Welcome to the July issue of my newsletter. I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer so far.
June was an exciting month for me. I had three new ebooks released and two of my books also became available in paperback -- Knights of the Ruby Order: Torn and Crag from Ellora's Cave and Wicked Delights (anthology with Adrienne Kama, Lisa G. Riley, and Kimberly Kaye Terry) from New Concepts Publishing.
I also have two new stories recently contracted by Changeling Press. Carnal Surrender is an interracial vampire/werewolf ménage. An excerpt from Carnal Surrender has been included in this month's newsletter and the cover and blurb are below in the upcoming releases section. Also Changeling will be publishing the last book in the Elixir Maidens series called Bitten, Again.

KH: Would you tell us about your new book Under A Viking Moon?
TD: Under A Viking Moon is a time travel romantic adventure. It is a story of Legends, family loyalty, responsibility, honor, determination, trust and betrayal. I strove to make my hero, Leif, a Norse Jarl who lived in the year 900, and my heroine, Kat, a modern young woman who has survived the streets of San Francisco on her own since she was fifteen years old, strong characters who each have their individual goals and responsibilities, strengths and weakness. Their challenge is compelling as they are sweep through time, each has the charge to save their family lines very existence and the only way either can do so is to destroy what they love the most. KH: What is your favorite romance subgenre to read?
TD: Without a doubt, time travel.
KH: Would you tell us about some of your upcoming projects?
TD: I am working on the sister book for Under A Viking Moon, entitled Dawn of A Viking Sunrise. This book will take Kat’s best friend, Rosie, on a roller coaster ride through time where she quite literally falls into love. I had not intended to write a sequel to UAVM, but Rosie’s plot woke me up in the middle of the night and has all but written itself, in my head at least, to bad that pesky day job takes so much of my waking time. I am also in the plotting stage of a project that both terrifies and exhilarates me. My darling husband, Heap, is a native of Cambodia. He and his family were forced to escape their homeland during the genocide of the 70’s. He has asked me to write of their amazing journey, I only hope that I can do it justice. On top of that, my first completed manuscript, a historical romance (one that absolutely no one wanted to buy) has been hidden in the bottom of my closet for at least two years. I have held on to this work of my heart, my first literary effort, not bearing the thought of letting it go, while at the same time having no ideal how to ‘fix’ it. Then just a couple of days ago, well, actually nights ago –why does my muse work the graveyard shift?—It hit me. The light in my head went on and I now know how to salvage this book. I jumped out of bed, typed some frantic notes, and have great hopes that I will be able to recapturing the inspiration when I have time to sit down and dig in on it. We’ll see.
KH: What makes a great romance hero?
TD: To me a great romantic hero is not necessarily a hunk (although Leif is definitely hunky) but he is a man who is not afraid to make mistakes and then own up to them when they are realized. He is a man who respects women and is true to the woman who claims his heart. A great hero is a man who will fight to the bitter end to save not only the woman of his heart, but also his family and friends. He may not always do the right thing, but will always do so in the end.
KH: How about a great romance heroine?
TD: I like heroines who are strong and self sufficient and smart enough to know when they need help. Whether that help comes in the form of a shoulder to cry on, or a listening ear, or a guy who has great big muscles and a really sharp sword she will be willing to accept what is offered without thinking herself weak.
KH: If you could meet one of your characters, who would it be?
TD: That question is impossible to answer. I feel like I know my characters as well, if not better than, my own family. During the writing of Under A Viking Moon, I would lay awake nights and worry when I got Leif or Kat into a situation which I had no clue how I was going to get them out of, in one piece, and still speaking to one another. It is difficult to write that friction that we all love to read about between two characters and at the same time not make what they do to one another so terrible that we stop caring about the one doing it. Does that make since?
KH: Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

The servant slid the dress down Altah's torso and over her curvy hips. She stepped away from the garment. While the servant picked up the dress and placed it over a cushioned chair, Altah removed her slip, bra, and underpants. Naked, she studied her reflection in the mirror. Tall and well-padded, she considered herself attractive. Slanted amber eyes and full lips gave her face an exotic look inherited from her father's bloodline.
"Which nightgown would you like to wear tonight, My Lady?"
"The silver one, please, Kyla," she replied.
Kyla nodded and headed for the trunk at the foot of Altah's enormous bed covered in moss-green satin sheets and pillows. The Vampire Ruler's pulse leapt when she thought that tonight she would share that bed with two alpha Werewolves. She only hoped they hadn't injured each other so badly that their performance would suffer. Though she couldn't help feeling a hint of sorrow for the pain they had endured during the fights, she thrust such thoughts aside. They had chosen to accept the challenge insisted upon by their kind. It was Wolves who thought the binding ritual so important. When Rex and Kyros had been honored by being appointed her guardians, they'd rudely carried their personal vendettas into the palace walls. Such disrespect made them unworthy of her compassion.
Before Kyla could open the trunk and retrieve the nightgown, the chamber door burst open. The servant screamed at the sight of Kyros and Rex, their blue eyes gleaming and fangs bared.
They strode toward Altah and paused so close she felt heat emanating from their bodies and saw the sides of their strong necks pulsing to the staccato rhythm of their hearts. Still panting and from the physical and emotional strain of their fight, they defined Werewolves at their most savage. Their musky scent filled her with every breath. The wolfish pelts covering them from head to toe gleamed with blood and sweat, the muscles beneath well defined.
Altah drew a sharp breath and resisted the urge to bury her hands in their furred chests, if only to satisfy her curiosity about how they felt in their wolf form. Her gaze met Kyros' and a slight smile touched his lips, as if he sensed her attraction and curiosity. The two soldiers who had been stationed outside Altah's door staggered inside.
"We tried to stop them, My Lady," said one of the soldiers. He and his companion aimed their rifles at the Wolves, ready to fire at her signal.
"Wait," Altah commanded, then fixed her attention on the Werewolves. "Why have you come here, unwashed and unclothed?" Their gazes swept her nude body. Kyla quickly opened the trunk, took the silver nightgown and turned to Altah, but Rex tore the garment from the servant's hand.
"My Lady." Kyla looked frightened.
"You may go, Kyla."
"But--"
A fierce look from the Vampire Ruler sent the young woman scurrying out of the chamber.
"We have come to claim our reward," Kyros stated.
"My Lady?" One of the soldiers asked. Both watched the Werewolves with a hint of fear.
"Leave us," she ordered. They looked hesitant, so Altah repeated, "I said leave us. My guardians have arrived and your services are no longer required."
With a final glance toward the Werewolves, the soldiers left the chamber.
As soon as the door closed, Altah glared at Kyros and Rex. "Except for a life or death situation do not ever burst into my chamber like this again, especially covered in filth and--"
"We're covered in filth because of you," Rex said, his deep voice laced with anger. He ripped the nightgown sill clutched in his claws and flung it aside.
"You will be punished for this insult," Altah snapped.
Werewolves' strength and reflexes far surpassed that of Vampires. Altah had no time to react before Kyros grasped her wrist and tugged her against him. His arms wrapped snugly around her torso and he held her close to his chest. The hot, damp pelt felt strangely sexy against her flesh. He spoke close to her ear, his voice deep as Rex's but his phrasing shockingly cultured. "Have we not endured enough for your sake, My Lady? We deserve repayment for shed blood and ravaged flesh. I swear to you rewarding us will not be unpleasant."
"And I swear that unless you get your claws off of me, I will wear your balls on a bracelet," she snarled.
When Kyros' hold tightened the slightest bit, she turned her head and sank her fangs into his hand. Grunting, he shook her slightly.
"I'm surprised the lady soiled her fangs on your dirty flesh." Rex chuckled. He grasped her ankles and she kicked hard, yet he didn't release her.
The Wolves carried her, twisting and snarling, toward the bed.
"No! Don't ruin the sheets!" Altah shouted. "Take me in the bath. Through that door."
The men paused and held each other's gaze. From her position, she couldn't see Kyros' face, but Rex tilted his head to one side, his expression thoughtful.
"We'll fuck her in the bath," Rex said.
Altah's heart pounded wildly. In spite of her fury she couldn't control the thrills coursing through her at the thought of being claimed by these primal Wolves.
"Fuck me, you Wolf-swine?" Altah raged. "You don't fuck the Ruler of the Vampire Nation. You make love, if you're lucky!"
She felt Kyros chest rumble with laughter and Rex grinned savagely.
"One look in your eyes, My Lady, and it's obvious you don't want a man to make love with you," Rex said. His azure eyes shone like jewels against sleek black fur and long black hair. She wondered what he looked like in his human form, with smooth skin and claws withdrawn. And Kyros, how would he appear when the beast in him subsided? She could hardly wait to see.
"Any Wolf worth his teeth fucks. He fucks long and hard. He fucks until his woman screams from the pleasure," Kyros said, the crude language a contrast to his beautiful speaking voice.
His words tightened her belly, made her clit ache and her nipples tighten. They carried her through the door. A large square pool of heated water filled the center of the room. Moonlight shone through enormous oval windows and light from many candles placed at the corners of the bath glimmered on the water.
Near the pool were baskets filled with towels and containers of perfumed soap and oils.
Rex released her feet and Kyros swung her fully into his arms so that she was forced to hold his neck. For a moment their gazes locked and she noted his eyes were a bit larger and lighter blue than Rex's. Fringed with thick platinum lashes, they blinked slowly, seductively. She'd been with these men only a few moments, but already she was starting to know them.
Rex was all fire and raw emotion. He would willingly sacrifice his life for something he believed in. She guessed by his speech he had come from poor kin, but had worked his way up as a warrior. Kyros, though no less passionate, had learned to temper his emotions. He was crafty, his intelligence nurtured by a classical education. Most likely his kin were wealthy and of an upper class.
"You're a lovely bitch," Kyros said and before she could reprimand him, he covered her mouth with a kiss.
Her first impulse was to struggle, but curiosity and pure lust got the better of her. His firm, soft lips moved slowly against hers. Once she relaxed, he thrust his tongue into her mouth. With a soft sigh, she tightened her grip around his neck and met his tongue stroke for stroke. His fur tickled her face but to her surprise she felt it retract and become a man's smooth flesh. She opened her eyes to see him in his man form and he tossed her into the water.

AK: In Forsaken-Immortal Surrender, Ambrosia Kennedy is a CVH, a certified vampire hunter of the Talhari Council. The Talhari Council is an organization that works to dispatch immortals. Ambrosia's first assignment is to find out if the goth rock band, Forsaken are really vampires. To do this, she poses as the lead singer/guitarist of the rock band, Maven. She also must pretend an infatuation with Forsaken's lead singer. But sometime when she wasn't looking, the pretense became real. Will she be able to kill a vampire who she has feelings for?
KH: Would you tell us about your upcoming projects?
AK: My next release is The Chronicles of Stella Rice: Carnal Heat which will release on August 4th at NCP. Carnal Heat is the continuing story of Stella Rice. It chronicles her romantic menage with Jake Santos and Devlin Chambers while she figures out how to tell her family about her new relationship. Like the previous installment, this story has lots of hot scenes and lots of laugh out loud moments. I hope readers enjoy it.
KH: What are your favorite subgenres of romance?
AK: My favorite subgenres are fantasy, urban fantasy, and futuristic. I love a good fantasy.
KH: Do you find it easier to write your heroes or your heroines?
AK: Initially, the heroines are easier, but once I have a handle on the characters and their needs, the writing goes far smoother.
KH: How do you describe erotic romance?
AK: For me, erotic romance is romance that tells women it's all right to fantasize and dream.
KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?
AK: A man who truly adores the heroine. He may not initially come off as chivalrous, but when the heroine is in peril, he risks everything to save her.

Naldo's teeth ground, but he stepped away from Esmeralda, growled softly at Sadavis and stalked out of the club. Obviously he didn't want to risk a fight with the Court Jester outside the ring.
Esmeralda drew a deep breath, still irritated, and snapped, "I can take care of myself."
Sadavis' piercing gaze fixed on her, almost making her jump. "You're welcome."
He turned away and she realized how rude she must have sounded. After all it wasn't him she was angry with, but Conti.
"I'm sorry," she called. "Thanks for the help."
He paused and glanced over his shoulder. "I can see you're capable of taking care of yourself but I thought a little backup couldn't hurt anyone."
Feeling a bit sheepish, she smiled slightly and nodded, then sat and ordered another drink.
Sadavis sat on one of the stools halfway down the bar, his long legs stretched out on either side of him, the muscles straining against the snug denim. His beautiful hair draped him and she longed to run her fingers through it to find out if it was soft or coarse.
She studied his profile with the harsh lines of his forehead, nose and chin. Hideous yet undoubtedly unique and, she realized, rather sexy. Actually sexual magnetism seemed to ooze from his every pore like lava from a volcano. Everything about him was so masculine, so. . .intense.

Esmeralda took a sip from the drink the bartender placed in front of her, her gaze continually drifting back to Sadavis. For some reason she couldn't seem to ignore him.

KH: Gay romance is a popular subgenre and one of my personal favorites. How long have you been writing gay romance and why did you start?
LB: Hi Kate. Thanks for interviewing me. M/M romance is a very popular genre and has been for over 35 years. I started writing M/M romance three years ago when I wrote my first fanfcition slash story about a vampire and human doctor paired up in a fight for their lives against government forces. When my fanfiction was published by the character creators to accompany their film, it became very popular for them. Their distributor asked if they could find more like it. I agreed to try my hand at it and A BIT OF ROUGH, my first M/M erotic romance was born. I love men, adore men in love and think two hot men together in love and making love is a great turn on. Many straight women feel the same. I write for the romantic minded reader, both gay and straight. I haven't looked back since. I love writing M/M romance.
KH: There has been a lot of discussion lately about gay romance novels. Do you think there are any misconceptions regarding this subgenre of romance?
LB: Yes. Unfortunate most of the negative misconceptions are from people who haven't read any of it and don't understand the appeal. I personally don't like war novels or historical settings, but that doesn't mean I consider all novels containing them to be unfit to read by everyone. The misconceptions are unfortunate elements based on misunderstanding and lack of education about the subject. Gay men are not all involved in disease-riddled, endless lines of anonymous sex orgies, and solely focused on self-gratification 24/7 as some recent public forum comments would have us believe. Well, the self-gratification thing may be just an 'any man' thing from my experience with men in general. I'm not even saying that's a bad thing. KH: What would you like to tell readers about gay romance?
LB: Two people in love, regardless of genders, are simply that -- two people in love. It is just as romantic, moving and tender as anyone else's love affair, with a lot of the same conflicts and challenges any two people in a relationship face. As a straight woman, I find the fantasy of two hot, sensual men that are ravenously in love with each other very arousing and thrilling to read about. I love men. I love to write about them ravishing each other, doing fun things together, facing conflicts together, having arguments and making up afterward. I especially like that part. . In other words, gay romance is just like heterosexual romance. It's life. I write for romantic minded people who enjoy the same fantasy I do. Hot men loving each other in a passionate, loving committed relationship. KH: Would you tell us about the manlove site?
LB: Manloveromance.com and manloveauthors.com are my two websites devoted to the genre. I think it gay romance readers need to have a place where they can go and find the type of stories they want in one centralized location. Authors, artists and small publishers of M/M fiction need place to come together to show their numbers and support each other. We do banner exchanges, web rings and site links to inexpensively promote ourselves. That's what Manloveauthors is for. It's a free site for any one to join who writes or creates in the M/M fiction genre. The other site, Manloveromance.com, is an advertising co-op made up of M/M authors and artists to pool their financial resources together. We run advertising in the larger, more expensive venues to reach a wider target audience in the romance, slash and gay communities. We can do so much more as a united group than we could ever do on a individual budget. We have 32 members and that kind of financial combination is giving us the ability in the bigger marketplace to reach our readers! We're young, but it's been very successful so far for all of us.
KH: Would you tell us about your latest release and also what you have coming up in the future? LB: My latest release is actually my only non-romance todate. September saw the release of my political thriller "Flight of the Sparrows" with Aspen Mountain Press. Next up I have a short story for Halloween, also from Aspen Mountain Press, titled "Walk Through Fire'. It's a little vampire/vampire M/M romantic tale in their anthology "Creatures of the Night, Creatures of Delight" release is set for 10/13/06. Then at the end of this month I have another short, dark, M/M vampire/human story being released with Changeling Press tilted "Enthralled". I have a M/M vamp Christmas anthology short "Sin and Salvation" coming out with LooseId for the holidays. I just finished writing my contemporary M/M novel "Roughhousing" for Torquere Press, due to be released in January and followed by my contemporary M/M thriller "Mexican Heat" with them, as well. "Heat" will be in both ebook and print with Torquere, I'm proud and excited to say.
I'm also planning a few public appearances in the next few months as well. I'll be hosting a booth during the GayEroticExpo in NYC in mid-December with Manloveromance.com, doing a GLBT panel discussion at EPICON in March, and participating in the Faery Ball Court at RT in April. KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
LB: Meet, probably Adam from "Out There in the Night". Werewolves attract me. Animal magnetism thing. If I could be one of my characters it would be, NO question, James Justin. He has big, brawny, beefy, sweet-hearted, sexy, sensual Bram Lord wrapped around his little finger. PICK ME, PLEASE!

“You invited me.”
This time he laughed rather loudly and she dropped her hand from his arm. Her attraction to him had turned to anger and she was sorry she’d ever decided to come to this hellish house.
“I believe it’s time for me to go. Good night.” She turned abruptly and walked back toward the house.
“Go at this time of night? Without a carriage or even a horse?”
She stopped, her heart pounding, and listened to his boot heels click on the cobbles as he approached. He stepped in front of her and touched his hand to her chin. He’d removed his gloves before dinner and now the sensation of his warm skin against her once again rekindled her desire.
“You came here without your family knowing, didn’t you?” he asked quietly. “And, since you arrived with a bag, I take it you’ve left the house of your fine, upstanding father the reverend?”
She jerked her chin away from his touch and glared at him. “That is not your business.”
“I don’t believe for an instant my invitation was so alluring you’d leave home for it. Tell me why you left.”
“Why should I?”
“Because I’m asking and I might be able to assist you.”
“Assist me?” She glared. “I can only imagine how after visiting this. . .this house of decadence.”
“Do you think you can be honest for all of five minutes?”
Now she was truly offended. “What?”
“Everybody in this village and all those surrounding it knows the reputation of Python Place. I’m sure you were no exception. You wanted to come here because we don’t sicken you as much as you pretend. I saw the look in your eyes that day our paths crossed in the village square. I saw that same look tonight when we were dancing. You’re a lovely woman, Hailey Watson, and I want to know you better but I can’t do that if you lie to me and hide behind this prudish façade.”
Hailey’s head spun. No one had ever spoken to her like this before. Yes, her father had accused her of having impure thoughts, but no one had ever suggested that such thoughts were acceptable. No one had ever asked what she wanted or offered to help her follow a path she had chosen.
“Why me?” she asked, still holding his gaze. “There are dozens of women here who could offer you much more satisfaction than I can.”
“I doubt that.”
Her breath caught and she paused a moment, her gaze fixed on his, before she continued, “Why bother with me? Is it because you want to seduce a reverend’s daughter?”
Again he chuckled, genuine amusement shining in his eyes. “I’ve had reverends’ daughters before, though none quite so pure as you.”
“What makes you think I’m pure? I’m here, aren’t I?” she retorted.
“As long as you’re here, why not get what you came for?”
Her heart pounded and hot waves of passion washed over her. She’d come for him.
He placed his hands on her waist and tugged her closer. His mouth covered hers and Hailey closed her eyes and melted against him. No one had ever kissed her before and she had never dreamed it would feel this wonderful. His lips were soft yet at the same time firm and slightly moist. They moved gently against hers, asking yet at the same time demanding. When she felt the tip of his tongue against her lips, she opened her mouth to him and moaned softly. His tongue thrust against hers and she responded with fervor. Her hands gripped his shoulders, then slid up his neck to the back of his head. Clutching his thick, satiny hair, she surrendered to him completely.
When Adrien broke the kiss, she was breathless, her body throbbing with a need only he could fulfill. His lips caressed her cheek and neck. Her eyes closed, Hailey tilted her head and didn’t protest when he tugged down the sleeve of her dress so he could lick and kiss her shoulder.
“Soft,” he purred between kisses. “Deliciously fragrant and beautiful.”
Her lips parted, she allowed herself to float on a warm sea of pleasure. She didn’t protest when he lifted her in his arms. Actually she was grateful since her legs no longer seemed able to support her. Longing to taste him as well, she began kissing his neck and using the tip of her nose to gently outline his ear before she began licking and nipping that, too. The scent of sandalwood and raw male filled her and every wanton desire that had been locked inside her burst forth. For the first time in her life, she was truly Hailey, without pretense, without concern for what others thought. At that moment the only people who mattered were her and Adrien.

I have a couple of releases tentatively scheduled for this month. Handsome Bastard, the next story in my Ancient Blood series, is coming soon from Ellora's Cave. If you remember Vincent and Cody Dilorenzo from the series, Handsome Bastard is about their grandparents. The story is set in Ancient Rome and pits Cyprian Augustus, a vampire most feared by the hunters from the organization We Who Serve Humanity, against the ruthless hunter Leotine.
Also coming this month is book two of the Carnal series with Changeling Press. In Carnal Indulgence three rival pirates -- a vampiress called Chantel Fire Eyes and two alpha werewolves, Crispin Snaghand and Captain Andre, become unlikely allies in the search for a treasure that destroyed their families. During the search, the three become closer than they ever imagined possible.

GUEST AUTHOR INTERVIEW: KATE STEELE KH: Bond of the Maleri is a wonderful gay romance series. The heroes are easy to like and feel an attachment to when reading. How many books do you plan to have in this series and once it's over do you have any plans for a spin off series?
KS: First of all thank you for the compliments. I love this series. I guess it shows, lol. So far there are five books in the Bond of the Maleri' series: Mate Hunt, Double or Nothing, Between Love and Law, Ride ‘Em Cowboy and Redemption. Where I go from here, I'm not sure. I know I could come up with more but the question seems to be, should I. It's been suggested that I write a longer book with more details about the Maleri' home world and perhaps use some of the couples in the previous books, delve deeper into their lives etc. I think the idea has merit but I wonder about the possibility of burning my readers out with more Maleri' tales. I guess I need to take a poll. As for a spin off series I don't have any plans for that at the moment but, hmm, it's a possibility!
I can tell you that Changeling Press has contracted the first five books for a print volume which I guess is a good indication of its popularity. I know I'm over the moon excited about it!
KH: You write both gay and straight romance. Do you find one more difficult to write than the other or are they pretty much the same?
KS: The biggest difficulty between writing gay romance and straight is the pronouns, lol. Descriptions about who's doing what are much easier when you have a him and a her, rather than two hims. It can get a little confusing! Seriously though, there are definite differences in writing m/m as opposed to m/f. One of the biggest challenges in writing m/m is to not put a woman in a man suit. You have to keep in mind that you're writing about two men. There are definite differences between the way men and women react to certain situations and emotions.
KH: Would you tell us about your recent and upcoming releases?
KS: Changeling Press gave me the opportunity to release a new book with them every month which I'm striving to do. October brought, Why Did The Chicken? and November's release is, Bond of the Maleri' 5, Redemption, available on the 17th. November contains an embarrassment of riches for me. Coming from Loose-Id on November 21 is a m/m romantic suspense called, A Sure-Fire Cure, and on November 22, from Ellora's Cave, To Tempt A Wolf. To Tempt A Wolf is the long awaited sequel to my most popular book, To Trust A Wolf.
KH: What is your favorite thing about writing romance?
KS: It fulfills my fantasies. I can let my imagination loose, make anything happen and no matter what, at the end of the story, my characters will live happily ever after. It's a way of having what reality can't supply.
KH: What are some of your favorite genres/subgenres to read?
KS: I absolutely love werewolf stories. I also enjoy time travels and contemporary westerns. I have to admit I'm addicted to m/m romance so I read them in any genre. KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
KS: Logan Sutherland from To Trust A Wolf. I have to admit, for me, he's the ideal man. He's strong, tough, tender, understanding, a bit on the domineering side but willing to listen and compromise, oh and not to mention drop dead gorgeous and sinfully sexy. Of course if I met him, I wouldn't want to let him go, LOL!

The next couple of days passed with blessed normalcy. Dean saw his patients, including Doreen's boyfriend, who had a pet boa constrictor he'd named Squeeze. Dean had been hard-pressed to keep a straight face as he'd treated the acquiescent reptile. Squeeze had escaped confinement, knocked a glass from the counter he'd been investigating and promptly fell on top of it, emerging with a piece of glass imbedded in his skin. After the extraction, a couple of small stitches were required, and Squeeze was as good as new.
Most of his day was taken up with routine exams and inoculations, so he'd welcomed the novelty Squeeze had represented. Cassie and Doreen performed with their usual efficiency, keeping his appointments straight, while running the grooming side of the business.
Dean stayed busy and did his best not to dwell on thoughts of a tall, blonde horse breeder. His conscious mind did well, but his dreams proved beyond his control. Each night he succumbed to the sultry passions Scott woke in him. He'd wake from sleep, his cock hard and aching for relief. Like any normal red-blooded male, Dean masturbated. Since meeting Scott his needs took on epic proportions. He felt as if he were a teen again, filled with raging testosterone that needed release. It was disconcerting for a man of twenty seven to feel again as though a gentle breeze across his groin was enough to give him a hardon.
Several days later, the object of his unwilling desires stopped in at the office. Dean was just discussing his notes concerning the last patient with Cassie when Scott walked in. A slow smile spread across Scott's face as though he knew exactly what Dean had been dreaming.
"Morning Cassie, morning Dean, I've come to settle up my bill," Scott said, all the while his gaze lingering on Dean.
Cassie looked from one to the other and back again. Dean saw speculation dawn in her eyes, as a smile tugged at her lips. Mortified, he gave her a challenging look which Cassie answered with her most innocent expression.
"Let me look that up for you, Scott," she said giving him a wink.
"You two know each other?" Dean asked, struggling to keep his tone pleasant and not give into the need to growl.
Scott nodded. "Cassie and I grew up together. Her dad and mine were the best of friends so we've spent considerable time in each others company. Went to the same schools. You'll find a lot of that around here. It's a close-knit community."
Dean scowled. "Great. How's the colt?"
He couldn't believe how quickly things were spiraling out of control. One moment of letting down his guard, one split second lapse had led to this. He was almost surely out to Cassie and the reason for it was standing right in front of him. Anger and resentment began to build.
"Feisty as hell, but his momma's keeping him in line. He's sweet, a real spitfire," Scott replied, innocently unaware of Dean's struggle.
On the face of it Scott's comments were about the colt, but the last one was directed at Dean in such a way and with such a look in Scott's eyes, that the double meaning was clearly understood. His anger flared. Just who the fuck did this man think he was to walk into his place of business and treat it and him like some cheap pick-up in a singles bar? Heat filled his eyes and for a moment they sparkled with the force of his wrath. Dean caught himself and retreated into the ever present ice that was now such a familiar presence.
"If you'll excuse me, I've got some work to do. Cassie will take care of you," Dean replied coldly, meaningfully. He wanted Scott to understand that he'd not find release for any other needs here, especially not with him.
He quickly withdrew, strode down the hall and firmly closed the door behind him, leaving Cassie and Scott to stare at each other in consternation.

On the drive home, Scott's thoughts were filled with Dean. They had been ever since the moment he'd first laid eyes on him. He frowned as he contemplated Dean's behavior. There was something about the man, a vulnerability he strove to hide under a cold, prickly exterior. Not that Dean was always cold. It was only when Scott made any kind of move that the ice barrier came down. Scott was sure that Dean felt the same pull he did.
He'd had more than his share of casual, sexual encounters. Attraction between men was nothing new to him. There'd been no mistaking the look in Dean's eyes that night in the stall. For a moment his guard had been down. Scott had melted right into those warm brown eyes and felt the dawning temptation, the undisguised fascination and desire. As suddenly as it was there it was withdrawn, overshadowed by a split-second flash of panic before that blank, icy wall had crashed down between them.
Scott wasn't buying it. He wasn't buying the cold act or the disinterest. He'd seen the anger building in Dean's eyes a few moments ago. Only a man of passion could express such heat and only the object of his desire could stir it to such heights. Scott was determined to find his way in, to learn why Dean was afraid and to still the fears, to stir the desire until it exploded between them.
Scott wanted more than a casual encounter. He was tired of being alone. He knew that by now most people figured he was gay. There were a lot of pretty, eligible women in the area and for an unmarried man his age not to take advantage of it, well there was really only one reason why. Surprisingly most of the people of the small town of Middleton accepted the gays who lived within its sphere. Seldom had Scott encountered any prejudice against himself for his sexual preferences. Perhaps because he was discreet with his encounters, or maybe that at six feet four inches tall and two hundred and seventeen pounds, no one dared ridicule or question him.
Whatever the reason, he wasn't hiding who he was, especially not now, now that he was almost certain he'd found someone with whom he just might be able to build a life. "Yeah, yeah, I don't really know him yet," he agreed with his niggling doubter of a conscience. But it didn't take a rocket scientist to know, to feel, that there was something special here.
He remembered his first sight of Dean. When he'd answered the door, his brown eyes were slumberous and heavy from sleep, his gleaming hair in tangled disarray. He was barefoot, shirtless and the top two buttons of his jeans were unfastened.
Scott had held his breath for a moment as he struggled to maintain eye contact with Dean. To carry on a conversation instead of allowing his admiring gaze to wander Dean's firm chest and abs. His fingers had twitched at the sight of that soft, springy patch of hair that lay in the center of his bulging pectoral muscles. His imagination took him on a journey that began with his fingers tangling in that silky thatch and following the trail down with lips and tongue over Dean's ridged abs, flat stomach and below where it disappeared into the opening of his jeans.
"Damn," Scott murmured softly, shifting to accommodate a cock that had suddenly begun to pulse and thicken, finding inadequate room for expansion.
Retreating to less enticing thoughts, he wondered how he might get to know Dean better without sending him running. Something and somewhere casual so that Dean wouldn't be so wary of him. Perhaps he could get Cassie to let him know some places that Dean frequented. Surely he must eat out occasionally? Scott stepped on the gas, eager to get home and enlist Cassie's aid.

"Do you want Morall's Treasure or not, wolfswine?" Chantel demanded, her hand on her hip. She was losing patience fast. One thing about wolves, especially the alphas, they were nearly impossible to deal with. Usually it was their way or no way. Fortunately Chantel was just as stubborn. She had lost too much to the search for Morall's Treasure to let them destroy her chances of finding it now.
"I want it," Andre said. "We'll buy the ship."
"And share command?" Chantel added.
Crispin folded his arms across his chest and glowered at her. "Oh I'm sure that will work."
"It will if we keep ourselves under control," Chantel said, then added in her most patronizing tone. "Can you do that?"
Crispin snorted and dropped back into his chair.
Andre also sat and said, "What are we going to do about a crew?"
"The ship I have in mind can easily carry seventy-five. That means each of us can select twenty-four crewmen from our ships. Everything equal."
"Fine."
"Good."
Drawing a deep breath, Chantel released it slowly, her entire body tingling with anticipation. "Now we must bind this agreement."
"Agreed," the wolves replied in unison.
"I suggest we seal the pact in blood," Chantel said, her teeth aching to taste their delectable wolf's blood. Their scents had been driving her crazy with desire since they moment they'd met. It had been a long time since she'd teetered on the edge of control like this.
"I suggest sex," Crispin said, his voice husky and his eyes aglow with lust.
Chantel smiled. He was a wolf after her own heart.
"Why not both?" she purred, stood and tugged off her shirt. She tossed it aside, baring her full breasts with their dark brown nipples already stiff with need. She felt Andre's hot gaze upon her as she approached Crispin, sat on his lap and slipped her arms around his neck. Without hesitation he wrapped an arm around her waist, careful not to touch her with his silver claws, and buried his good hand in her hair. Andre paused, his back to them.
"If you intend to back out of our plans, be kind enough to leave the key which is still in your treacherous hand," Crispin said.
Andre's jaw tightened and he turned on his heel, glaring at them.
"You agreed to the partnership," Crispin stated.
"I agreed to seek Morall's Treasure."
"There's another treasure right here," Crispin said, his violet gaze fixed on Chantel. "I know you want this as much as we do, Andre. I can smell your desire."
Chantel pushed away from Crispin and approached Andre, her hands languidly stroking her breasts. His gaze followed her fingertips along the full, dark mounds and he licked his lips then met her gaze. The passion in his eye was almost frightening in its intensity.
"If you're really against sealing our pact with sex, you don't have to—" Before Chantel could finish speaking, Andre grasped her in a crushing embrace and covered her mouth in a penetrating kiss. Every thrust of his tongue seem to stoke the heat in her pussy.

KH: I'm a huge fan of the tortured hero and you are a master at writing great tortured heroes-- Kamerone Cree from BloodWind and Conar McGregor from the WindLegends Saga immediately come to mind. What is it that draws you toward such characters and do you have a favorite tortured hero from your books?
CBC: I think it is the mothering instinct within me. You want to soothe the pain, make it all better. It doesn’t matter that you are the one creating the pain for these poor heroes. What is important is that you be there to take care of it, to hold his head as he cries, to kiss him and tell him it will be all right. My favorite is Kamerone since he was the first of my Reapers whom I created. I put that poor baby through hell but he forgave me. Even now he’s sitting on the loveseat here in my office shaking his dark head at me, that sweet little grin completely transforming his stern face. KH: You currently write for Ellora's Cave and New Concepts publishing. Would you tell us about your recent/upcoming releases?
CBC:I have three books coming out this month: WindLegends Saga 5: WindReaper from NCP, WesternWind 3: Prime Reaper from EC, and Dreams of the Oasis: 4 from EC. I also have the fourth short story in the Seasonal Winds series…Winter Wind…coming out from NCP. So far next year I have three novels coming out from Ellora’s Cave: Hunger’s Harmattan, a dark fantasy/SF story with my signature Reapers and Amazeens, Journey of the Wind which is part of the Torrid Tarot series, and Tears of the Reaper, the fourth novel in the WesternWind series of post apocalyptic vampire westerns written for Scottish actor Gerard Butler as well as a short story in one of the EC anthologies. I have two other novels earmarked for EC but I haven’t subbed them, yet. The last five books of the WindLegends Saga ten-volume series will be coming out from NCP along with the two prequels to that series, WindFall and WindChance. I also have several short stories coming out with NCP in 2007 and hopefully five or six more full-length novels…including NightWind if they accept it.
KH: I noticed you also have some upcoming stories at Samhain Publishing. Would you tell us about those?
CBC: I have The WyndMaster Trilogy beginning with The WyndMaster’s Lady and then The WyndMaster’s Son. The third book is tentatively titled The WyndMaster’s Apprentice. They are swordplay books heavy on erotic romance and swashbuckling adventure. They have the tortured hero…of course…but they also have very strong, feisty heroines who are take-charge women. They don’t leave all the fighting to the guys and when it’s necessary, they go after the bad guys, themselves. The first book is due out in February 2007 and the second in July 2007 so I imagine the third will be a close to Christmas release. Right now I’m working on a book titled WyndSheer…a Celtic myth novel…that I plan to sub to SP. KH: To you what makes a great romance hero?
CBC: A man who isn’t afraid to cry. A man who is strong and powerful but who can be weak, driven to his knees but not be broken by it. A man who is handsome and tall and muscular but who isn’t so infatuated with his own appearance that he forgets the heroine is beside him. He must be loyal, have a sense of humor, and be completely pitiless if the need arises. He is a man you don’t mess with unless you want to be messed with in return. Above all else, he loves the woman in his life more than the very air he breathes and is willing to do what it takes to keep her. In other words, he’s most likely a Reaper. ;)
KH: How did you come up with the wind theme to tie together your work?
CBC: I am a Gemini, an air sign, and I’ve always had a great affection for the way the wind feels when it plays across my face. I like the sound of it, the way it sweeps things clean. I like that you can hear it, see its effects but you can never see *it*. It is a phantom and that intrigues me. When I began looking for a title for my first novel, Keeper of the Wind, it just fell into place. I wanted something my readers could easily identify with me and Wind became my calling card. I keep joking that I’m going to write a really sassy comedy with truly bizarre characters. The title would be…BreakWind. KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
CBC: It would be Kamerone Cree from the DemonWind Trilogy. That man just makes me melt whenever I think about him. He’s strong and ruthless and handsome and a badass. Having him in your corner would be like having an entire army because you know he’s going to do whatever it takes to protect you.
