GUEST AUTHOR Lacey Savage

KH: When creating a story, what usually comes first for you, the characters or the plot?

LS: It depends on the story. The idea usually forms from nothing more than a random thought. It may be a brief image of a character I just have to get to know better (like Maelan in OCEANBOUND, or a situation (what if a would-be thief steals a van carrying corpses in the back? - GRAVE PLEASURES.

KH: What is your favorite sub-genre of romance?

LS: Fantasy, definitely. And that's a broad category for me, since I define everything from elves, dwarves and magic, to vampires and werewolves as 'fantasy'. And of course, the more erotic, the better. :)

KH: Would you tell us about your latest release?

LS: Absolutely! My most recent release is OCEANBOUND, a fantasy erotic romance available at AmberQuill Press. It's the passionate story of a merman who falls in love with his captor's daughter. I'm especially thrilled to announce that OCEANBOUND has received a CAPA nomination from The Romance Studio in the Best Erotic Fantasy Romance category!

KH: Would you tell us about your upcoming projects?

LS: align="left" I'm especially thrilled to note that my first vampire erotica, GRAVE PLEASURES, is scheduled for release in late January from AmberQuill Press. It tells the story of a hot vampire hero, a feisty heroine, and their struggle to battle an undead threat while fighting their feelings for each other.

In May, AmberQuill Press will release my first contemporary novella, LIKE A VIRGIN, scheduled as part of the "Heart Songs" AmberPax Collection. It's my first attempt at contemporary romance, and with a title like that, I'm more than a little nervous about reader response. :)

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

LS: Definitely Maelan, my merman hero in OCEANBOUND. I initially wanted to write him as a dark, tortured hero, and I was apprehensive about his ability to still come off as strong enough to please readers. As I wrote the book, he really took on a life of his own, often coming up with witty remarks and a sexy, demanding attitude that had me hurrying to type as fast as I could.

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

LS: I don't need an alpha hero to be happy. I simply need a hero I can relate to, a man who feels real enough to step out of the pages of a book and into my living room. I don't care if he's a vampire, werewolf, or elf. If I believe he's real enough to sweep the heroine off her feet, then he's real enough to me, too, and I'll fall in love right along with her. He should be strong without being a bully, sensitive without being a wimp, and loyal. Always loyal.

KH: How about what makes a great romance heroine?

LS: Beautiful, sexy, intelligent women are my favorite types of romance heroines. I want them to lead fabulous lifestyles even without a man in their life. I want them to be exactly what I wish to be, especially on days when real life, cooking, cleaning and laundry get the better of me.

KH: Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

LS: I do! Readers can find my website at http://www.laceysavage.com, and can contact me at laceysavage@rogers.com. I'd also like to invite everyone interested in learning more about me and my books to join my newsletter: KH: Thank you, Lacey!

LS: Thanks for having me, Kate! :)

EXCEPRT FROM GRAVE PLEASURES By: Lacey Savage

Genre: Vampire Erotic Romance Length: Novella

How do you fight an undead threat? With another kind of undead, of course.

It was a simple job, really. All Ash O’Reilly has to do is get in, swipe a crucifix, and get out. But despite the fact that she even has a key to the place, the situation spirals out of control when the alarms go off, the police shows up, and she’s forced to seize a van and flee the scene.

Breaking and entering isn’t Ash’s style. Stealing cars, even less so. And she definitely doesn’t expect to be hauling corpses in the back of the van. Especially ones that come alive and try to kill her.

A vampire protector, Beau L. Hereaux strives on rescuing the damsel in distress. Rescuing Ash, however, unearths more than he bargained for. A zombie army sows terror across Boston’s quiet streets, placing mortals and vampires both at risk.

Can Ash and Beau uncover the source of the uprising and stop it before it’s too late?

Excerpt:

The light inside the vehicle was on, and three shapes were clearly outlined through the side windows. Beau only had a few seconds to make sense of the images, but the scene imprinted itself on his brain even as the van passed out of sight.

He’d seen the woman struggle with another figure, while at least one more watched. With one last longing look at the woman’s pale skin, he took off at a speed no mortal could match. He leapt over the chain enclosure surrounding the lot and bolted down the street, following the waning rasp of the overworked engine.

He could make out its taillights at the end of the road, increasing in size as he approached. The crash came suddenly and with a deafening burst of sound, the impact of the metal against the dumpster drowning out the thin wail of a siren in the distance.

The van idled, its tailpipe still streaming noxious black smoke. Beau neared it and was relieved to notice the impact had only dented the bumper and the front of the car, the damage falling short of reaching the driver’s seat. Still, he could make out the unmistakable trail of blood along the side window, and he pulled the door open quickly to assess the damage.

A woman leaned against the door. It was her head that left that trail of blood on the window, and he hurried to settle her back against the seat. The scent of fresh blood made his mouth water, and he dug his fingernails into his palms to keep from claiming her.

Taking advantage of wounded women wasn’t his style. He wanted them willing when he fed, eager for him. And this woman looked in no position to consent.

She sure looked beautiful, though. Her lightly tanned skin provided the perfect backdrop for the enticing trail of blood curling away from her forehead, down her cheeks and disappearing into her blouse. Short, spiky dark brown hair framed her face, and full pink lips slightly parted in surprise hinted at sensual delights.

He reached out to touch her on impulse, with no plan or thought as to where this would lead. His hand barely brushed against her velvety cheek when the back doors slid open and the stench of rotting flesh permeated the air.

Beau stepped back from the van in time to deflect a determined fist from colliding with his face. He ducked at the last moment, then spun and grabbed the man’s wrist and twisted it behind him. Only, the skin felt clammy, cold, and that overwhelming scent of rot made him gag.

This isn’t a man.

Another arm twisted around Beau’s throat and pulled him back from his original assailant. This creature was stronger, but still no match for Beau’s abilities. He freed himself easily from the unwelcome grip and landed a well-placed elbow in the creature’s middle, knocking it off its feet.

A swift kick sent the first one flying through the air, to land with another loud crash on top of the dumpster. The body slid swiftly down into the garbage heap, and Beau turned back to the one laying on the ground. It remained still, its crimson eyes glassy and unblinking. Beau nudged the creature with the tip of his boot in disgust.

He’d have to take it back to the Clan and have it assessed at the lab. Zombies hadn’t risen in centuries. He couldn’t be certain this unfortunate man was a corpse risen from the grave, but his ashy, grey complexion and cold skin gave credence to Beau’s theory.

And the smell! Beau fought back the bile rising in his throat and leaned down over the lifeless form on the ground. His head had been smashed against the pavement, and his jaw hung slackly against his chest.

Beau opened his mouth and ran a finger absentmindedly over one of his fangs, testing its sharpness as he considered the body before him.

“Don’t move.”

The voice came from behind him, feminine and confident. Despite the order, Beau rose and turned to face her.

“I said, don’t move.” This time, panic broke through her composure. Her breath steamed in the cold air.

She was even more beautiful now, with her full lips narrowed into an angry line, and a blush tinting her cheeks. He could see her eyes for the first time, dark and mysterious, the glint of anger making them sparkle in the harsh glare of the streetlights. The blood had began to dry on her cheek and her disheveled hair gave her the appearance of a wild warrior woman.

Or a vampire slayer.

In one hand, she held a golden crucifix pointed at his heart.

NEXT MONTH'S GUEST AUTHOR: Sheri Gilmore

EXCERPT FROM Fantasy Flames 1: Cavern Dancer

“I have one last request.”

“What?”

Grasping her upper arms, he tugged her close to his chest. Gilana’s entire body tingled and her head spun at the familiar hardness and warmth of his body against hers.

“That you allow us to pick up where we left off,” he whispered against her lips.

Nodding, she slipped her arms around his neck as he covered her mouth with a kiss deeper than the sea itself.

Each stroke of his tongue against hers seemed directly connected to her clit. It throbbed and ached with all the unfulfilled need of the past two years. She buried her hands in his hair, loving its soft, thick texture sliding between her fingers.

Jehf broke the kiss only to trace the shape of her ear with his tongue. He nibbled the lobe and said in a husky whisper, “I’ve dreamed of this moment for so long. Do you have any idea how much I’ve missed you?”

“Yes, oh yes,” she breathed, clinging to him tightly as he kissed along the side of her neck. Though they had only known each other over the course of a week, an unbreakable bond had been forged between them. “I don’t know why, but I’ve never felt as close to any man as I do to you.”

“My people have a belief that when two souls are meant to be together, they recognize one another instantly. That’s why arranged marriages are not allowed among Cavern Dancers.”

“Really? I didn’t. . .know. . .that.” Gilana’s voice drifted as his deft fingers unfastened the ties on the front of her shift and his hands parted the fabric so that he could kiss her bare breasts.

GUEST AUTHOR SHERI GILMORE

KH: What inspires your ideas for characters?

SG: Usually, people I meet in real life, but sometimes I see certain people/ideas on TV that trigger a story. Also, some of my best stories have been dreams I've had. I wake and the dream is 'real' - color, dialogue, characters, etc. That's when I know to get up and start typing.

KH: What do you like best about writing erotic romance?

SG: I can let my imagination just 'take over'. I've always been frustrated with the romance novels that were too 'vanilla'. To me, women I knew just didn't act so prim and proper when it came down to sex and romance - I didn't. They knew what they wanted and went after it.

KH: Would you tell us about your latest release?

SG: Latest release is 'Candy for Her Soul' in the HARD CANDY Anthology through Loose Id, LLC. I'm ecstatic to be writing with Angela Knight and Morgan Hawke, two 'big names' in erotic-romance. Basically, it's a Valentine's story with a dark twist - the heroine has always been in love with one man, but secretly tormented with lust for another. She's offered two pieces of Valentine's candy by a mysterious stranger, who makes her an 'offer she can't refuse'! All she has to do is give him her soul. Lots of hot, steamy sex with m/m/f encounters and m/m encounters along with your m/f action too. I love the occult, so there's that as well.

KH: Would you tell us about your upcoming projects?

SG: I'm glad you asked. I'm very excited about an upcoming project for Loose Id due out in early Spring called Maslow's Needs. As I said earlier, I love the occult. This is a vampyre tale, but not your typical 'been dead a thousand years'. I've been working with Konstantinos (www.konstantinos.com) in New York City on this project. He is an author of the occult and his book Vampires: The Occult Truth aided greatly in my research. This book is about 'real' vampyres in the Goth community of New York City. My story is definitely dark, but highly erotic! I'd also like to mention John Coughlin, 'The Dark Wyccan', of New York for his help with occult data and his Vampire Personals website (www.vampirepersonals.com). These two guys were also the models for the cover with Konstantinos's face and John's fingernails!! Thanks guys!

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

SG: That's hard, because I fall in love with all my heroes! But, I'd have to say Luke. He made an appearance as the 'bad guy' in 'Candy for Her Soul', but will have his own story in a few months in Cool-Hand Luke. Again, this is an Erotic/Occult-Paranormal Romance. This time I will be focusing more on witchcraft and demonology. I love those 'bad boys'!

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

SG: Well, he's got to be 'bad', but vulnerable in some way. He's experienced with women and sex, but he's either never been in love, or he's been burned by love. So, he's cynical, but somewhere deep down he's looking for the right woman to come along and end his loneliness. You'll see him being nice to the 'underdogs of society' - the people no one cares about, because he feels he's an 'underdog' too. I've always rooted for the underdogs instead of the person/team everyone else thought was the best. They seem to have more 'character/honesty/loyalty' to them. A great romance hero is like a stray dog - tough and fearless on the outside, but scared and lonely on the inside. They say the best pet is a stray! Once you show them love and offer them food and a safe, dry place to lay their head - you've got their loyalty forever.

KH: How about what makes a great romance heroine?

SG: Well, she cannot be stupid! The girl has got to think for herself. Yes, the hero confuses her because she runs across him at a time in her life when she's usually got everything going for her, then 'bam' here he is. And, she thinks "Oh, Hell, what am I going to do with him?" I like my ladies tough, too. Maybe not 'Buffy', but they have to know how to take care of themselves and they have to know what they want sexually. They can't be afraid to go and get what they need in their lives. This doesn't mean she can't be feminine, though. We're female - use what gifts we were given!!! My girls know when to wear lipstick, when to bat those eyelashes, and when to kick ass.

KH: Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

SG: http://www.sherisecrets.com

CANDY FOR HER SOUL, HARD CANDY Anthology by Sheri Gilmore
Editor: Maryam Salim
ISBN# 1-59632-066-4
Price: $6.99
Publisher: Loose ID, LLC (http://www.loose-id.com)

Lifting her hands to the moonlit night, she whispered the incantation she’d designed years before. “Moonlight that shines on me, hear my wish and grant my needs.”

She held her stance for a few minutes, but couldn’t stop the yawn that claimed her. A faint breeze lifted the hair around her shoulders and she closed her eyes to let her meditative trance take her. In the distance, she heard the sounds of the night -- cars on the Biloxi bridge, the train crossing two streets over, dogs barking into the night air, and someone breathing.

Her eyes opened with a snap and she whirled around. A hand covered her mouth when she would have screamed. Her heart pounded against her chest and she kicked out with her bare foot.

He laughed. “Nice try, sweets.” The raspy voice whispering in her ear sounded familiar. He pulled her closer and she realized he was as naked as she. “That’s right, don’t fight. You’ll only get hurt trying to resist me.”

A warm, wet tongue trailed down her cheek. When he reached her neck, his lips joined his tongue in a soft sucking motion against the vein that throbbed in fear and ... something else. While her mind screamed “run,” her body screamed “give in.” Desire wound its way down her neck, across her breasts, and settled in her groin. She pressed her thighs together to fight the need that swamped her senses.

He released her neck to trail back to her ear. “Hmm, you taste as good as I imagined.” The arm around her waist loosened. “Sweeter than that candy I offered you when you were seventeen.”

His hand wandered over her body. First he slid his fingers up to pinch her nipple between his forefinger and thumb, then he feathered down to twirl a finger around the curve of her navel. “You’ve grown up quite nicely. No wonder he wants you.”

Natalie moaned and shifted her hips. Whether in pleasure or an attempt to break free, she didn’t know. The more he touched her, the more her cunt grew wet and throbbed.

He laughed, the warmth of his breath puffing small clouds of mist into the cold air. His hand slipped further south and hesitated above her pubis.

The anticipation became a physical pain. Through the pressure of his fingers, she muttered, “Come on.”

He did. Long, hot fingers combed through her pussy hair to reach their destination. When he entered her cunt, he released the hand over her mouth and she heard their moans of pleasure blend together. The familiar ache grew so acute she thought she would fall, but his arms held her tight against his body. The outline of his cock pressed into her back, and she thought of Nico.

“Don’t think of him.” He plunged his fingers deeper. “Not yet. Think of me and the pleasure I’m giving you.”

Fantasy and reality blurred together, and Natalie couldn’t be sure if she were dreaming or actually letting a complete stranger take control of her body. But ... he wasn’t a stranger. She’d seen him before. The haze of desire swamped her senses.

She didn’t care. Between the cold of the night and the heat of his fingers and lips, she lost all touch with reality. One minute they were standing with him behind her, his fingers deep within her body; the next moment he stood before her in the cold night air.

He reached past her head and produced a long-stemmed rose with petals so red they looked black in the moonlight.

“It’s beautiful.” Her voice sounded like she spoke inside a tunnel.

“Like you, my dear.” He trailed the bud across her shoulders and between her breasts.

“I’m not beautiful.”

“Oh, but you are.” He smiled. His teeth flashed white in the pale light. “I know at least three males who think so.” The bud circled her breast. “Myself, Nico, and David.”

“Who are you?”

"I’m the answer to yours and another’s prayers.”

She shook her head. “An angel?”

He laughed and the black eyebrow rose. “Not the last time I looked in the mirror.”

“You’re ... the devil?”

EXCERPT FROM DANGEROUS CRAVINGS 1: THE RED CURTAIN BY KATE HILL

“Usually I hate being like everybody else, but right now I couldn’t care less. I just want you.” Without hesitation, he swept her into his arms. To his new vampiric body, she weighed nothing at all. He could have probably carried ten of her—and fucked each and every one with scarcely a blink.

His first impulse had been to carry her to the bed, then he thought better of it. Fucking her against the wall was much more appealing than doing it on a boring old bed.

He carried her across the room, kissing her. Clinging to his neck, she scraped her tongue against one of his fangs. Even that slight taste of her blood made him gasp. His cock felt ready to explode, yet somehow he possessed a degree of control he had never experienced as a human.

He placed her on the ground, her back against the wall and grasped her wrists, pinning them above her head.

Tugging against his grip, she smiled coquettishly.

“Try harder,” he whispered against her ear.

He sensed the thrill coursing through her and heard her thoughts.

I love this kind of game.

He smiled slightly and thought. So do I.

You’re a shockingly good telepath. Woodrow is going to love training with you.

Looking forward to it, but right now I don’t want to think about Woodrow. I just want you.

Covering her mouth with his, he continued holding her wrists. She pulled harder in a futile attempt to free herself. Impossible. His strength far surpassed hers. The more she struggled, the more aroused she seemed to become. However he also sensed her complete trust in him. This was a wonderful game, but he could never imagine forcing her against her will, nor did he believe she would enjoy such abuse. But for now. . .

“Oh!” she cried when he released her hands and bent his knees so that his mouth could tease her nipple.

He swirled his tongue around it, then sucked hard. Ever so slightly, he scraped the peak with one of his fangs. A shiver tore through her and she clung to his head, pressing him closer.

“Yes, oh, yes. Bite it!”

He did as she asked and nipped her breast. Again, a bit of her blood flowed into his mouth, flooding him with desire. Closing his eyes, he nipped and lapped, nipped and lapped, over and over, until her legs practically collapsed. He caught her before she sank to the ground and again pinned her wrists above her head. This time when he bent his knees it was to slide his steely cock inch by inch into her drenched pussy.

“Ash, oh, baby,” she gasped as he began moving inside her.

The growl that erupted from his throat took him a bit by surprise. The sound was by no means human, but it seemed the most natural way to express the emotions rolling through him.

Growling again, he nuzzled her neck and licked the soft flesh. His tongue traced a throbbing artery. Tavia moaned, her hips thrusting in time with his. He released her hands only to grasp her buttocks and lift her higher. Wrapping her legs around his waist, she clung to him tightly, licking his shoulder.

Ash panted, his heart hammering. The taste of her blood began fading from his mouth, but he couldn’t let that happen. Not now. Not when he was starving for her.

GUEST AUTHOR CYNNARA TREGARTH

KH: "The Mark of the Blood," the first book in your Marauders series, introduces nine intriguing brothers. Do you have a tentative release date for the next book in the series?

CT: Call of the Wylde, the second book was just released in time for the Spring Equinox by Sister O, the Triskelion erotic romance imprint. The third book, Anamchara is hopeful for this summertime.

KH: Would you tell us about your latest release?

CT: Which one? LOL Actually, I was lucky and unlucky of having 3 releases back to back, but the one most people know about are Jack's Back and Call of the Wylde. Jack's Back deals with a forensic anthropologist and Metro Police detective working together to find out if a killer is working from the listing of Jack the Ripper or if he truly is Jack the Ripper.

In Call of the Wylde, Owain Maraigh, Niam's twin, and Colette Wylde team up to find the history of vampires and how to turn a vampire back into human. What they don't expect is that The Morrigan doesn't want either of them searching for the answers--with good reason.

KH: Would you tell us about your upcoming projects?

CT: There are many, but the three most important ones I'm working on are the third Marauder book- Anamchara- which is Donal's story, Goddess Hunted- a woman on the run from the goddess she served and a man who doesn't want to admit the gods are real, but does want to honour warrior women from the past during a Renaissance Festival. The third book is one requested for review by a print publisher- a female fantasy novel called Areta's Blood. There's a fourth book, but I'm not sure where I might submit it. It's the closest to my heart right now and will prolly take the rest of this year to finish while doing the deadline projects.

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

CT: *thinks* This could be tough. There are many. But the one I want to meet most would be Ephram. He's a book I'm working on when I get time. It's the closest I've come to wishing I could bring a character to life. The only other one is Miach. Oh the wicked things to do with that Druid!

KH: What inspires the characters and plotlines you create?

CT: Honestly, they come to me with their stories. It's like being presented with an exclusive movie feature that no one else can see. What normally gets them to come out of their shells could be a news report, talking to a gorgeous friend of mine about history, or even watching my favourite cartoon. Then the character and plot flows. For the first two Marauder books, Niam and Owain came to me and said, "Here it is-- deal with it."

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

CT: A strong man who's not afraid of admitting when he's wrong. Knowing he can do all the right things, but sometimes the best thing he can do is be at his woman's side and support her in how she wants to handle something. If he's intelligent, has a sense of humour, and is willing to make changes-- then he's a hero for all time in my book.

KH: What is your favorite romance subgenre to read?

CT: Paranormal. Not only do I write it, I read it. The hotter the better too. Vampires, shape shifters, Fey, witches, merpeople, centaurs-- you name it, I want to read it. To me paranormal is the epitome of "What if" and "If it could be anything..." that most of us have always dreamed about. It's why I love writing in it and teaching others about writing paranormal romance. It's so much fun!

KH: Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

CT: My website is http://www.cynnara.com and readers can email me at cynnara@cynnara.com. I might be a day or so behind in responding, but I do respond. Promise!

KH: Thank you, Cynnara!

Excerpt from CALL OF THE WYLDE by Cynnara Tregarth

Now he would let her feel exactly what she did to him. Carefully readjusting himself, as just the thought of possessing her made him hard, Owain opened the door and noticed that something had changed in the living room. Finding the newly added item, his left brow lifted with amusement as the scent of challenge filtered into his brain. The lacy bra had been on top of a journal dealing with human sexuality. He got the hint. His grin became more feral, his canines lengthening as lust filled his body.

As he stepped towards the hallway, he saw a pile of her clothing and something he hadn't thought to see -- one of her earrings. It was wet to the touch and he knew it wasn't from water or her tears. He smelled the wetness and growled recognizing the scent and knowing where it came from.

"Mine, you're mine. You hear me, Colette?"

"Come and get me, if you can," she whispered from everywhere. She too possessed the ability of magick, though not to his level. As Star Trek's Spock would say, "Fascinating."

Owain said nothing, letting his vampire senses enhance her words so he could triangulate where she was. She was no longer in his bedroom or he would've known. His fingers caressed her earring, letting her smell be engraved in his soul. This woman was something more than she seemed. According to his brother, she was meant for him. Nevertheless, Morrigu is a capricious goddess at times and could play games. He wouldn't just accept this without more proof.

Then he heard it, the telltale noise of her moving in a room. He quickly and silently opened the door and stepped into the darkened room. "Mine. And to think you're already naked for me, Colette."

His voice came out a hungry growl. He could sense her warmth, her heat. His hand shot out, grabbing something warm and soft. His other arm snaked around, capturing Colette in his embrace. His fingers kneaded her breast as her nipple peaked under his touch. She let out a slight whimper as he teased the tip without relieving the building pressure.

His mouth captured hers; his tongue questing the source of the sweet taste he knew was hers alone. His hands cupped her breasts and fondled them. It had been so long since he allowed himself this pleasure. Yet, there was something different and deep inside them both and they both knew it. It would be damn difficult going back after this night, if it was even possible.

EXCERPT FROM JOLENE'S POOKA BY KATE HILL

“Close your eyes,” he ordered.

For some reason, she obeyed. She gasped, feeling as if she was floating on air.

When she opened her eyes, she was no longer on the stallion’s back, but in the arms of an absolutely gorgeous black-haired, green-eyed man. His chiseled face was shadowed with a hint of stubble. The neck she clung to was powerful and the arms cradling her were thickly-muscled.

Hesitantly, she slipped a hand across his bare chest, loving its warmth and the sensation of hair against her palm.

“Fallon said if I acknowledged you, you’d be bored with me and leave.”

“Many of my kind once played such games, but that was never my way. Friends and lovers I keep for life.”

“Lovers?”

He nodded, his penetrating eyes fixed on hers. The rise and fall of his chest as he breathed comforted her, yet at the same time incited her passion.

Good sense told her she should be absolutely terrified. She was in the presence of a creature that should not exist. He had just changed from beast to man in a blink. Things like that simply didn’t happen.

“You’re trembling,” he said. “Are you cold?”

“Aren’t you?”

“We’ll soon be warm.”

He carried her to the castle and into a bedchamber. In spite of the dilapidated state of the rest of the place, the room was clean and beautifully furnished, from the canopied bed to the rug in front of the huge fireplace where flames crackled and leapt.

“What is this place?”

“It was my home once. Every autumn my brothers and I would haunt this land, feasting on crops and tempting maidens. I can still taste the sweetness of both.” He closed his eyes for a moment, an impassioned look sweeping his handsome features. “But that was long ago. The world has changed much since then. Sometimes, if I think hard, I can still catch the scent of the villagers’ fires. I can hear their voices and see their lanterns aglow with candlelight. But those are just memories. I can‘t truly touch them, as I‘m touching you now.”

He placed her on her feet in front of the fire and cupped her chin in his hand, tilting her face up to his. His hand moved to her cheek. Caressing it gently, he leaned forward the slightest bit and brushed a kiss across her forehead. His lips were moist and soft, yet at the same time firm. She could just imagine how good they would feel against hers.

“Will you share yourself with me, woman?” he asked close to her ear, his warm breath caressing her neck. “Will you let me pleasure your body and mingle your spirit with mine? Give me a taste of what I once had.”

“In return for introducing you to the modern world?”

“It’s long past time for me. What do they say? Out with the old and in with the new.”

Hi, Everyone!

I apologize for the extreme lateness of the April issue. Rather than send out two issues close together, I've combined the April and May issues into this one.

This issue's guest authors are Michelle Pillow and Mandy M. Roth whose recent release "Pleasure Cruise" is available from Ellora's Cave. To learn more about Michelle and Mandy, take a look at their interview below.

I'm very happy to announce several new releases this month:

Erotic vampire romance, Disdain, is book two of the Dangerous Cravings series. This vampire was one of my favorites to write about, even if he was one of my "problem children." :-)

Rediscovering Thor, a paranormal romance, is my first book with LTD Books. I'm thrilled to say that Rediscovering Thor is a recommended read this month at Fallen Angel Reviews.

The Chieftain's Bride, a historical romance, is my first book with New Concepts Publishing. This book is a re-release and inspired a sequel which I'm preparing to submit, so please keep your fingers crossed along with me!

Last, my erotic short story "To Ride Him Home" has been included in the Villains and Vixens anthology recently released by Renaissance E Books.

Remember to check out the contest section below. This month's winner will receive several prizes for the combined April/May drawing.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to drop me an email at katehill@sprintmail.com or katehill2@yahoo.com

Have a great month!

GUEST AUTHORS MICHELLE PILLOW AND MANDY M ROTH

KH: Would you tell us about your new release "Pleasure Cruise?"

MP:It's a lighthearted book that we did for fun as a nice break from our"darker" works. So far it's gotten many 5 star reviews and was a #1 Topseller at Amazon. We're amazed by the success and VERY happy.

MR: It was a great departure from our norm. We had a lot of fun writing it. Well, we always have fun writing hunky men.

KH: Did you find collaborating more difficult than working alone and will you be writing any future books together?

MP:We love writing together. We have many ideas floating in our heads for joint projects. Right now we're having fun with our new futuristic series for EC, Red Light Specialists.

MR: We clicked instantly. It's amazing how fluid it all is considering there's two people working on it. We've done other works together and co-author Raven chapters. I believe we were two or three chapters into the Raven when we figured out that we not only could write easily together but have a blast doing it.

KH: Would you tell us about your upcoming projects?

MP:Red Light Specialists focuses on three super sexy agents with even sexier missions. They're a lot of fun, even if Mandy 'grades' my notetaking abilities--she is so ANAL. Yep, I said it. ANAL. Hee hee. Anal. *looking at Mandy, knowing 'butthead' is giggling with beavis* Oh, and while we're on the subject of Mandy being mean, she makes fun of my maps. Was there a question here?

MR: *I'm ignoring her* RLS is a mix of futuristic/paranormal/ and just about anything else we can toss into the mix. *tossing Michelle in mix now* Hey, where's everyone going?

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

MP: One that Mandy couldn't write on, lol. She'd do mean things to me.

MR: I feel a beheading coming on. Umm, sorry, back to the question. I'd want to meet Valerie from The Valkyrie.

KH: What inspires the characters and plotlines you create?

MP: Mandy gets drunk I grab a pin. We go from there, lol.

MR: Sadly, that's very close to the truth. LOL. We are so bizarre that seeing a squashed bug on the ground can launch an entire series. I'd go into more detail but I'd scare off readers. :)

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

MP: ALPHA ALPHA ALPHA and um...let's see, supernatural powers are good too.

MR: I need to relate to him in some way. If I can't understand why he is the way he is, I don't want him. I love knowing there's more to him. It doesn't really matter what that more is--just that its there.

KH: How about what makes a great romance heroine?

MP:Me! *looking around* did I say that out loud again? I meant, um, you know, someone sweet and stuff. And uh, likeable...

MR: Someone who can stand on her own two feet. She can't be afraid to get her hands dirty or in many of my books bloody. Kicking ass is a must. Most importantly, she needs to have some serious vulnerabilities under all that steely outer shell.

MP: Ooh, good answer. Can I take hers?

KH: Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

Michelle - www.michellepillow.com

Mandy - www.mandyroth.com

KH: Thank you, Michelle and Mandy!

EXCERPT FROM SOOTHSAYER

Ivana’s hands slid up Vlas Sascha Evgenyl’s chest before locking around his neck. Her lips devoured his in an unexpected kiss, and he prayed he wasn’t so drunk that he wouldn’t remember this moment when he woke the next morning. An even worse thought struck him. What if he was so intoxicated that he was imagining her here in his chamber, unfastening the ties on the front of his shirt?

Her warm, wet tongue stroked his and all his drunken doubts faded as passion cradled him in its velvet embrace. Wrapping his arms around her, he closed his eyes and savored her taste and scent. His erection, pressed intimately between their bodies, swelled and ached.

He’d loved her since he was eighteen years old, but knew he hadn’t a chance with a woman like her.

Throughout his life, especially during the war, he had released sexual tension with women. Still, whenever he closed his eyes and thrust his cock into his partner’s body, he imagined her. Perhaps it was his part in Ori Paz’s winning the war that had nabbed her attention enough to make love with him now. Power such as he wielded was often more tempting than a handsome face or esteemed family class. Such power wasn’t given by the gods, but earned. He had paid for it in blood, his own as well as others. Was it worth it, even if he did have Ivana?

“What’s wrong?” she murmured against his lips.

“You’re certain I’m what you want?” The words were ripped from his soul. He certainly didn’t wish to discourage her, yet he had to be sure.

“Don’t talk, Vlas. Just kiss me. Touch me. Please.”

He was either too drunk to argue or too worried that she would change her mind, so he did what she asked and swept her into his arms.

Fire blazed in the nearby hearth. Its heat lashed his face as he knelt and placed Ivana on the thick black carpet in front of the flames. Gazing at him with her slanted green eyes, she offered the slightest smile. Her fingertips caressed his cheek and swept down his throat while Vlas unbuttoned the front of her burgundy velvet gown. He drew a sharp breath at the vision of her bare breasts, so full and creamy, with delicate mauve tips. By the Ice Goddess, her body was even more beautiful than he had imagined.

He finished undressing her. When she lay naked on the rug, he sat back on his heels and stared. Trembling slightly, his hand hovered over her belly, then rested gently on her soft mound. She was so warm and soft. So lovely. It must be a dream or a drunken illusion. There was no way that after all these years, she was giving herself to him.

“Please, I want to feel you.” She sat up and knelt in front of him, tugging at his cloak. He shrugged off the heavy wool garment and raised his arms so that she could remove his shirt.

With a feral groan, he wrapped his arms around her so that their bare torsos were pressed close. Her breasts flattened against his chest, the nipples hardening on contact with his hair-roughened flesh. Her moist lips rested against the side of his neck and her fingers entangled in his hair. By the way she squirmed against him and uttered soft little moans of passion, he knew that she desired him as much as he desired her. That realization sent waves of increased passion rippling through him. His cock felt ready to burst with need, so he forced himself to draw several calming breaths. Between all the wine he’d drunk and the force of his desire, he was liable to go off like a novice and ruin the moment before it began.

Mastering himself, he gently pushed her onto her back and discarded the remainder of his clothes. He stretched out beside her, leaning on his elbow, his head propped on his hand. Again those green eyes glistening with emotion bewitched him. He stroked wisps of hair from her face, then swept his hand down her ribs to her hip. She was fleshy in all the right places. He would have closed his eyes in pleasure as his palm traveled over the soft curve of her belly, but he didn’t want to miss seeing her. He stroked her inner thighs, loving the smoothness of their pale flesh.

Suddenly he needed to taste her. Without hesitation, he slid down the rug and guided her legs over his shoulders.

EXCERPT FROM THE CHIEFTAIN'S BRIDE

Wyborn the Indomitable stood on the bow of his ship and squinted toward the misty shoreline. He hadn't been to Northumbria since he was a boy on a raid with his father. It had been his first true fight, the first time he'd sliced flesh with his blade, the first time he'd felt his blood run hot and free from a serious wound. Wyborn had been a tall, strong youth who appeared older than his twelve years. Both he and his father had eagerly awaited the battle. What a disappointment it had been when Wyborn's chest had been sliced halfway through the fight. He scarcely made it back to the ship and had been ill with a fever for weeks. His broad chest still bore the faintest scar. Compared to the many thicker, jagged scars he bore, it was scarcely worth noticing, yet it was the one he remembered most clearly.

He'd learned quickly about the brutality of life. The years had molded the naive child who charged into his first battle seeking glory into a man who defined glory to his people. Years of training with heavy weapons, riding, and sailing had provided Wyborn with a body as hard and defined as an arctic glacier. In spite of his physical attributes, Wyborn was intelligent enough to know that brute strength might make a warrior, but not a leader. He strove for complete power of mind and body. In silence, he had listened to masters of strategy and absorbed all they told him. He observed his friends and his enemies. Nothing escaped his shrewd eyes, and he was not above admitting his own ignorance to learn from someone more knowledgeable and experienced. His closest companions often teased him for being too silent and serious, yet they never pushed him very far. In spite of his lenience for those he liked or admired, everyone knew of his ruthlessness when he was provoked.

"So what do you think this bride of yours will be like?" Kell, Wyborn's closest friend, shoved his straggly auburn hair from his face and looked at his leader. "Short and scrawny like her male counterparts?"

Wyborn's gaze didn't move from the shoreline. "We'll find out when we see her."

"I can't believe you're going to settle here. Do you know how bored you'll be? You'll have to send for Hallye for diversion."

At the mention of the woman from his village who had been chasing him since childhood, Wyborn's annoyed gaze shifted to Kell. "If you ever bring that woman here, I'll cut your sword arm off at the shoulder. Mark me."

"After you get a look at this other woman, you might be wishing for Hallye."

"Hey, what's he doing?" A warrior several feet from Kell pointed to a small, one-man boat approaching their fleet. The man on board was tall and thickly built. His gray hair hung in a wild tail over his broad shoulders.

Several archers raised their weapons, but Wyborn held up his hand for them to hold their fire.

"Wyborn!" called the man on the ship. "I must talk with you. It's me, Erik."

Wyborn's solemn lips curved upward in the slightest smile as he recognized the gravely voice and scarred face of his father's oldest friend.

"Get him," Wyborn ordered Kell.

Within moments, Wyborn and Erik stood in relative privacy. The wind blew froth from the churning waves onto their faces while Erik described the violent welcome awaiting Wyborn's army. When the older man finished, he stared intently at the warrior chief, awaiting his reaction.

Finally Wyborn said, "I appreciate your loyalty, but I'm not a fool. I was expecting rebellion. My men are prepared to take the shore in full armor with weapons ready. I have another troop coming by land from the opposite side. We've gauged everything so that both parties will arrive at the same time. Your settlement will be surrounded. If Bodin has as much brains as he has nerve, he'll surrender."

"What about the ones who've followed him? Not all of them are bad men."

"They need leadership. Believe me, they'll have it."

Erik watched Wyborn carefully. "I didn't only come here out of respect for you, but also for the Lady Marion."

"What of her?"

"She's a good woman. She's intelligent and strong. She deserves to be treated well."

Wyborn nodded. Though he didn't need anyone telling him how to care for his new bride, he sensed that Erik had respect and affection for the woman. For the rough, old warrior to speak so highly of her said much about her character. For the first time he felt the kindling of genuine interest in meeting the Lady Marion.

Hi, Everyone!

Hope you had a terrific month of May. Mine was pretty quiet. I spent most of it working on two new vampires stories.

I'm pleased to have Elayne S. Venton as this month's guest author. Elayne is the author of several erotic romances, including the Bonds of Justice series from Changeling Press and Diving In from New Concepts Publishing. To learn more about Elayne and her books, read her interview below.

This month I'm happy to announce the release of Infernal, part of the Ancient Blood series from Ellora's Cave. Also tentatively scheduled for release this month is Sating the Lust God from Changeling Press. It's a paranormal story with vampire elements. If you'd like to read an excerpt, one has been included below.

Remember to stop by the contest page on my website (http://www.kate-hill.com/co.html) and enter The Chieftain's Bride Contest. The deadline for the contest is June 10, 2005 and the prize is a sterling silver Viking ship charm.

Have a great month!

A mortal woman must fall in love with both the lust god and his host. Only then will Chand be permanently trapped in the netherworld and Kabir set free.

After more than a century of waiting, Kabir believes he has finally found a woman with the strength and compassion to love two such opposite mates, but how will she react when she learns that they dwell within the same body?

GUEST AUTHOR ELAYNE S. VENTON

KH: As a writer, you must often have several characters running around in your head asking you to write their story. How do you decide which one you'll write about next?

ESV: My stories begin with one particular scene in my head. Sometimes that scene doesn't make it into the final result, but the characters are born from it. Usually the character with the most angst, hence the most plot, gets my attention.

KH: What do you like best about writing romances?

ESV: I like transforming a head-butting couple into lovers and then watching them discover their hearts. It's very satisfying.

KH: Do you ever find love scenes difficult to write?

ESV: I can usually run through the basic scene easily. Then I have to go back and spice it up and make sure I'm not redundant or cliché. Yes, it's difficult.

KH: Would you tell us about your latest release?

ESV: My series, Bonds of Justice, are futuristic stories that revolve around heroes who don't necessarily work for law enforcement, although some do, but who definitely set out to right a wrong. The latest novella is "Rapture", the story of a chemist who lost his wife to a drug he created, a lethal aphrodisiac now in the hands of sex slavers. He sets out to avenge his wife's death and becomes consumed by the task. It takes the love of a slave he frees from the drug's awful grip to free the hero from self-destruction.

KH: Would you tell us about your upcoming projects?

ESV: Currently, I'm working on the third novella in the Bonds of Justice series. The setting returns to Callisto, one of Jupiter's moons, where the characters in all the books have a connection to a place called Healing Waters. Several women there have disappeared and the owner brings in Dragen, a gorgeous man with special talents, to help resolve the problem. Upon arrival, he's surprised to find a female, Julliet, from his home planet whose aura indicates she's his mate. She doesn't see him in the same light. As a matter of fact, she's sure that a perfect male specimen like him would have no real interest in a scarred female like her. The threat of a kidnapper will ultimately lead her to her fate.

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

ESV: I'd like to meet Thea, the heroine from Blade's Decree. She's a twenty-first century cop who is thrust into the future and the arms of a very sexy, bad-boy gone good. Blade has some hot friends I'd like to meet too

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

ESV: He's strong both emotionally and physically yet "human". He's not perfect yet his sense of honor and protectiveness outweighs his flaws.

KH: Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

ESV: Readers can read excerpts and reviews of my books at http://www.esventon.com

KH: Thank you, Elayne!

NEXT MONTH'S GUEST AUTHOR: MARTEEKA KARLAND http://www.marteekakarland.com

EXCERPT FROM SATING THE LUST GOD BY KATE HILL
from Changeling Press

Her anger and hurt turned to hatred. Why had she come to the temple? Finally she realized what a fool she had been to give up her entire life for a stupid dream.

His hand moved from her hair to her face. Cupping her chin, his gaze fixed on hers. Those harsh golden eyes narrowed slightly and a hint of emotion darted through them. Slowly, he began caressing her face. His hands stroked her cheeks and forehead. He ran a fingertip over her lips, then caressed her throat with feathery touches that soothed her in spite of her rage. His second set of hands entangled in her hair, his fingers threading through it with a lover's gentleness.

Tamanna's eyelids fluttered and drooped. His touch was like a powerful potion, lulling yet arousing her at the same time. Before she knew what was happening, her eyes closed and she followed the gentle tug of his four hands. Something velvety soft yet incredibly hard brushed against her cheek, then her lips.

She instinctively knew it was his cock. Her eyes still closed, she groped for it. Two of his hands guided hers around the staff. It was long and thick, the skin soft and carried a faint, masculine scent that instantly made her wet. She moistened her lips with her tongue before taking his cock head into her mouth. Her tongue swirled around it, lapping the tantalizing crown. She licked the underside, then sucked it gently.

"Harder, lovely one," he said.

Unable to resist, she did as he ordered, drawing him deeper and deeper into her mouth until his cock brushed the back of her throat. After several moments, he withdrew almost to the tip so she could once again explore the crown of his erection.

Now completely involved in her task, she lapped and sucked while running her hands along the shaft, squeezing and stroking at varying speeds. One of her hands reached down and cupped as much of his sac as she could fit into her palm.

A low groan escaped his throat and the sound of it seemed to strike her in both her heart and her pussy. Her breathing was much quicker now, and her nipples ached nearly as much as her clit. Though her legs still trembled, it was no longer with fear, but with passion. She wanted to feel his hard cock plunging deep inside her, yet she couldn't tear her mouth away from its carnal duty. Licking and sucking him was far too arousing.

Two of his hands were buried in her hair, holding her close to his thrusting pelvis while his other two reached down and fondled her breasts.

Tamanna whimpered around his cock, sobs of pleasure bubbling from her throat as he tenderly pinched her nipples. His expert hands squeezed her breasts, then lifted their weight while rolling his thumbs over their pebble-hard tips.

Between the pleasure of sucking his cock and the marvelous sensation of his hands on her breasts, she was on the verge of climax. How could she possibly come before he did? By rights he should have already exploded from the force of her attack on his staff, but he was still hard as a rock and other than an occasional groan of delight, seemed in perfect control of his body.

He pushed her away. Panting, she stared up at him. His pupils were dilated, his nostrils slightly flared, and his lips parted. His chest rose and fell rapidly and Tamanna might have smiled with satisfaction if she hadn't been overwhelmed by need.

"Come," he said, grasping her arm and tugging her toward the bed. "On your back. Close to the edge."

Quivering with passion, she climbed onto the bed and lay at the foot of it, her legs hanging off the end. It wasn't very high off the ground, so when he knelt and guided her legs around his waist, his cock slid into her easily. Though he had moved rather quickly, she was very wet and there was little discomfort. His swiftness did take her by surprise, however, and she cried out, as much from shock as from desire.

He paused, his hips remaining still while he waited for her to fully adjust to his entry. After a moment, she relaxed a bit, though her entire body still trembled and her heart pounded like she'd run for miles. Through half closed eyes she watched his hands caress her breasts. A hand slipped under her buttocks. A finger pushed between her bottom cheeks and pressed against her sphincter. Tamanna panted. Blood pounded through her entire body. Surely the sensations couldn't get any better than this?

Oh, yes, they could! His fourth hand reached between them, tracing the joining of his cock and her pussy, gathering some of her feminine dew with his fingertip. He then used the slick digit to rub her clit while he shifted his hips, his cock thrusting into her.

Closing her eyes, Tamanna gasped and writhed. Every sexually sensitive area was being stimulated at once. Even in her dreams, pleasure had never been this good.

Her head arched back, every muscle in her body tense. She knew she couldn't hold out. Not like this.

"Cry out," he demanded, his voice raw and even deeper than before. "Shout for me, lovely one."

"Ah," Tamanna shrieked. Over and over she moaned and sobbed while her body thrashed and he continued stroking and thrusting. Pussy, ass, clit, and breasts were all stimulated at once. "Great Chand, oh please. Please! Please!"

His thrusts came faster and harder. Tamanna was no longer aware of anything but the pleasure coursing through her from head to toe.

With a savage cry, she came. Her back arched off the bed and her breasts thrust hard against his hands. Massive pulsations broke over her, stealing her breath.

Chand's attentions never ceased. His hands and cock drove her body until the very last spasm shook her.

Tamanna lay, stunned, her eyes closed, her chest heaving with each ragged breath. Her hands and legs trembled for several moments. Finally her pulse slowed and she gathered the strength to open her eyes.

Still kneeling, his stiff cock buried deep inside her, Chand smiled slightly. Sweat misted his handsome face and glistened on his chest.

"Recovered?" he asked.

"I. . . I'm not sure," she murmured.

He smiled wickedly and thrust his hips, slowly, rhythmically. Though Tamanna had been certain the orgasm she had just experienced had drained her for the night, his motions began to stir her desire again.
