedded in the floor and stroked her legs before removing her panties.
"Do you hope I am?" she asked with a smile.

GUEST AUTHOR INTERVIEW: ANN JACOBS
KH: Would you tell us about your latest release and also what you have coming up later this year?
AJ: ROPED, the first of my Heart of the West series, was released last September at Ellora's Cave. HITCHED will be a March 5 release, and LASSOED is scheduled for April 11. After that, I've got several projects in the works, including revising a BDSM contemporary series that will be loosely connected sequels to A MUTUAL FAVOR, a futuristic prequel to GATES OF HELL and a rewrite of my 2000 release from Kensington. I'm hoping to stay healthy this year and make up for all my down time from 2007. That wasn't a good year, for certain.
KH: You write in several different genres. Do you have a favorite?
AJ: Contemporary's my favorite, either with or without BDSM elements. I also enjoy doing historicals and contemporaries with vampires, every now and then.
KH: What is your favorite thing about writing romance novels?
AJ: I think what I like best is getting letters from readers who've read and enjoyed my books enough to let me know.
KH: To you what makes a great romance hero?
AJ: Tall, dark, handsome--and strong enough to protect his lover from threats that put her in danger, either physically or emotionally. I enjoy testing my heroes, making them face and conquer their own demons as well.
KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
AJ: Hard question! I love all my heroes, couldn't write about them if I didn't. I guess I'd have to choose Gray in Bittersweet Homecoming or Jared in ROPED, if I had to make a choice.
KH: Do you have a website, blog, newsletter or email where readers can reach you?
AJ: My website is: annjacobs.net. I have a blog that is clicked to from my website, but it's pretty much inactive at the moment.
My myspace pages are: http://www.myspace.com/authorannjacobs or http://www.myspace.com/annjacobs_hotw or http://www.myspace.com/dargentvampires
The last two are sites for the Heart of the West and the d'Argent Honor series. They have video book trailers readers seem to like.
Readers can email me at ann@annjacobs.net.
KH: Thank you, Ann!

EXCERPT FROM HITCHED BY ANN JACOBS
Coming soon from Ellora's Cave
The temptation was now here, right in front of her, and it was almost as if the storm was conspiring with him, blowing away her choices. Of course every submissive knew how even the illusion of having her choices taken away could ratchet up desire. The battle lost, she lowered her gaze and spoke. "I-I don't mind. Not really. I know you'd never hurt me."
"Hurt you? No, baby, I'll never hurt you, not unless you need a little pain to get off." Brad tilted her head and joined their lips.
He'd never done that before. She'd never allowed it. She must have been crazy all these months, because this simple kiss conveyed more than lust. It spoke of tenderness that touched her deep inside.
He ran his tongue along the seam of her lips, asking entrance. Not demanding it. Keely opened to him, stroked his tongue with hers, felt his warm breath mingle with hers in the dark solitude of his truck's cozy interior. All of a sudden the chill left her bones, replaced by a warm glow that began in her belly and snaked its way through her body. Yeah. She was still afraid of taking their purely sexual relationship to a new level, but not so afraid that she could tell him no. "Please take me home with you," she murmured against his lips when he released her.
"Oh, yeah." He slid over and put the truck in gear then patted the space beside him. "Curl up here and let me keep you warm. But don't think I'm about to forget you need a good old-fashioned spanking for even thinking about taking off by yourself. Look out the window, watch the snow. Feel the wind rattling the windows. And thank God this truck has four-wheel drive and new snow tires, and that it's only a couple of miles to my place."
"Yes, Master." Keely stared out the window, watching the wiper blades send melted snow flying as they made their way out of the parking lot and onto the highway. Brad drove the big, new pickup truck like a prothe way he drove her to mindless climaxes in every encounter they'd shared at the dungeon. "Your transportation's a far cry from mine."
He turned into a winding country road that led up a steep rise. Though she braced herself for feeling the truck slipping and sliding, instead she listened to the motor's growl become fiercer. The oversize tires dug in, crunching through the newly fallen snow to get to the frozen ground below. Soon Brad drew to a stop inside the garage of a breathtakingly beautiful contemporary house, all angles and expanses of sparkling glass and rough-hewn cedar.
After turning off the motor, Brad came around and opened her door. "I need something rugged and reliable to get myself home on nights like these. You do too," he added, his smile morphing into a scowl. "Come on, let's go inside and get warm."

EXCERPT FROM THE MASTERS: SAMSON BY KATE HILL:
![]()
Available as an ebook from Changeling Press.
"A good way to learn about a partner is through touch," Samson stated. "And one of the best ways to relax is to experience a strong orgasm."
"I'm for that." Cortez chuckled.
"Silence," Samson ordered in a commanding voice. "Or I will gag you, Cortez. As I was saying, let's take care of getting to know each other and relaxing at the same time. Jendaya, Cortez is standing about five paces in front of you. I want you to walk toward him and place your hands on his shoulders. Cortez, you will not move until you're told, is that understood?"
"Yeah."
"You will call me Sir or Master."
"Yes, Sir," Cortez said with a hint of annoyance.
"Jendaya, you may approach him," Samson stated coolly, as if Cortez's attitude wasn't worth dealing with yet.
She did as he instructed, her hands reaching for Cortez. They touched his solid chest and she slid her hands up it until they finally rested on his broad, rock-hard shoulders. This man, with his tight, well-muscled body was a pleasure to touch.
Samson continued instructing her, his voice deep yet soft and erotically commanding. "Slide your hands up to his neck and lightly wrap your hands around it."
With her hands resting around Cortez's strong neck, she stood, waiting. She felt his pulse beating through his warm flesh. Soon her heartbeat seemed to match the rhythmic throbbing of the sides of his neck against her hands. Absently, she began using her thumbs to gently stroke his neck. The flesh was smooth in places and lightly dusted with stubble in others. Ever so lightly she rested her thumb in the hollow of his throat. There was something powerful yet vulnerable in a man's neck. These innocent caresses were strangely inmate and erotic. Cortez must have thought so as well because his scent grew stronger and she felt his heart beating a little faster, as was hers.
"We've only just begun, but you're already learning about each other," Samson said, his voice closer to her now. She almost jumped. Usually her senses were keen, but she hadn't heard him move. Maybe because she was so focused on Cortez. Samson's hands rested on her shoulders, their warmth spreading through her. She wore a sleeveless dress, so his skin rested directly on hers and it felt wonderful. Leaning even nearer, he spoke in her ear, his voice husky, "No two hearts beat alike, and no two people feel the same. This is Cortez you're feeling, Jendaya. Cortez alone. Take his face in your hands and kiss him."
Her heartbeat quickening even more, she moistened her lips with the tip of her tongue, cupped Cortez's smooth cheeks and rough, warm jaw. She brushed her thumb over his lips, feeling where they were since she couldn't see through the blindfold. Tilting her face up, she leaned closer and kissed him. His lips were firm, warm and pleasantly moist. Beneath the blindfold, her eyes closed and she kissed him again. This time he responded, his lips moving sensually against hers. The tips of their tongues met, tentatively at first, then with greater enthusiasm. He tasted deliciouswarm, wet and a bit minty.

GUEST AUTHOR INTERVIEW: S. A. MARTIN
KH: What are your favorite genres to read and write?
SAM: Kate, thanks so much for having me as a guest. I started writing historicals, but now I especially enjoy writing paranormal and fantasy romances. I read a lot of fantasy novels, not necessarily by romance writers.
KH: Would you tell us about your latest and upcoming releases?
SAM: Kate, my last release was THE PRINCESS AND THE CURSE. It's available at http://www.newconceptspublishing.com/theprincessandthecurse.htm You can download it for $3.50. It's had some good reviews.
KH: What is your favorite thing about writing romance?
SAM: Romances always have a happy ending. Nothing is more disappointing than to read a novel where you think there will be a happy ending, and it doesn't materialize, or else it leaves you up in the air.
KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?
SAM: A strong hero who is still vulnerable. He'll do anything to protect the heroine, but he wants and needs her love, too. Speaking of love, I fall in love with all of my heroes, the kind of man I like.
KH: How about a great romance heroine?
SAM: Funny thing, she should have some of the very traits that make the hero a good hero. She must be strong, capable of standing on her own two feet, but needing the hero's love and support. She should be feminine and ladylike. I don't like heroines who swear or act like a man.
KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
SAM: Difficult question! I love all of my heroes. It's a tossup between Galan, the vampire hero of ONE MORE TOMORROW, and Christian, the hero of the time travel romance, DREAM WEAVER. But I also like Owen, the steelworker hero of my historical romance, FORBIDDEN LOVE, who falls in love with a wealthy society woman--caught in an unhappy marriage.
KH: Do you have a website, blog, newsletter or email where readers can reach you?
SAM: My email address is Mshirley1496@aol.com I have a newsletter group anyone can subscribe to by going to paranormalpotpourri-subscribe@yahoogroups. And I'd love to have readers visit my website, where they can read chapters from my romances and read a little about me. http://www.shirleymartin.net

EXCERPT FROM NIGHT SHADOWS BY S.A. MARTIN
Love and desire swept over her, a firestorm of need deep within, a desperate craving that only he could satisfy. Gaderian gathered her into his embrace, her breasts crushed against his chest, his full member pressed to her belly. Wrapped in each other's arms, they kissed again and again, as if for the first time. Gaderian drew her to the bed with him, where they kissed and caressed with a frenzied hunger. He touched her in every sensitive spot, those secret places he'd learned by heart. Caressing her breast, he licked her nipple, sucking gently on the pebbly mound. Pleasure sparked through her, a fiery heat, a need too great to be denied. Her fingers tangled in his dark locks, then trailed down to his neck and shoulders, drawing him closer, closer to her. His lips traced a path from her breast to her belly, kissing, licking her skin as his finger moved over the hardened nub between her legs. His head followed the same path, gently kissing the core of her sex, his tongue licking, probing, darting over her until she all but screamed with joy. She was climbing, climbing, climbing to a pinnacle of rapture, aching with the pleasure-pain of wanting him. And dear Goddess, if she had to wait another second, she didn't think she could bear it.
"Please," she whimpered. "Please take me now."
He lifted his head and smiled lightly, teasingly. "Ah, you want me inside you?"
"You know I do." Her body throbbed for him, a need so great she thought she'd burst. Ah, please don't make me wait any longer.
He raised himself up and across her, then pressed inside her slowly, taunting Fianna to madness. He whispered in her ear, "Is this what you wanted?"
"Yes, yes!"
"You like to have me inside you, don't you?" He nuzzled her neck.
"Yes!" She could barely speak and had to bite her lip to keep from reaching a climax too soon. This beautiful feeling was building within her, a liquid fire creeping over her, an overwhelming need for fulfillment.
"Am I big enough for you?"
"Ah, yes!"
He eased back and forth inside her. "And you like this, don't you?"
"Please!" She was going out of her mind from wanting him.
Another thrust. "Does this feel good?"
"Please, love, don't do this to me."
He stopped, giving her a long, lazy look. "You don't want me making love to you?"
"You know I do." She couldn't hold back much longer.
He moved inside her with deliberate slowness, as if to torment her. She moved against him, faster, faster, unable to wait any longer. He matched her movements, his breathing heavy as they both reached a crest of pleasure. Climbing higher, higher, reaching the top, she gasped and moaned as pure rapture erupted inside her, Gaderian's and hers, together. Countless moments later, she sighed with an ecstasy she never wanted to end.

EXCERPT FROM VICTORY STALLION BY KATE HILL:
Upcoming as an ebook from Ellora's Cave.
Janelle stood, looking at her bloodstained hands. Sighing, she made her way through the crowded longhouse to find some water to wash her hands before moving on to her next task. She'd arrived early that morning with a group of Horsemen and Gatherers from the village she'd been stationed at several miles east of here. As soon as she heard about the evacuation, she'd set off to help, knowing how much damage tropical storms caused.
Already Larkville was overcrowded and Horsemen were still flying back and forth with evacuees. She knew many of the Fighting Carriers who had come to assist, as she'd ridden them at various times. Unlike most Gatherers, she had decided not to settle in one village, therefore being permanently assigned to a Fighting Carrier. She liked moving from place to place, riding different Horsemen and meeting people from a variety of villages. At times, the constant travel got tiring, but when always moving and changing Carriers, she could avoid becoming too attached. Maybe one day she would settle down, but she simply wasn't ready yet.
Heading toward the back door of the longhouse, she was jolted from her thoughts by the sight of a striking Horseman with thick black hair, most of which had escaped the leather strip binding it at his nape. His broad-shouldered man-torso with its sleekly-muscled arms and lean waist flowed into a tall, powerful beast-half covered in a blood bay coat. His glossy black wings were folded against his sides and his tail swished over his flanks. Janelle had seen many beautiful Horsemen in her lifetime, but none that made her react like this. Her heartbeat quickened and mouth went dry just from looking at him. His appearance screamed Fighting Carrier and the style of his saddle confirmed it.
She heard him curse softly and noticed he was soaking his hand in a basin of water. Stepping closer, she saw his arm was bloody from the elbow down.
"Do you need help?" she asked, approaching and washing her hands in another basin while glancing at his injury. She noted his man-torso and beast-half were damp with rain and sweat. Most likely he'd been flying evacuees to safety.
"It looks worse than it is," he said, his brow furrowed as he examined the jagged cut on his forearm.
Janelle raised her eyes to the heavens and reached for a cloth that she dipped in the water and used to clean his injury. "Why do men always think they must say that? Do you think it makes you sound tough or something?"
"I am tough."
She glanced up at him, about to retort, but noticed his grin and a teasing gleam in the bluest eyes she'd ever seen. He had a ruggedly attractive face with a long, well-shaped nose and square jaw accented by a trimmed black goatee. The fine lines about his eyes told her he was probably in his mid-thirties. Janelle didn't mind. In truth, she found older men much more attractive than young ones. Those eyes of his were irresistible. Forcing herself to look away from them, she focused on his arm.
"I think you'll need a few stitches," she said. "I'm not a healer, but I've been taught how to do it, if you trust me."
He glanced around. "As busy as we are, I don't think I have much choice."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Janelle said, reaching into the supply pack fastened around her waist. A moment later, she was busy sewing his arm, her brow furrowed in concentration. "How did this happen?"
"On one of the islands, a wagon was overturned by the storm. A couple of people were trapped and I got cut pulling them out."
"Did they make it?"
"Yes. They're fine. Lucky, though." He grunted in discomfort. "Lady, you're killing me."
"I thought you were tough?" Janelle said, but tried to be as gentle as possible. The cut was rather long and she knew how much stitches hurt. In an attempt to keep his mind off his troubles, she asked, "Obviously you're a Fighting Carrier, but I've never seen you around the tropics. Are you usually stationed in the North?"
"Yes. I'm an instructor at the Hall of Fighting Carriers. And do you know all the Fighting Carriers in the South?"
"Are you being sarcastic?"
"No."
Seeing genuine curiosity in his expression, she replied, "I'm a Gatherer and I've worked in most villages in the tropics. And I'm approved by the Fighting Carriers, so I've ridden many of you."
"If I thought I could get a rider like you, I might ask for a transfer," he said, another grin curving his sensual mouth. This time she saw a hint of lust in his eyes and her belly tightened.
"In your dreams," she retorted, hiding her desire with disgust. "Hold your arm still."
She finished stitching and applied salve, then reached for a roll of bandages and began wrapping his arm and hand. While his palm was scraped raw, it didn't require stitches. Winding the bandage around his sinewy forearm, lightly dusted with dark hair, she noticed the hint of gold in his pale skin.
"What's your name?" he asked, his voice a bit lower and rougher than before. She liked the sound of it, deep enough to arouse her, but not too deep. The perfect pitch for a man.
"Janelle," she said.
"Pretty."
Again she looked up and met his gaze, flattered, yet defiant. The last thing she wanted was to be seduced by a Horseman like this. Incredibly virile and very good-looking, he was bound to be an arrogant ass. "And you are?"
"Wilder," he stated.
Janelle nodded, unable to keep the slightest smile from her lips. "It suits you."
Their gazes locked for several heartbeats and Janelle felt as if she couldn't look away from his gorgeous blue eyes even if she wanted to.
