GUEST AUTHOR INTERVIEW: SHAYLA KERSTEN

KH: What is your favorite romance subgenre to read?

SK: I really don't have a favorite. I have a very diverse collection of books, both romance and general fiction. I love a good suspense novel and if there's a great romantic storyline in it, even better! I do love gay romances. . .but then I'd guess I'd have to since I write it!

KH: Would you tell us about your book Thirty Days?

SK: Gladly! THIRTY DAYS is the story of Biton and Cavan. Biton is still mourning the death of his lover and slave. Cavan is a lost soul who never made the decision to be a submissive. Forced into slavery at an early age, serving a cruel master is the only life Cavan's ever known. Biton is different and Cavan isn't sure how to handle his new master's kindness. All he knows is he has someone new to serve for as long as the temporary contract lasts. For thirty days. . .

I've been getting some really great responses to this book. Romance Junkies gave THIRTY DAYS 4.5 Blue Ribbons.

KH: Would you tell us about some of your upcoming releases?

SK: My next release is with Ellora's Cave. THE COST OF ETERNITY is another homoerotic romance. It's the story of Lorcan MacKenna, a two hundred year old vampire, who stumbles on a down and out actor. Kevin is trying to make it in the Big Apple but not succeeding very well. Rescued by Lorcan from certain injury, he lets Lorcan lead him into pleasures he didn't realize he craved. But can he handle Lorcan's secret? And can Lorcan handle his?

My other sale in 2006 was to Kensington Aphrodisia. My story, KEKET'S CURSE, will be in volume two of the Damned, Dangerous & Delicious anthology with Myla Jackson and Layla Chase. KEKET'S CURSE is about Jamila Aten. Cursed by the High Priestess Keket 3000 years ago, Jamila lives with an insatiable lust. With looks Cleopatra would kill for, she doesn't have a problem attracting men. Unfortunately, her kiss kills. The release date is still to be determined but will probably be in 2008.

I'm working on the sequel to THE COST OF ETERNITY right now but it's a very raw draft. I also have ideas for another story for Ellora's Cave as well as a sequel to the Liquid Silver release, THIRTY DAYS.

KH: To you what makes a great romance hero?

SK: We all love the strong hunky Alpha hero but I like my Alphas to have a little tender side. He has to have heart beneath those lovely muscles. Intelligence and humor are a must. I don't want him so overprotective that his lover is overshadowed by his abilities.

KH: What is your writing schedule like?

SK: Weekends are for writing! I need that on a t-shirt. My dratted day job is intense and I have a long commute. Weekdays are pretty much shot by the time I get home. I use a voice recorder on the drive to and from work for ideas and plot brainstorming. If I get anything done during the week, it's usually editing what I wrote over the weekend. I belong to a writer's resource group called Rose's Colored Glasses (www.rosescoloredglasses.com). We do timed writing a lot. You meet with friends in chat, set a timer for 45 minutes and write as fast as you can. Then we meet for 15 minutes to compare word count, brainstorm and then we're off again. It's a great way to make a deadline and wonderful for getting your muse in gear.

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

SK: Only one? Hard question! I'd love to meet Cavan, from THIRTY DAYS. He's such a lost soul I just want to hug him!

KH: Do you have a website, blog, newsletter or email where readers can reach you?

SK: My website is www.shaylakersten.com. My blog is linked at my website, www.shaylakersten.com/blog but I'm terrible about keeping it up! I have a Yahoo group for updates on new books and work in progress. You can subscribe by emailing shaylakersten-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

KH: Thank you, Shayla!

EXCERPT FROM THIRTY DAYS BY SHAYLA KERSTEN:

Available from Liquid Silver Books

Biton turned his gaze back to Antonio. "This was a set up, wasn't it?" He let his smile soften the accusation.

Antonio shrugged. "Caught." He reached out his hand and rested it on Biton's shoulder. "Since you were at the club then I knew you were beginning to look again. I just wanted to make it easier."

"So was that's my selection?"

Antonio laughed, his hand squeezing Biton's shoulder before he released it. "No, there's one more. Couldn't offer you a blond and a brunette without throwing in a redhead! Cavan's a little shy though."

Biton turned to follow his friend's line of sight. A rather forlorn looking redhead sat with his legs curled up under him in a corner of the room.

As he walked toward the young man, Biton could see the muscle tone through the open shirt. His eyes down, Cavan obviously didn't notice Biton's approach until he was looming over him.

"I'm sorry, Ma--," the young man's voice cut of sharply as he rose from the small sofa. "May I serve you?" He was taller than he appeared while seated. Maybe it was the way he made himself smaller, curled in a tight ball.

"Relax, Cavan. I just want to talk." Biton sat down and motioned Cavan to do the same.

The young man complied but Biton could see the reluctance in his bearing. Tense and uncomfortable, Cavan sat on the edge of the sofa, his posture stiff. His knuckles were white as he held onto the leather collar.

"Is that your collar?"

"Yes, M..."

Once again, Cavan bit back the word. It wasn't proper to call someone Master without permission. Usually the privilege wasn't granted until an understanding was reached. But maybe he would relax a little...

"If it makes you comfortable, Cavan, you may call me Master or Sir but it is not a contract."

"Thank you, Master." Pale green eyes darted up and the tension hardened muscles in his back softened a little. "Contract, Master?"

"A contract... Between a Master and a slave. Didn't your old Master have a contract with you?"

"No, Sir."

"An agreement, then. One about your responsibilities and his."

"My responsibility was to obey my Master in all things."

The words sounded rote.

"What about his responsibility to care for you, see to your needs?"

"My only need was to serve my Master."

"Do you have a job?"

Cavan's eyes flicked between Biton and the wide leather collar, still held in a white knuckled grip. "I do now. I serve--I work in M--Mr. Casala's house. I'm a house servant."

Biton heard the difficulty Cavan had saying Antonio's name without adding the title of Master. "But you didn't before? With your old Master?"

"No, Sir. My job was to serve him." A shudder swept down his back.

Biton glanced up to see Antonio edging closer to where he and Cavan were seated. Some questions needing asking but getting answers out of Cavan was like pulling teeth.

"Cavan, I need another drink. Scotch, straight up."

The young man sprang like a tightly wound coil released. "Yes, Master." Relief flooded the two words as if he were desperate to serve in any capacity.

As the young man fled on his errand, Biton crooked a finger at the hovering Antonio.

"What's his story?" Biton asked as Antonio took Cavan's seat.

"His last, and only, Master was Maxwell Wainwright."

"Wainwright... the name's familiar."

"You probably got the emails about the incident from the Society but it was only a week or so after Erik's death. I'm sure you weren't paying attention. Cavan showed up at the emergency room badly beaten. His back was a bloody mess, broken arm, two fractured ribs and rectal lacerations from some kind of foreign object. He refused to press charges against his attacker. Lia called me because she recognized the name of the man paying the bills."

He nodded as he remembered Lia was an emergency room nurse.

"Well, the Society warned Wainwright, threatened to exclude him and issue warnings to potential subs. A week later, right after he was released from the hospital, Cavan returned to the emergency room with a broken jaw and bloody nose. Wainwright had tossed him in the street with nothing but a pair of jeans, his collar and his new injuries. Lia stepped in and asked permission to bring him home."

Biton's teeth clenched in anger. No one had the right to abuse a slave. The scene was not about pain for pain's sake. The redhead couldn't have been more than twenty-five or twenty-six. "How long was he with Wainwright?"

"Since he was eighteen, nine years."

So he was twenty-seven. "Was it all like that? The abuse?" Biton watched as the young man hurried toward them, drink in hand.

"I think so. Getting him to talk is difficult. I would guess Wainwright threatened him. And he's so well trained I doubt he'd ever break his confidence." Antonio rose as Cavan drew near. "I'll talk to you later." Antonio nodded to Cavan as he walked past to mingle with his other guests.

Cavan knelt to present the drink to Biton as if he were carrying something precious and rare.

Biton took the drink with one hand and patted the cushion beside him with the other. "Thank you. Sit here. You don't have to kneel."

"Yes, Master." The young man moved with grace to comply but his fingers once again clutched his collar.

Biton sipped his drink silently. Cavan interested him but he was so wounded, so lost. On the other hand, maybe that's why the young man caught his interest. Biton felt the same way without Erik.

EXCERPT FROM CARNAL OBEDIENCE BY KATE HILL:

Coming soon from Changeling Press.

As she thought, Jolie removed her belt and flipped it over to where several small tools were sewn into the leather. They were old-fashioned metal tools that she'd carried since her pirating days, but they were good enough to pick a lock. Her mind churning with possibilities about Ransom, Temple and their band of renegades, she worked the lock on the heavy iron door.

It didn't take her very long to free herself. The corridor was dark and empty. Sniffing the air, she only caught Ransom's faded scent from hours ago. Shifting to her wolf form, she walked soundlessly down the corridor. Her pulse quickened as she neared the chamber where she'd spoken to Temple. His scent and that of Ransom was very strong, almost sexual in its intensity. A low groan sounded from behind the door and she paused. Her keen vision detected a hole in the rustic wooden door. Common sense told her to go on her way while she still could, but another groan and a lustful growl dragged her back to the door where she crouched and glanced in the hole.

Her breath caught in her throat. Inside Temple stood, his sleekly muscled body naked. Ransom, wearing jeans that hugged every lean, rock-hard curve of his legs, knelt in front of him, Temple's cock clasped in his hands while he lapped and sucked its thick, ruby head.

She knew Ransom had strong feelings for Temple, but she never imagined they were lovers. Compelled she continued staring, her nipples tight and clit aching as Ransom sucked deeper, harder. One of his large, long-fingered hands slid around to stroke and knead Temple's gorgeous backside.

Temple's eyes were closed, his thick lashes casting shadows on his tanned cheeks. His broad chest expanded with each ragged breath and he growled incessantly, a wild, sexy sound that made Jolie's clit throb. Temple buried his hands in Ransom's thick black hair while the other wolf began sucking with a vengeance.

Temples' ragged breathing became hard panting. His steely pecs twitched in spasms of pleasure. Muscles tightened in his gorgeous thighs and his big, taut buttocks clenched as he thrust his hips in time with Ransom's sucking.

Her heart slamming in her chest and clit aching with need, Jolie stared. She moistened lips that had gone dry. One of her secret passions had always been watching two men together. To her nothing was sexier.

Just when she was certain Temple was going to come, he grasped Ransom roughly by the shoulders and shoved him away. Ransom tumbled backward. Muscles bulged in his long, sleek arms as he braced his hands against the floor to keep from slamming onto his back. From that position, the bulge in the front of his jeans was obvious.

Damn these wolves had the most fucking gorgeous bodies she'd ever seen. Unable to resist, she dipped her hand between her legs, cupped her sex and rubbed slowly.

Ransom rose swiftly to his feet, his motions graceful yet strong. The differences between him and Temple seemed even more pronounced at the moment—one emanating subtle power and the other radiating primitive strength. Jolie wondered what it would be like to be in the room with them at this moment, snug between two magnificent wolves. She'd been a free spirit all her life. Though she had more than her share of proposals, she had no desire to ally herself to one man. Now a shocking realization struck her. Maybe, like her foster father, one partner wouldn't be enough for her. She imagined herself trapped between Ransom and Temple. Stroked and caressed by one. Vigorously claimed by the other.

Once again her thoughts were broken as Ransom kicked off his boots and removed his socks and jeans. While he undressed, Temple removed a container of lube from the trunk across the room. As soon as Ransom stood, naked, Temple grasped him roughly by the waist, turned him toward the bed of blankets and pillows on the floor and shoved him hard. Ransom flashed him a look, part angry but mostly aroused, and dropped to his hands and knees on the bed. Still growling deep in his throat, Temple knelt behind Ransom, lubed first his cock then Ransom's tightly-muscled bottom.

An almost wicked grin on his lips, Temple worked first one finger, then two fingers then three inside Ransom. The black-haired wolf's face was in perfect view of Jolie. His half-open eyes gleamed with lust and his lips were parted as he drew short, fast sips of air. The muscles in his chest, shoulders and arms strained as pleasure grew. Temple reached around with his free hand and began stroking Ransom's cock while he continued toying with his ass.

"Will you fuck me already?" Ransom grunted, his fingers tight on the blankets.

Temple chuckled, leaned forward and licked up the length of Ransom's spine. Then he withdrew his fingers from his ass, replacing them with the tip of his cock. Ransom growled, his eyes tightly closed as Temple grasped him by the hips and eased his way in. Temple began thrusting in a steady rhythm. Jolie realized the hand between her legs was stroking in time with Temple's thrusting.

Almost abruptly, Temple's pace quickened. He pounded fast and hard, making Ransom groan and growl. Temple grasped Ransom's cock, squeezing and stroking as he thrust until with a savage cry, Ransom climaxed, his come shooting across the makeshift bed.

His head thrown back, the tendons in his neck standing out and his chest flushed and heaving, Temple rammed into him with a few more fast thrusts then erupted, his hips grinding into Ransom's pulsing ass.

Temple pulled out and Ransom collapsed onto his side, a contented smile on his lips. Temple rinsed his hands in a nearby bowl of water, picked up a towel and dried them off, walking across the room.

Jolie was so turned on by what she'd just seen that she was on the verge of orgasm, her hand still kneading between her legs. She didn't notice until too late that Temple had neared the door.

He flung it open and she gasped in surprise, falling onto her butt.

A knowing grin on his lips, Temple said, "We have a little visitor, partner."

"I know," Ransom replied from where he was sprawled on his back, his eyes half closed. "I smelled her, too."

"Yes. The scent of unfulfilled passion." Temple reached down, grasped Jolie's arm and dragged her to her feet. His fierce blue gaze fixed on her and she was lost. Gods his eyes were beautiful. "Frustration. Isn't that right, Jolie?"

Glaring at him, she tried to push him away, but his grip was solid.

"What's it going to be now, Temple? You going to do me up the ass next like your boyfriend here?"

"You speak with contempt but your scent tells another story," Temple said.

"Maybe she only enjoys watching," Ransom suggested, raising himself onto his elbows.

"Very possible." Temple shoved her inside and closed the door. He circled her, his arms at his sides though she knew he was anything but relaxed. His gaze, his walk, even his scent revealed the sharpness of his senses. "She's been around Vampires for so long that she's probably forgotten how to mate like a wolf."

GUEST AUTHOR INTERVIEW: LA DAY KH: Will you tell us about your book Feral Domination?

LAD: Feral Domination is a shapeshifter story. Gionne is the alpha male of the lupine pack, while Jenna is a feline shifter. Not everyone wants to see the breeds mix. In fact, someone is willing to kill to stop it. However, Gionne will do whatever it takes to have Jenna and keep her safe. Even if it means he must share her with another male. This story has light bondage and a menage.

KH: What are some of your upcoming projects?

LAD: My current releases scheduled from Ellora's Cave are: The Last Warrior, releases March 16, 2007, Barbarian, releases May 2, 2007 & Double Penetration releases June 15, 2007. Currently, I am working on an erotic SciFi novel.

KH: What is your favorite thing about writing romance novels?

LAD: The freedom to let your imagination run wild. KH: To you what makes a great romance hero?

LAD: Umm, I love an alpha male. He can have a dark side, a misunderstood side, definitely a dominant side but underneath is a heart of gold.

KH: How about a great romance heroine?

LAD: I prefer a strong capable female. She doesn't have to have a man in her life but she wants one. When she finds her mate, she goes after him. Whether he's a barbarian or a vampire she shows no fear. Although, she might make him work to tame her, eventually she'll submit to her alpha male.

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be? LAD: Lone Wolf from The Last Warrior. He is a Native American warrior transported through time to 2007. He's your typical alpha male...yummy!

KH: Do you have a website, blog, newsletter or email where readers can reach you?

LAD: My website: http://www.la-day.com
My blog: http://www.la-day.blogspot.com/
My Space: www.myspace.com/ladaywrites

KH: Thank you, LA!

Finally, she was within his grasp. There would be no escape for her this time. Noon tomorrow. The words rang in his ears. Emil had just confirmed the time of their meeting. He had anticipated this day for two years. Yesterday he received the message from the Carbonesse requesting a meeting. Part of his duties as alpha was to monitor the other shape shifting races and it gave him an opportunity to keep track of Jenna. In recent months, he had witnessed the struggles of the Carbonesse. Several years of droughts had led to the inevitable forest fires. The Valde had been lucky in escaping any severe damage to their lands. The felines had not fared as well. Now they sought assistance, he might be willing to help for a price.

The night was quiet, almost as if all the creatures held their breath in anticipation. Wandering into his moonlit, private garden, he followed a winding cobblestone path lined with lupine statues to a hidden frost brushed bench. With a sigh, he collapsed upon it. Overhead, the brightness of the wolf’s moon drew his feral gaze. His mind was troubled. The future of his people perched squarely on his shoulders and sometimes the burden was heavy. Valde and Carbonesse. Lupine and Feline. They had shared this mountain for centuries. Coexistence required wary acceptance of one another’s ways and respect for the others territory. Ultimately, their goals were the same, to live in peace and to keep the outsiders, the humans at bay. They needed each other to survive.

He needed Jenna to live, the past couple of years he had only existed.

Doubts plagued him, his father’s death was a heavy burden to carry but he had to believe that his relationship with Jenna was not the cause of it. His sister, Riza made him believe it. How could his father have resented his relationship with a feline when he had loved a feline as well?

Tomorrow he would look into his counterpart’s eyes and judge his intent before reaching a final decision, even though he feared in his heart that his decision had been made long ago.

He had known Jenna’s brother, Leon Muldrew as a young male, rash, careless, always out for an adventure. The last couple of years they had met on rare occasion. They had both changed under the weight of leadership. No longer were they the best of friends, but he owed the Carbonesse ruler a personal debt. He would settle the debt tomorrow.

Ominously, a ring encircled the moon. Was it a warning or a sign? He judged he had about a sixteen-hour wait until the fruition of his dreams. It would be a long night.

Lunging to his feet, he paced inside the walled enclosure in an attempt to work off some excess energy. Suddenly, the walls seemed to close in upon him. The beast within him raged as he felt the need to change and let his baser side free.

His clothes now a nuisance, he ripped them off. A single beam of moonlight revealed a face stark with need. Slowly raising one hand, he trailed the tips of his fingers along the ridge on the underside of his erection. A grimace of pain and pleasure contorted his face. Tomorrow the ache that had gnawed at him for so long would end. He could still remember the taste of her sweet cream on his tongue. In his mind, he imagined Jenna’s delicate fingers tracing the veins of his cock, her lips parting as he thrust between their lush fullness.

“Tomorrow.” He gasped with a tortured breath ripping his hand away. The familiar tingle of transformation glided up his spine as he threw back his head and howled.

*****

Restlessness plagued Jenna as she tossed in her bed. The thought of seeing Gionne tomorrow intensified the hollow ache within her womb.

Bolting upright, she flung perspiration dampened covers from her nude body and ran to her window to perch on the window seat. She threw open the shutters, the view that greeted her was breathtaking, the dense pine-covered mountainside sprinkled with snow, but that was not what drew her from her bed.

The restless sounds of the night greeted her. There it was again. She knew his call. He was out there somewhere. It reverberated through her soul, the tiny hairs at her neckline stood up. She felt the familiar tingling along her spine, her body’s want of the change. When she was young, she had answered his call many times. However, she was not that young girl anymore. The full moon beckoned and she yearned to trot across the mountainside with the crunch of ice and snow beneath her paws. It was out of the question though, at least for tonight. It would be far too dangerous in her current condition. Instead, she curled her frame upon the window seat staring aimlessly out into the night. Dropping her hand between her thighs her fingers tried in vain, to provide relief to the raging heat within.

EXCERPT FROM BLAZE BY KATE HILL:

Coming soon from Ellora's Cave.

In a fluid motion, he swept her into his arms and covered her mouth with his. She giggled and clung to his neck while he waded deeper into the water. It felt so strange to freely bed a man when all her life she'd upheld her vows. Most Knights and Dames ignored the chastity vow, but Melody had always held it sacred. Probably because she'd truly wanted to wait for the man she knew was right for her. Since meeting Blaze, there had been no question in her mind he was the one.

Blaze retrieved the soap and grasped her arm, tugging her closer for the promised washing.

Sighing with delight, Melody closed her eyes. While he washed, he kissed her neck and nibbled her earlobe.

"That tickles." She laughed when he ran his tongue along the curve of her ear. His beard scratched her neck in the most arousing manner.

Taking the soap from his hand, she turned then rubbed it over his chest. She caressed the sudsy hair, loving the sensation of it against her palm.

"You have such a gorgeous chest," she murmured.

"So do you."

Her gaze flew to his and a blush rose in her face. Glancing down at her breasts that were almost completely exposed beneath the thin, clinging fabric, she smiled. "You think so?"

"I know so." His graceful fingers traced the sides of her breasts with feathery touches.

Melody wanted more. Much more. Placing her hands over his, she guided them nearer her front until his palms covered both breasts. He rolled them tenderly and ran his thumbs over the taut nipples. Engulfed by desire, Melody drew a sharp breath. Her clit ached almost as much as her nipples.

He guided her to a rock by the edge of the pool, grasped her beneath the arms and lifted her onto it. Then he stepped between her legs. From this position his face was level with her breasts. Melody quivered at the thought of what would come next. Blaze kissed one of her breasts through the fabric, pressing his lips over the fleshy mound, carefully avoiding her nipple and areola. This denial of her breast's most sensitive area had Melody tingling with anticipation. When he finished with that breast, he did the same to her other. She threaded her fingers through his hair and closed her eyes, loving each and every magnificent sensation evoked by his kisses.

He covered one of her nipples with his lips and sucked it through the vest's thin fabric. The tip of his tongue gently caressed the nipple and Melody gasped and moaned.

While he nibbled and sucked the taut bud, Blaze untied the front of her vest. He lifted his head only for a moment to slip off her vest and toss it behind her.

"Oh, Blaze," she murmured, trembling with passion. Any second his mouth would be on her bare breast. How could she stand it? The feeling was going to be too wonderful to endure.

Again those tender kisses covered the fleshy part of one breast. They were more than just ordinary kisses, but a lush pressing of his lips against her skin. His soft, moist lips covered her nipple.

Melody gasped, clinging to his head as his tongue lashed the hard bud.

"Oh by the Spirit." She gasped, her legs locking around him and dragging him closer. "Blaze, oh. Blaze."

After giving the nipple one last tug, he licked across her breasts to the other stiff nub. He lapped it with the flat of his tongue then used the tip to circle it. To Melody the world had become a dark haze of passion. Her belly clenched and her legs trembled. Heat and sensation filled her pussy. He sucked harder on her nipple and a thrill rushed through her. Gasping with pleasure, she rubbed her stiff, aching clit against his groin.

Another second of attention on her nipple and she was going to explode.

"Blaze, I-- Oh," she cried, clinging to him hard. Waves of climax broke over her, making her pulse race and hurling her into a realm where only rapture existed.

His arms tight around her and his pelvis pressed to her clit, he continued licking and sucking her nipple until she relaxed against him. Melody smiled, her head resting against his shoulder and her arms and legs draped loosely around him.

Finally she giggled.

"What?"

She lifted her head and met his gaze. "This was certainly worth the wait. It was so fantastic I wonder if I'll be able to survive actual lovemaking with you."

Leaning closer, he kissed her throat. "This is lovemaking."

"You know what I mean."

"I know." He grasped her arms and kissed the tip of her nose. "That is something I can scarcely wait for."

"Then I suggest we return to my room. As beautiful as it is here, this rock is not very comfortable."

GUEST AUTHOR INTERVIEW: NIA FOXX

KH: What are your favorite genres to read and write?

NF: My favorite reading genres are paranormals and sci-fi because you never know what will happen. In terms of writing I'm have to say that I definitely lean more towards paras and sci-fi as well, but I do like contemporary stories that allow me to touch on some present day issues. I'm snickering as I answer this because I haven't really offered any of the latter yet.

KH: What is your favorite thing about writing erotic romance?

NF: The freedom, I hate sugar coating things, besides I doubt many people hold back in the heat of the moment. At least I hope they don't. I think erotic romance is a more true form of what goes on behind closed doors.

KH: Do you find it easier to write your heroes or your heroines?

NF: Hmm, I think I'm more in tune with my heroines. I guess it's just easier for me to draw on a woman's perspective.

KH: To you what makes a great romance hero?

KH: Would you tell us about your latest release Men of the Void: Birthday Surprise?

NF: Certainly. The Void is place where people are sentenced, if you will, to atone for various extreme indiscretions. It's neither heaven or hell but a place for reflection. There are two ways out, a person can complete their reflection time and be sent back to their era in history or they can be called out by someone in need, their consort. Birthday Surprise pairs up two unlikely individuals a repressed modern day librarian and a 13th century Highlander (who spent most of his time in the Void atoning for womanizing, among other things).

KH: What are some of your upcoming projects?

NF:My next story, Any Witch Way, is slated to come out in March through Changeling. I'm currently completing the 4th installment to my Gargoyle's Series and working on a ton of other writing projects in addition to launching my own digital press called Come Hither Press.

KH: If you could meet one of your characters which one would it be?

NF: Hmm, tough... I'd have to say Xian, a Were from an upcoming story called Alice in Wolfland.

KH: Do you have a website, blog, newsletter or email where readers can reach you?

NF: oh sure, my author site is www.niafoxx.com, my digital pub site is www.comehiterpress.com, or people can email me at nia@niafoxx.com.

KH: Thank you, Nia!

EXCERPT FROM PYTHON PLACE 3: ROSE AND THORN BY KATE HILL:

Coming soon from Changeling Press.

"So now you know," Tyrus said and Hailey gasped in surprise, turning to him as he approached, his bare feet silent on the grass. He wore only breeches, his sculpted torso exposed and long, dark hair loose about his shoulders.

"I know you're an evil, lecherous creature and I know what you did that night in my room." She curled her lip and rose to her feet, anger battling with fear inside her.

She couldn't help the rage she felt knowing he'd invaded her privacy, nor could she stop the fear coursing through her at standing alone in the moonlight with a daemon.

"I didn't do nearly as much as I wanted to," he admitted, his glistening gaze upon her.

He continued walking toward her and she backed up until she felt the tree trunk behind her. When he stood mere inches away, so close that she felt his breath on her lips, caught the delicious scent of sandalwood and saw the pattern of dark, curling hair on his chest, her heart leapt.

In spite of her anger, fear and confusion, she experienced an even stronger emotion. Passion. It rushed through her, heating her very blood, dampening her pussy and turning her nipples to stiff, aching peaks of desire.

"I have no idea what you mean, sir," she said with more calmness than she felt.

"Yes you do. I can practically smell your lust."

"Get away from me." She tried to move but he braced a hand on either side of her head, trapping her against the tree trunk.

"I should. A woman like you can bring nothing but trouble."

"Me? Trouble?" she snapped. "You're the demon. The fiend."

"Daemons aren't always fiends and reverends' daughters aren't necessarily angels."

"How dare you!"

"Yes I saw you touching yourself, Abigail." He leaned even closer and spoke into her ear, his voice a husky whisper, "I heard you call my name."

"Get away!" She shoved him hard and immediately wished she hadn't. The sensation of his rock-hard, hair-dusted chest against her palms stoked her desire.

He moved back slightly, but grasped her hands and trapped them against his chest. To her surprise she felt his heart thumping against her hands. Why had she thought an immortal creature wouldn't have a heartbeat? His body felt remarkably human and so virile her knees went weak from the contact. Before she realized what she was doing, she tightened her fingers in his chest hair, stroked the steely muscles and relished the warmth of his flesh.

Licking her lips, she tilted her face toward his. If he'd looked at her with his usual arrogant expression, she would have fought him. Instead he wore a look of raw, almost desperate lust.

"I'm going to kiss you, Abigail," he said.

"Are you asking?" she breathed.

He shook his head slightly and bent so his mouth hovered over hers. "No I'm telling you." His lips claimed hers with a firmness that left no room for protest. Not that she wanted to protest. Everything about him made her tingle from head to toe. With Tyrus she felt more alive than she ever had in her entire boring, sheltered life.

The feelings she had for this creature were wrong, yet she could no more control her desire than she could stop her heart from beating.

His tongue traced the shape of her mouth then parted her lips and thrust inside her mouth, exploring with rough yet tender strokes. Her tongue met it hesitantly at first. Waves of passion washed over her. She'd never imagined a mating of tongues, of licking and tasting a man so intimately. Of course she wasn't a child and knew all about mating, or at least she thought she knew. Understanding the steps meant little when faced with actual experience.

No words could adequately describe the sensation of a man's hard, warm body pressed close to hers, or the feeling of his steely arms wrapped around her, embracing her so tightly she forgot where her body ended and his began. Nothing had prepared her for the marvel of his wet tongue stroking and caressing hers.

The ache between her legs became so acute that she needed something to appease it and that something pressed hard and ready against her. As if reading her mind, he took one of her hands and guided it lower until she cupped the enormous bulge in his breeches.

Abigail gasped with surprise and stiffened a bit, but he refused to stop kissing her. His lips and tongue moved against her more aggressively until she relaxed, her mouth open wide, accepting every thrust of his tongue. Lost in sensation, she closed her eyes. Slowly she stroked his cock and for the first time wished to feel it without the restraints of his clothes. Dare she?

She released him only to tug down the waist of his breeches. His thick, hard, satin-skinned cock sprang free and she curled her fist around it.

"Mmm," she purred, scarcely believing what was happening to her. Did this daemon have her under some kind of spell or had all the years of restraint finally caught up with her?

She wanted hands other than her own to touch her and she wanted to keep touching him as well.

Finally he broke the kiss and she leaned against him, gasping, her hand tight on his cock, her cheek resting against his warm, hard shoulder.

"Abigail," he murmured, nuzzling her neck while at the same time wrapping his hand around hers and showing her how to stroke him.

To her surprise he grew even bigger and harder. Now simply stroking him wasn't enough. She wanted to feel every inch of his erection. Her thumb strayed to the head and she found the tip of it wet. She spread the moisture over the crown and along a prominent vein along the underside. Tyrus groaned, a sound of pleasure-pain, and tightened his arms around her. Inspired by his reaction, she continued her exploration. She alternated between stroking the entire shaft and teasing the head and underside. Touching him increased her desire to a fevered pitched. Her legs felt weak and she knew if he wasn't supporting her she'd probably be on her knees by now. Her pussy and clit felt so hot and aching, so needful.

"Please," she murmured.

"What, love?"

"Please touch me."

With another groan of raw desire, Tyrus pushed her against the tree trunk, knelt in front of her and lifted her skirt. Lost in a haze of passion, Abigail had no idea of his intention until she felt his warm wet mouth close over her clit.

"Ah!" she cried out in surprise and pleasure and buried her fingers in his hair, gripping his scalp tightly.

He didn't seem to mind.

Tyrus' tongue swept over her aroused flesh. His lips tugged upon it then he began licking and sucking in a fast, steady rhythm.

GUEST AUTHOR INTERVIEW: SHARA LANEL

KH: Would you tell us about your anthology, Tastes of Pleasure: Taking it to the Edge, and your novella, The Men on Mars?

SL: Tastes of Pleasure: Taking It to the Edge consists of twelve short stories designed to get right to the good stuff. No waiting around. Since they were so short, I could experiment with different narrative styles, characters and settings and just have fun.

Now The Men on Mars started as a freebie serial story for my newsletter. Then I realized I was having too much fun with it. I really liked Ju, Nate and Freddy. I'd never written sci-fi before, but I'd been inspired by a marathon of Firefly on DVD. I plan to write a sequel soon, which will be Freddy's story. The idea is percolating.

KH: You've recently had a paperback release. Would you tell us about that?

SL: The Zodiac Series: Air is a 6-author anthology with stories based on the air signs of Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. My story "Directing Claire" is the first Gemini story. The tag line is: "How far will Claire and Devon go to put a mobster in jail--knowing the cameras are rolling?" Available on Amazon, an anthology like this is a great way to taste several authors all in one book.

KH: Please tell us about Secrets & Spies, your upcoming novel from New Concepts Publishing?

SL: I started with this "what if": how many ways can telekinesis screw up your life? Casey Summers has issues with her "gift" and Parker has been assigned to protect her as the spies start to come out of the woodwork. I wanted this book to be a fun action adventure with lots of romance and steamy sex. It was also a chance to relive the summer I spent in Mexico as an exchange student. Some of the scenes, like the one in the airport, were definitely inspired by my own experiences. If you loved Romancing the Stone, I think you'll enjoy this book.

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

SL: The guys with vulnerabilities are the ones who fascinate me. Yes, they're sexy, strong, and skilled (oh so skilled...), but it's the weaknesses they can't conquer that make them interesting and lovable. I find myself giving them non-traditional issues, like a virgin ex-monk, an agoraphobic hermit, and a Fed with high blood pressure--just to make them sweat when all they want to be is strong he-men in front of their heroines.

KH: How about a great romance heroine?

SL: I like a heroine who is down-to-earth, smart, sarcastic. She'll drive the hero insane, but her spunk makes him feel alive...and horny. And generally my heroine's have some faulty thinking, some emotional issues, that get in the way of love. I really like the heroine's who are just a bit left of normal.

KH: Do you have a website, blog, newsletter or email where readers can reach you?

SL: My web site is www.sharalanel.com and on there you can find the link to my blog and excerpts to all of my books, plus I often run giveaway contests. I also have a newsletter called Shara's E Zone: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sharasezone/join

KH: Thank you, Shara!

EXCERPT FROM DIRECTING CLAIRE (FROM THE ZODIAC SERIES: AIR) BY SHARA LANEL

The Zodiac Series: Air

"I can't wear these!" Her voice was a bit louder and higher than she would have liked, causing Jim to glance her way from his place by the tripod-mounted camera.

The roar of an engine filled the warehouse. Then they heard doors slamming. "Shit!" Devon slammed the trunk closed and stripped off his shirt. "Now. Put them on now."

"I can't."

He gripped her arms and squeezed. "Do you want to die?" His eyes were deadly serious, almost panicked. She wanted to question him, but she couldn't doubt what was evident in his eyes. "Hurry. Leave your clothes behind the screen. Get on the bed immediately, and follow my lead. We just have to get through this, okay? Then you never have to see us again."

Claire acted immediately as a knock sounded on the outer door, booming through the warehouse. Jim cocked his head in question at Devon. Devon went to sit on the bed and nodded. Claire dashed behind the screen. She'd never undressed faster. "Now!" Devon's voice warned her that she'd better come out from behind the screen. She tiptoed out and he waved frantically to get her over to the bed, while Jim spoke to someone at the front door, someone hidden from Claire's view. She crossed her arms over her chest and walked toward the hulking bed.

"Come on. Right next to me," Devon said. He patted the bed and Claire sat down.

Why did he get to stay in jeans? Because his chest was to die for. She salivated as she stared at his broad, lean pecs. Flat brown nipples asked to be licked. He had just the right amount of curly brown chest hair. He exuded masculinity.

Claire felt the warmth of his denim-clad thigh the moment she sat down, but she tried to focus her mind on the role she needed to play. "Is there a script?"

"There is a script, but you don't have time to learn it. Hell, I didn't even memorize it, because I wasn't supposed to be one of the actors." He swore again, watching Jim and the men entering the door. He rubbed a hand over his chin, then turned and seemed to notice Claire seated next to him for the first time. Really notice.

"Holy shit." He looked right down her cleavage. The baby doll gown was sheer and trimmed with satin strings. It didn't hide the lace bra or thong underneath. Instead it accentuated them. Claire knew she had a nice flat stomach and ample chest, which she attributed mostly to genetics, but she still didn't consider herself gorgeous or anything.

She was too introverted and shy, and she lacked a flair for make-up or fashion. The characters in the stories she wrote knew how to dress at least, even if she didn't.

Jim led the newcomers through the warehouse to the set. One man walked slowly, with a limp and a cane.

"This is it." Devon gripped her hand hard. His voice was low, so the approaching men wouldn't hear him. "These guys are dangerous. Think 'Sopranos', okay? If they think we're faking anything, we're dead, got it?"

"Devon?"

"Huh?"

"What kind of film are we making?"

EXCERPT FROM CARNAL DISCIPLINE BY KATE HILL:

Coming soon from Changeling Press.

"Should we undress her?" Julian glanced in Curt's direction.

Vesta looked over her shoulder at the Captain. He pulled off his shirt and tossed it on a chair. Vesta went weak at the sight of his gorgeous torso. Somehow standing there shirtless, wearing his uniform trousers and boots, he looked even more powerful than usual.

A low growl of arousal rumbled in Julian's chest and Vesta glanced at him. She noted he also stared intently at Curt's bare chest.

Julian had a great body, too, and was taller than Curt. She could scarcely wait to see them both naked. Though she loved the idea of them fucking her, she looked forward to seeing them kiss and fondle each other. Something about two handsome, sleekly muscled men locked in each other's embrace was a major turn-on.

"Yes. Let's undress her," Curt said and approached them.

Julian unzipped her dress and slid it down her shoulders. He pushed it over her hips while Curt unfastened her bra. She straightened her arms so he could remove the bra easily.

Vesta's heart pounded with excitement. This was a fantasy come true, having Curt and Julian at the same time.

Julian slid down her panties and she stepped out of them as well as her high-heeled sandals. Standing, Julian flung aside her clothes and Vesta gazed up at him. He was quite tall and slim, yet his shoulders were broad and his chest strong. Quickly she began unbuttoning his shirt, eager to caress his bare flesh.

Stepping so close behind her that she felt his hair-dusted chest brush against her back, Curt covered her hands with his and said, "What did I tell you about patience?"

Vesta smiled and raised her eyes to the heavens. She met Julian's gaze. "Did he give you the lesson in patience, too?"

"I believe the word he used was discipline." Julian's eyes gleamed with arousal.

"You both still have a lot to learn," Curt said. He nuzzled Vesta's neck and whispered in her ear. "Slowly."

Her hands trembled a bit as she resumed unbuttoning Julian's shirt, taking her time. While she worked on the shirt, Curt stepped away and finished undressing, though he kept his gaze on his partners, ready to reprimand Vesta if she moved too quickly. Her stomach tightened with excitement. Usually she and Julian dove into bed where he gently fondled her to wetness then made love to her until they exploded in climax. With Curt, everything was different. Foreplay was an art and the act itself a wild fuck powerful enough to hurl her into oblivion.

When she finally unfastened the last button, Vesta sighed with pleasure and stroked Julian's sleek, hair-dusted chest. She bent to lick his nipple, using the tip of one fang to gently scrape it. Julian groaned and held her closer. Curt joined them. He unbuckled Julian's belt, unzipped his trousers and pulled them down.

Moving slightly away from her, Julian quickly removed his shoes and socks.

Curt took Vesta's hand and kissed it, then guided her toward the bed. "Lie on your back," he told her.

Hi, Everyone!

Welcome to the May issue of my newsletter.

I'm pleased to announce this month's guest is Samara King, author of the vampire novella Scarlet Ties: Tempted. Read more about Samara and her work in her interview below.

The Find Your Dream Stallion quiz at my website has been updated, so if you have a chance try the quiz at http://www.kate-hill.com/horsemen/horsemenquiz.html.

Last month Carnal Discipline, the last book in my Carnal series, was released by Changeling Press. Coming up in June I have two books tentatively scheduled for release. Rediscovering Thor (re-release) is a paranormal romance about a Viking warrior who is abducted by aliens and awakens in present day Boston. Savage Amusement is a sci-fi vampire novella about two enemies who find each other irresistible.

For other book news, I'm happy to say The Horse Tamer's Bride, the last book in my Unconquered historical romance series, was accepted by New Concepts Publishing. Right now I'm working on the sequel to Windswept, a m/m shapeshifter romance recently released by Ellora's Cave, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an acceptance on that one.

On Tuesday 05/15/2007 stop by the Ellora's Cave chat group for the Night Whispers authors loop day.

Also I hope you can join me on Wednesday 05/16/2007 from 11am-4pm EST at the Changeling Press reader loop.

For a year rivalry has burned between spaceship pilots Starla Midnight of Amazurn and Gunther Morningsky, an overbearing alien crossbreed who oozes more testosterone than a bull in mating season. She can still hear his infuriating laughter when her engine fizzled out before last year's Speed of Light race--the most popular race in the galaxy. This year she plans to give the jerk a dose of his own stinkin' medicine.

Before the race she attempts to sabotage his engine but is caught in the act by Gunther himself. Chained in the alien's lair, she's given two choices. If she makes love with him, he'll release her in time for the race. If she refuses he'll hold her until after the race. Either way he's guaranteed to win, so it matters little to him.

Starla can't let a challenge like that slip by, not when she knows her ship is fast enough to blow Morningsky's out of space. She'll submit to the gorgeous alien's lustful kisses and body hotter than volcanic rocks. It's a tough decision, but a woman's got to do what a woman's got to do.

GUEST AUTHOR INTERVIEW: SAMARA KING

KH: Would you tell us about your recent Changeling Press release, Scarlet Ties: Tempted?

SK: Scarlet Ties: Tempted is about Vampire hero, Coye Rayven (twin brother of Cyrus Rayven in Scarlet Ties: Taste). Coye is a bite of a player who loves women, only he meets his match with Southern Belle, Noely Lamont who has a mission of her own: to seduce Cyrus, that was until she has an erotic encounter with the wrong brother!

KH: Would you tell us about Flirting With Danger that will be coming soon from Loose Id?

Arieona "Aries" Roman has been left at the altar twice by two vampires no less! When a million dollars of diamonds are stolen; Aries puts her jilted heart aside and travels to the Caribbean to seek out a thief and never expected to come face to face with ex-lover, Quentin De Leon. Despite her no-strings, just sex approach, Aries soon finds herself consumed by lust for a man who walked out of her life, but not her heart.

Quentin De Leon has always known that his life as a Guardian would force him to battle with the on thing he's desired most: Aries. His job is to stop her from going against an immortal enemy that could destroy them both, but will his desire to possess her body and soul blind him as evil strikes and possibly cause him to loose the woman he loves more than his own immortality.

KH: What are you working on now?

SK: Right now, I'm working on The Hoodoo You Do, a witch story and Fanged...and Single, and a single-title project.

KH: What is your favorite romance sub-genre?

African-American/Multicultural/Interracial romance (that's cheating, huh?) But I enjoy all of these sub-genres, each add such variety to the romance genre as a whole.

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

SK: He's got to be real, vulnerable but strong and of course, sexy!

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

SK: Coye Rayven. The man just seems like he'd have you smiling or sighing.

KH: Do you have a website, blog, newsletter or email where readers can reach you?

SK: I sure do. My website is: http://www.samaraking.com. My blog: http://cocoakisses.blogspot.com.

KH: Thank you, Samara!

SK: Thank you for having me, Kate!

EXCERPT FROM SCARLET TIES: TEMPTED BY SAMARA KING (ANISA DAMIEN)

Scarlet Ties

Blurb:

Noely Lamont is a Southern Belle extraordinaire and, like every Southern woman, she knows how to get her man. Soon she's to become the queen of the Companions and the elders have chosen the vampire Cyrus Rayven, the man who vehemently resisted her advances, as her mate. Noely plans to bring him to his knees, but she didn't count on meeting her match in his twin brother Coye or the red-hot passion that he ignites within her.

Coye Rayven couldn't be more intrigued by the hellion who had her sights set on his recently engaged brother. He'll do Cyrus the service of taking care of Ms. Lamont -- starting with the lusty appetite that rivals his own. To do that, he'll tempt her, body and soul.

Excerpt:

"The man is scheduled to be married in a matter of days."

Noely turned in the direction of her assistant and friend Melanie's voice. They'd taken a day to indulge in tranquility at the spa. The knots in her shoulders proved there was nothing at peace within her, especially after her conversation with her mother.

Mel's statement barely registering, Noely looked at a chipped fingernail, thinking she had to schedule a manicure. "I thought the wedding was sometime next year."

"Ah, no!" Melanie pushed the wire-rimmed glasses up on her nose. The frown marring her pretty face was enough for Noely to tsk at her.

"Don't scowl, it'll give you wrinkles." She really hated deviations. "I'll have to step up my plan."

"Are you listening to a word coming out of my mouth?"

"It's hard not to when you keep yelling at me." She'd always been rough on her hands despite what the general population thought of her. The crème de la crème of socialites. Those people could kiss her ass. She was the daughter of Senator Lawrence and Damara Lamont of Atlanta. A Southern debutante removed to the gray skies and icy temperatures of the Windy City.

Noely didn't give a damn what people thought of her. She never had. It unnerved her that some thought they knew what she was about, as if they counted the seconds before she was caught up in some sex scandal. She had morals… values. Unfortunately for Cyrus Rayven's unsuspecting fiancée, none of those applied to her, not when destiny was at work -- forces beyond her control. Forces she'd fought for years to no avail.

"Calm down, Melanie." Noely rose from the massage chair she'd been sitting in, aware of the suggestive glances sent her way in the unisex day spa. She pulled her hair into a ponytail, wrapping the terry cloth robe around her ebony-hued curves. "What Cyrus doesn't know won't hurt him."

"It's you that could be hurt."

"I'm a big girl. I think I can handle him."

"Hello! You can't just ignore his fiancée."

Noely waved her hands, dismissing her friend's worries. "A minor snafu."

Melanie shook her auburn curls. "Have you lost your ever-loving mind? There's a rumor she's pregnant."

"Where did you get that little tidbit?" Noely asked, turning around sharply. Surely a pregnancy would have been reported from her sources. Wouldn't it?

"I read it in the Inquisitor."

"You believe that crap? If I told you how many times my family's escapades were gossiped about back home in the local paper, sugar, you'd turn three shades of red." And that blush would be hard to hide. Melanie's ivory skin and red curls were a sharp contrast with her own mocha complexion and razor-cut whiskey-brown hair.

"I'm just trying to be the voice of reason. You know, the friend that you paid me to be." Melanie tossed her a wicked smile.

Noely grinned. "I must not be paying you enough if that's the case." She loved Mel. They'd been friends ever since she'd opened her interior design business two years ago. It was usually her friend's voice of reason that saved her from major disasters.

Not this time!

There was something about his eyes that beckoned her, tempted her to want to know everything about him. Deep down, she knew it was more than just his molten looks that called to her. They were mates. It was prophesied.

The only catastrophe would be not seducing Cyrus Rayven. She liked challenges. The first time they'd met, he'd barely acknowledged her advances. She'd failed once and that didn't sit well with her. Not with stakes this high. She couldn't fail again. Too much was at risk.

EXCERPT FROM KNIGHTS OF THE RUBY ORDER: TORN BY KATE HILL:

Available as an ebook and in paperback from Ellora's Cave.

Honey Wine hated him.

Not that she particularly liked any of the creatures she cared for. She was just a keeper in a zoo of wild, looming beasts, forced by her own master to stitch their wounds, set their broken bones, and watch the weak ones die in misery. Liking any of them would be too painful, akin to befriending a pig or a chicken, all the while knowing they were only meant for slaughter.

She felt little or nothing for most of them, but she hated him from the first.

He didn't look like the others. His hair, a mass of dark waves, hung just below his ears. No ragged, filthy beard marred his smooth face, only bruises and fresh blood covered his oval chin and high cheekbones. Shrewd eyes, the same blue-gray as a northern ocean, stared at her from beneath dark, heavy brows. His nose was straight, well shaped. Most likely he won't have that long, once he goes to the Entertainment, Honey Wine thought as she washed her hands in a basin of water. As if reading her mind, he smiled slightly, the almost imperceptible motion causing a fresh trickle of blood to moisten the dried, sanguine crust on his lower lip and chin. Rather than helpless, his smile appeared arrogant.

Like all the new ones, he'd been stripped naked, his wrists and ankles shackled together, making long strides impossible. She knew by the length of his lean, muscled legs that such a restriction must annoy him, and she nearly smiled at the thought. He hadn't even spoken to her, but she despised the lack of fear in his eyes. She loathed his cool expression and the haughty carriage he managed even when bound like a naked monkey between four guards prodding him with the handles of their leather whips. They dragged so hard on his iron manacles that blood stained his hands and feet.

"Get in there, beast." Bron, the head guard, scowled, shoving the prisoner into the small holding cell. The captive's large, long-fingered hands braced flat against the wall to keep his face from sustaining further damage.

Bron glanced at Honey Wine through his gridded metal helmet and said, "The Mistress wants this one examined so we can prepare him for the Entertainment."

She grasped her wooden box of supplies and moved toward the cell. "Step back, you bunch of stinking dogs. I need space."

Bron's eyes bulged with fury, and his hand tightened on the whip, but he knew better than to challenge Honey Wine. She was not merely a slave healer, but had been one of the guards. The Mistress was also her sister, though the spiteful monarch had banished Honey Wine to this hellish prison.

"Don't give me that mangy look." Honey Wine curled her lip at him. "I used to be your superior, remember?"

Bron cursed under his breath and turned away with his men, except for one.

Timus, the youngest of the guards, a burly man Honey Wine had known since childhood, leaned close to her and whispered, "Be careful of that one. It took eight guards to bring him down, and six of them are still being tended by healers as we speak."

She nodded, and Timus unlocked the cell to let her inside. The prisoner turned and watched her curiously. She avoided his penetrating eyes as she looked over his body. He was tall but too thin for her taste. Though his neck was strong and his shoulders broad, every bone and muscle stood out on his sinewy body, like a fanatical monk who never ate quite enough. Perhaps he was. No, he has the power and grace of a predator, and the guards would never have chosen a man who could provide little entertainment. Also, Timus had just said the beast had given eight armed guards trouble.

She stepped closer, feeling the heat of the chase emanate from his body. His skin gleamed with sweat, and rivulets of blood from a number of shallow wounds streaking his chest, arms, and legs. His cock dangled thick yet flaccid. She swallowed her disgust.

"Sit," she stated.

He stared at her, the strong ridge of his brow shadowing his sapphire eyes, making him look almost primitive. She repressed a shudder.

"Animals. Where do the guards find such animals?"

GUEST AUTHOR INTERVIEW: DANI HARPER

KH: Would you tell us about your novel Heart of the Winter Wolf?

DH: I think the blurb probably describes the story best in the fewest words.

Jillian Descharme has rebuilt her life after a terrifying ordeal. Veterinary diploma in hand, she accepts a job at a clinic in the far-flung northern town of Dunvegan. By day, she works passionately to heal animals. By night she dreams of a white wolf, a fantasy that once helped her survive the worst of nightmares. Soon her dreams change to include a tall and troubled stranger – one who ignites fantasies of a very different kind.

James Macleod is a Changeling who lost everything dear to him in a single night of blood and fire. Devastated by guilt and driven by grief, he becomes a great white wolf and vows never to walk as a man again. Decades pass and the vow is kept – until a small blonde veterinarian shakes his resolve and his world. Now James must remember how to be human and walk in his human skin again in order to solve a frightening riddle: Who is this beautiful woman and why is his wolfen side hunting her?

It's not long before Jillian discovers that the white wolf is no dream. And neither is the powerful man whose touch excites every cell in her body. Yet while the wolf proves friendly and tame, James Macleod is anything but! Jillian is a talented veterinarian but it'll take more than medicine to heal a Changeling heart. Can she teach James the real meaning of survival and help him to embrace life again?

KH: Would you tell us about your upcoming releases?

DH: Heart of the Winter Wolf was just released May 11th, so I'm afraid that IS my upcoming release! It's my first published novel but I've been writing since I was three and scribbling wiggly lines on paper with my crayons. I spent my childhood reading voraciously and writing epic tales (okay, I thought they were epic – they were long at least!). Later I traded in the crayons for a computer at a newspaper and eventually sat in the editor's chair. I moved on to write for magazines and so forth, but really didn't get started writing fiction again until 2001. Best thing I ever did! It was like coming home – this is truly my passion.

KH: What are you working on now?

DH: Heart of the Winter Wolf is the first in the Dunvegan Wolf Clan series. I'm working on books two and three right now. Which is a good thing, because I've already had readers ask me for more about the family of characters I created in Heart of the Winter Wolf. That's been flat-out thrilling, to have readers ask for more because they were able to connect with the characters that much. And as much as I adore werewolves, I've got a couple of vamp novels well underway and just waiting for me to get back to them.

KH: What is your favorite thing about writing romance?

DH: I'm fascinated by the different ways people come together, and how they react to each other. That makes for an infinite variety of stories to write because no two relationships are the same just as no two people are the same. And I've chosen paranormal romance in particular because I've loved all things supernatural since I was a kid – and there's just so much possibility and so much fuel for the imagination!

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

DH: My ideal hero is tough and strong and smart, but he also has the capacity to love deeply. He has integrity and compassion, plus unexpected tenderness. I love workingmen who are smart and skilled, who get dirty and sweaty – and who can still be tender with a tiny baby or a puppy. There's nothing more moving than that. And a truly great hero is able to appreciate the heroine's strengths and have confidence in her – he'll back off when she needs to fight her own battles, but step in when the world is punching her out. That's a fine line to walk sometimes and he doesn't always get it right, but he tries.

At present, the heroes in my books are usually werewolves or vamps, so they have an extra gift or two, but it doesn't make their lives—or their love lives—easier. In fact, a gift like that usually comes with complications, and I love to watch my characters learn to cope with those.

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

DH: Oh, that's a tough one. I do like James from Heart of the Winter Wolf. He really does match my ideal hero description. He has to recover from tragedy and loss and eventually make the decision to rejoin human life. I admire that he's so determined to do the right thing for Jillian, no matter how much pain it costs him. And he's a complex character too, always thinking.

Speaking of thinking, that's something I try to do in my books: give the hero and the heroine equal time. I want the readers to see inside the heads of both characters, watch both of them learn and grow.

KH: Do you have a website, blog, newsletter or email where readers can reach you?

DH: Boy, do I! It's amazing how MANY ways there are to connect with people these days. My website is www.romancingthewolf.com and I can be emailed at dani@romancingthewolf.com. Then there's MySpace – I have a lot of fun with that! http://www.myspace.com/romancingthewolf (I welcome new friends by the way!) You'll find my blog on my MySpace site too. Bebo fans will find me at http://romancingthewolf.bebo.com and I've posted the prologue and first chapter of my book at http://HeartoftheWinterWolf.bebo.com Phew! That's a lot of addresses!

KH: Thank you, Dani!

DH: Thanks so much for inviting me!

EXCERPT FROM HEART OF THE WINTER WOLF BY DANI HARPER

Winter Wolf An unedited excerpt from HEART OF THE WINTER WOLF
A full-length paranormal romance from New Concepts Publishing
© 2007 Dani Harper

The dream had long since faded, but James Macleod couldn't seem to wake up. Instead, he drifted slowly towards full consciousness like a diver rising in measured stages from some dark ocean depths. The wolf was there too, with him and part of him at the same time. Despite the strange duality, James knew he wasn't dreaming anymore. And he found himself able to ponder the meaning of the dream. Memory. It wasn't a dream, it was a memory. If it was a memory, that meant he had killed Jillian's attackers. Even though he had never taken human life before, even though it was forbidden to do so by Changeling law, he had no regrets. Not only was he certain the men would have preyed on others if left alive, the protection of another Changeling or a pack member was a higher law. Protection of a mate superseded all.

A mate. Why did that cross his mind?

The wolf stirred within. Mate. Mine. Ours.

Not that again. Look, hanging around with Jillian is going to put her in danger!

Protect her. Mate. Ours.

Stop saying that. We need to leave her alone, do you hear me?

Alone, danger. Together, safe. Mate. Ours.

Goddamn it, since when do you know how to talk? I can't believe I'm arguing with-- James woke at last, but the wolf was gone. At least his awareness of the wolf was gone; he could no longer be certain that the damn wolf ever really left. Exasperated, he rolled over and opened his eyes--and froze as he realized two things simultaneously. One, he was in the hayloft at the animal clinic again. And two, he was human. He sat straight up, ran his hands over his face, his fingers through his hair. Human. No mistake. He must have Changed in his goddamn sleep, because he certainly hadn't done it on purpose. Had the dream brought it on somehow, or had the wolf called the Change? And just how the hell had he managed to get all the way back to the North Star Animal Hospital?

James struggled to his feet, feeling disoriented and strange, needing to get to the window and determine time of day--of whatever the hell day it was--by the angle of the sun. He leaned a hand on the window frame to steady himself, gulped in the fresh dew-moistened air and took stock of his impossible situation. His brother, Connor, didn't seem to think that wolf and human personas could separate, but for James, the evidence was indisputable. There was no longer any doubt that his wolf side had recognized Jillian, sensed her, and come to her aid in the past. And no doubt that now the wolf was trying to maneuver James into complying with its current plan for survival, a plan that centered around Jillian.

Mate. Mine, the wolf had said. James was dead set against the idea, yet there appeared to be limits to his choices. He could control his human side. The wolf, however, had become a wild card and was becoming bolder in its determination to take the lead. If James had no control over his wolfen side, could not order it to stay away from her, then Jillian was already in danger.

A mate. Even if he had dared to want such a thing, he didn't deserve it. Not after what had happened to Evelyn. Weary in body, heart, and soul, James sank onto a bale and dropped his head into his hands. The crushing weight of guilt on his shoulders was as familiar as the endless litany that echoed through his mind. Should have known there was danger, should have been more alert, should never have left Evelyn alone. Should h
