GUEST AUTHOR: J. C. WILDER

You're known for your sensual vampire stories. What is it about vampires that inspires you?

I've always had a soft spot for the bad boys and let's face it, vampires are the ultimate bad boy. Without even opening the book the reader knows they're in for a dark, sensual read as that is the legacy of the vampire - how could I not be inspired?

You've been a part of epublishing for a long time. Your well known vampire romance One With The Hunger was one of the first ebooks I ever read back in the late nineties. How do you think the world of epublishing has changed over the years and do you see it continuing to grow in the future?

Comparing the epub world now and five years ago is like comparing apples and oranges. When my first book came out in June of 1998 I didn't even know what epublishing was. Now most people who are readers have at least heard of it. The explosion of book sales for epublishing is nothing short of phenomenal. In the beginning we were happy to make a hundred dollars a month from one title now there are any number of authors who write full time on epublishing sales only, myself included. I think once the cheaper, more reliable ebook readers hit the market that the sky is the limit.

Would you tell us about your newest release?

I actually have two recent releases. In June ELLORA'S CAVEMEN: TALES FROM THE TEMPLE II was released. My novella is entitled ONE NIGHT STAND and it takes place in the Shadow Dweller world. It is a vampire story and it is hot, hot, HOT! Here is a short blurb:

Lucius deVille had the face of an angel and the body of an unrepentant sinner. He was the kind of vampire every woman dreamed of calling Lover at least once in her life. He was the proverbial tall, dark and handsome male that was the fantasy of millions of women around the world and to top it all off, he was educated and possessed a wicked sense of humor that had charmed more than one woman out of her panties. Tonight, Rachel was determined to claim Luc as her own. For the evening, at least.

My July release is an anthology entitled IN MOONLIGHT and it is about three witches. My novella is entitled FULL MOON MAGICK and it is another hot read. It also takes place in the Shadow Dweller world and the hero is the half-brother of Quinn from REDEMPTION. here is a short blurb:

Esme Proctor is the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter in a legendary lineage of witches. Betrothed at a young age, she is whisked off to live in near solitude until the morning of her marriage. Desperate to escape her upcoming nuptials, she conjures a lover to take her virginity and free her from the betrothal contract.

Only things don't work out quite as she'd expected....

You write under different names and for several different publishers. Would you talk a little about your books that are available through each of the publishers?

I have two pen names, J.C. Wilder and Dominique Adair. The Adair name is strictly used for Ellora's Cave titles while the Wilder name will appear at EC and LTDBooks.com.

I started out with LTDBooks in 2001 with the Shadow Dweller Series. This series takes place in a dark, preternatural world where a very bad vampire is struggling to gain control of the Council of Elders, the ruling body of the Shadow Dwellers. Currently there are six books with the seventh coming in December. I also have the PARADOX series with Rosemary Laurey. These are erotic fantasy novellas with a different theme for each edition. In September PARADOX III will be out and the theme is stone - these are some Hot stories! I also have DREAM QUEST, an anthology that Linnea Sinclair and I edited together and it came out last year.

For Ellora's Cave I have a vampire novella, LAST KISS that is included in the DARK DREAMS anthology. I also have several bondage and submission stories in the TIED WITH A BOW and PARTY FAVORS anthology.

Would you give us a sneak peak at some of your upcoming projects?

Boy do I have a lot of projects coming up. My 2004 release schedule is:

July - IN MOONLIGHT (ellorascave.com - Wilder title) erotic witch anthology

September - PARADOX III (ltdbooks.com - Wilder title) erotic omnibus with a theme of stone, my hero is a gargoyle

October - THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT, IV (ellorascave.com - Wilder title) erotic were-cat story set in the Shadow Dweller world - this novella starts off my new series

November - RSVP (ellorascave.com - Adair title) erotic bondage and submission story set in the bayou of Louisiana

December - EYE OF THE STORM (ltdbooks.com - Wilder title)

For 2005 I have seven releases coming up! Yikes, I'm tired just thinking about it.

To you, what makes a great romance hero?

Honesty, loyalty and the ability to trust him. People make a big deal about big, burly pectorals and the hero being a hunk, I'm more interested in his strength of character than the strength of his arms.

If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

Valentin from ONE WITH THE HUNGER. Probably because he was my first published hero and I just adore him. He's handsome, quirky and just a fun vampire. :)

Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

Sure thing. My websites are:
http://www.jcwilder.com
http://www.romancewithabite.com
and my email address is wilder@jcwilder.com

Excerpt from FULL MOON MAGICK from IN
MOONLIGHT, coming from ellorascave.com in July 2004

Esmerelda Proctor stared at the wedding gown in absolute horror. The white silk and tulle creation was nestled in a bed of ivory tissue paper in an oversized cardboard box closely resembling a coffin. The bodice and long fitted sleeves were covered in delicate seed pearls, glittering crystals and yards of Brussels lace. The voluminous tulle skirt was barely restrained by the yards of tissue paper wrapped around it. At the bottom of the box, her mothers wedding tiara was nestled in its own bed of tissue paper next to dainty silk slippers. Her eyes slid shut and a feeling of impending disaster washed over her. Maybe it was a mistake and shed imagined the gown on her bed. A half-laugh, half-sob escaped and her hands fisted. She took a deep breath and slowly released it before allowing herself to open her eyes.

The gown was still there.

Drat.

Fashioned for her great-great grandmother, the original Esmerelda, the gown was fit for a princess and, despite its age, was as pristine as the day it was first worn. Her great-grandmother, Angelina, had worn the dress as had her grandmother, Brianna, and finally her mother, Carolan. It was part and parcel of being the seventh Proctor daughter of a seventh Proctor daughter legacy. She, Esmerelda Julianna Proctor, was the last of her line and destined to wear this dress.

Only shed been hoping it wouldnt be this soon. Her lips twisted. Not to mention that fact that the dress would never fit her without magical assistance. Carolan had been a sleek sized eight while Esme was a sturdy sized sixteen. She sighed again, poked at a sleeve and felt something stiff tucked into the edge of the box.

A thick cream linen envelope peeked out from the layers of cloth and paper. She picked it up and her stomach plummeted. The paper was obviously expensive and on the back was her fathers seal, a raven with a dagger clutched in its claws.

She broke the scarlet wax with a fingernail, tipped the envelope over and a cassette tape fell out. Her hand trembled as she picked it up and hurried to her stereo to shove it into the player. She pushed the play button.

Esmerelda. Her fathers voice sounded from the speakers. The day has come for you to fulfill your duties to your family and marry the Montgomery heir as was set forth in the betrothal contract. By now youve received the wedding gown and everything youll need for the ceremony. The car will pick you up Saturday morning at 10am and the ceremony is set for 10:45am sharp. If anything is missing or does not fit properly, have Shani contact my assistant and they will take care of the issue. There was a slight pause and the sound of a heavily indrawn breath.

Do not disappoint me.

EXCERPT

Excerpt From Blood and Soul 1: Vampire Master by Kate Hill
(Coming in July 2004 from http://www.changelingpress.com)

Onan led her through the back of the room to a black door with an outline of an androgynous figure painted in red. A thorny vine wrapped around the figure from throat to foot. Oh yes. This Zigor was definitely into image. When she got up there, he'd probably have music from some Goth band playing in the background. Everything would be in black and red velvet.

If she really believed he was a big phony, why was her mouth dry and her pulse racing?

Opening the door, Onan stepped aside and gestured for her to ascend the long, narrow staircase. A single torchlight glowed at the very top. A most erotic scent struck Mel like a fist. God, it was wild, savage, pure yet tainted by thousands of years of decadence. It wrapped around her like a hundred invisible hands, caressing her breasts and pinching her nipples. It dipped between her legs and slid deep into her pussy. Stroking, licking, promising fulfillment of her darkest dreams.

Mel tore herself away from the incredible sensations. "Do I leave this way when it's over?"

"From now on, the Master will tell you all you need know."

"Sure." Drawing a deep breath, Mel walked up the first step.

The door closed behind her and the lock turned.

Mel heard no sound except that of her breathing and an occasional tap of her booted feet on the stone steps. The walls were also made of stone. The dimness was comfortable to vampiric eyes, yet Mel was not the least bit relaxed. How could she be? Who knew what awaited her up there? She didn't hear a single note of that Goth music she had expected. The only sound coming from the top of those steps was that of crackling flames.

With each step, her heart seemed to pound louder in her ears. Such fearful anticipation was humiliating for any vamp worth her salt.

"Hello?" Slowly, she neared the top of the steps. "Zigor?"

Releasing a deep breath, she took the last step and glanced around a large stone room, empty except for manacles and shackles dangling against the wall to the right of an enormous fireplace. Flames leapt inside, the stones behind them black with soot.

Hell. This place reminded her of what Hell must look like.

That marvelous scent was so strong here. It was the powerful aroma of a very old vampire. Zigor.

Suddenly she felt as if two hands had cupped her breasts beneath her clothes. Mel jumped, startled. Her gaze fixed on an archway to the right leading to another room. It was bathed in utter blackness. Even a vampire would take time to adjust to such darkness.

Those invisible hands were caressing her nipples now, turning them, rubbing them in circles. Mel's breathing increased. Passion rolled through her pussy, dampening it. Her clit throbbed mercilessly, so much that when she rocked her hips the slightest bit, the friction of her jeans against the sensitive flesh threatened to hurl her into orgasm.

"Zigor?" She fought to keep the passion from her voice, difficult when her entire body teetered on the verge of climax. Gritting her teeth, she fought for control of herself.

"You have not been given permission to call me by name."

Mel's eyes closed involuntarily. Raw desire broke over her just from the sound of his voice. It was deep, the words slow and dripping with power. It was the voice of virility itself.

"Isn't it better than calling you 'hey you'?" she breathed.

The invisible fingers on her nipples pinched them a bit too hard for her taste. She gasped. "Hey!"

"Silence, woman."

"Look, I didn't come here to-"

"Of course you did. I've seen you here many times before, sitting down at the bar, sipping blood from a glass instead of from a warm, throbbing artery. I've watched your eyes darken in lusty daydreams of things you want but have been too afraid to seek."

"So you do spy."

"I said silence." Arms wrapped around her waist and pressed her close to a man's chest that seemed made of cold marble, yet she was still alone in the room. Zigor possessed strong telepathic skills. Apparently he was powerful enough to enter her mind without her realizing it until he began fondling her in any way he saw fit. The unfamiliar sensation of vulnerability tightened Mel's belly. She was a fairly good telepath, but no match for him. Now that he was in her head, there was no way to get him out until he decided to leave.

"Good. You recognize your superior."

"Just as a telepath."

"You want to play. To tease me, but this isn't a game, woman. It's life. Without each other's blood, we cannot live. It is rare that a vampire female comes to me. Most of them like to float in the river of their power, fearful of giving that up so that they can be filled with the joy only an ancient vampire male can offer them. I can fill you. Thick. Hard. Thrusting against every soft, wet inch of your woman's flesh until you collapse from passion."

Shit. This guy was good. Ripples of pleasure coursed through her from head to toe, not only due to the sound of his deep, testosterone sparked voice, but because his telepathic fingers were buried deep in her pussy while his thumb circled her clit over and over.

"You want to share this with me. The scent of your lust is heavy on the air. It's sharp and strong, yet feminine. If your honey smells this sweet, I long to taste it. I want to roll my tongue inside you. My teeth ache to fondle your swollen clit before I suck it and lave it until you burst like a star at the end of its life. That end is good. It is beautiful. Just as you will be."

"You want to kill me?"

"I will allow you to ask that question. Yes, I want to kill you with passion and pleasure. When it's over, you will be quite alive but forever changed. Then and only then will I decide if you may come to me again."

GUEST AUTHOR: LANI AAMES

How long have you been writing?

As long as I can remember. Writing with intent to publish, about 7 years. I was first published in 2000.

What is your favorite romance sub-genre?

Historical romance and any time period paranormal.

Would you tell us about your latest book?

ETERNAL PASSION released in early June from Ellora's Cave. Jo is waiting for her best friend and trying to ignore the handsome stranger at the bar. She succeeds until her ex-boyfriend comes in with his new girlfriend on his arm. She doesn't want them to think she's sitting there all alone, so she goes up to the handsome stranger and kisses him, asking him to play along. He plays along quite nicely. :) They are attracted to one another and spend the night together. Next day, Jo finds out her best friend has been killed, all of the blood drained from her body. When Vincenz confesses to Jo he's a vampire, Jo assumes he killed her friend. Now, Vincenz has to convince her he didn't by finding out who the real killer is.

Would you give us a sneak peak of some of your upcoming projects?

I have an Amber Kiss, GILLIAN'S ISLAND, coming out September 1 from Amber Quill Press
http://www.amberquill.com

GILLIAN'S ISLAND is a contemporary with paranormal elements. Two couples are stranded on the deserted side of an island when a storm capsizes their boat. Gillian's ankle is hurt so she and Brandt remain behind while Paige and Tony cross the island looking for help. Gillian and Brandt use the time alone to explore their deepest desires while Paige and Tony run into problems with their relationship as well as the terrain. And with Gillian's help, two lovers reunite after being separated for centuries.

I have a novella, MOONSTONED, coming out in October from Amber Quill Press as part of their new AmberPax. Five novellas, written by various authors, on the same theme are released at one time. They can be purchased separately or all together at a discount. The first AmberPax theme is "Creatures of the Night".

MOONSTONED is a contemporary werewolf romance. It's about an ancient witch's curse and a moonstone necklace that reunites a couple. (I'm in the processing of writing this one now. It's difficult to say exactly what the story's about. It's already taken a completely different turn than when I started out! LOL)

My historical western, VALIANT, will be part of AmberPax "Wanted: Dead or Alive" coming out in early 2005.

VALIANT has no paranormal elements. Quade has returned to the town of Valiant, only to be arrested, convicted, and sentenced to hang for the murder of his uncle. Delaney has loved Quade since she was an adolescent and has been waiting years for Quade to return. She believes he didn't do it and sets out to prove it.

Interested readers can find out more about these at my website.

I have several other projects lined up to work on the rest of the year, including a story about a leprechaun and an April Fool's story. I'm taking a break from starting any new full-length novels and concentrating on short stories and novellas for now.

I want to add that all of these are erotic romance. That's what Lani writes. *g*

And I want to put in a plug for my Greek myth novel IMMORTAL CONQUEST, writing as Lanette Curington. This one has been on the backburner for several years. It is almost completed, and I'm determined to finish it this summer! The first few chapters can be read at my website.

To you, what makes a great romance hero?

To me a great romance hero is a man who is courageous enough and tough enough to handle whatever situation comes up, yet he's man enough to be tender with the heroine.

If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

Out of all the characters I've ever written--J'Qhir from STARKISSED, writing as Lanette Curington, and available from Amber Quill Press. J'Qhir is an alien who really looks like an alien. I like to say he's upright, bipedal, with opposable thumbs, but he can't pass for a human. LOL Even his...um, *equipment* is different.

Out of the ones I've written as Lani Aames--Mace from DESPERATE HEARTS. This is the only non-paranormal I have published, so far. He's a man caught in a difficult situation and tries to repair it by doing the right thing, even at the cost of his own heart's desire.

Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

Yes, I do. I can be reached at lani@laniaames.com and my websites are http://www.laniaames.com and
http://www.lanettecurington.com

Thank you, Lani!

You're welcome, Kate. It's been a pleasure. Thank you for having me.

Excerpt from ETERNAL PASSION:

Before she could take a step, the front door swung open and who should enter but Noah Blakely and his new girlfriend, the bimbette he had dumped Jo for. It had been six months...well, longer than that because he had been seeing the bimbette on the side for who knew how long. Jo had never asked and didn't want to know. Secretly, she had hoped it wouldn't last, but they were still together. Jo already knew this. In a town like Shadow Valley, word would have reached her if they'd split.

Even though Noah had been a jerk about the whole thing, Jo couldn't help but think of all the plans they'd made. They had wanted a spring wedding, three children three years apart, and if they kept to a budget, they could open their own business within five years.

After a time, she had come to realize that those were *her* plans and Noah had just gone along with them. Why had he pretended to share her dreams when all he wanted was a blonde bimbette with dark roots and a bad boob job on his arm?

The saddest part was that she hadn't bothered to move on. It had hurt so badly, she never wanted to chance being hurt again. Now, six months later, Noah was enjoying his life, and Jo was stagnating in the past.

No man on her arm either.

She had been incredibly lucky up until now in that she hadn't run into Noah. He had never liked Casey's and felt that the establishment was beneath his station in life. She should have known her luck would run out one day. How could she walk across the room, knowing that Noah and Bimbette would think she left because of them? How could she move in any direction without drawing attention to herself and the fact that she was alone?

Movement at the bar caught her eye. The hunk had stood and set aside his half-filled glass.

Jo turned in his direction and plastered on a big smile. She hurried to the end of the bar and when she drew near, his black brows rose in question. He looked startled. Next, he would look shocked. Laughter bubbled up inside her. She had never done anything as impulsive and daring as what she was about to do.

She threw her arms around him and leaned in close, whispering in his ear."Play along, please. I'll explain later."

Then she kissed him.

He might have been shocked, but he kissed her back.

Now, it was Jo's turn to be shocked. His lips willingly slid over hers and his tongue delved between them, sweeping through her mouth. He went above and beyond the call of duty when his arms encircled her waist and his hands slipped down the small of her back to cup her rear, fingers pressing into her flesh. He drew her closer with one sharp tug, her hips buffeting his,and she shuddered at the intensity of her response.

Her body melded with his. She was all too aware of his erection, hard and hot, pushing into her, seeking entrance between her thighs. Jo felt as if he was making love to her right there, in front of Noah and everybody, through their clothing.

I hope you had a great month of August. The summer is coming to a close and Autumn is on the way. I don't know if any of you are like me, but Autumn is my favorite month, mostly because my favorite holiday is Halloween. In honor of Halloween, I will be planning a special contest on my site, so watch out for that next month. I'll be sure to include details in the next newsletter. Also in October, I hope you can join me in this group's chat room on Saturday October 2 from 9 pm to 10 pm EST for a Halloween chat. Actually, we can talk about anything you want, not just Halloween, but I'll be doing some Halloween giveaways during the chat, including a gift pack and two downloads.

This month's guest author is Angelique Armae, a talented writer in several genres. Read her interview below to learn more about Angelique and some of her books.

Also below are blurbs for two of my upcoming novellas, Blood and Soul 3: Vampire Guardian and Demon Lover, both coming soon from http://www.changelingpress.com. There's also an excerpt from Vampire Guardian.

A new serial will be starting in October. It will be a full length novel called "Blaze." Blaze is a secondary character who has appeared in each book of the Knights of the Ruby Order series. The novel chapters will be added to the files section of this group in a folder called "Blaze." I hope you will enjoy the story!

Happy reading, everybody, and I hope you have a wonderful month of September!

GUEST AUTHOR: ANGELIQUE ARMAE

What do you like best about writing romance novels?

I love the happy endings! What other career can you think of that always has a happy ending to every project?

You've written many vampire stories. What appeals to you most about vampire characters?

I love the dark, brooding character. There's something sexy about a bad boy, especially a vampire. He's like an ultimate danger, yet you know he has a warm heart, even if he doesn't always know it :-) To me, vampires represent the dark side in all of us, the tough facade on the outside, but the tender soul on the inside.

Would you tell us about your most recent release?

I have a short story, an erotica written under my pen name M.A. duBarry. It's titled JUST DESSERTS and is about a Scottish vampire and Viking princess. The story line takes place during the dark ages and present day.

Would you tell us about some of your upcoming projects?

I have a six book vampire series coming from ImaJinn Books. The series it titled NIGHTWATCH and it's co-written with award winning author Candace Sams. I'll be doing the three historical novels and Candace will be handling the three contemporary sequels. The first two books of our series will be out sometime before the end of this year.

To you, what makes a great romance hero?

My ultimate hero is a dark, dangerous man who isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in. But he also has to have a softer side to him. He has to eventually come round to the heroine and he most open his heart. I want the dark lord by day/out in the world and the romantic guy at night/behind closed doors :-)

If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

Actually, my favorite character comes from a book I haven't shopped around yet. He's part Grigori angel and part mortal. His name is Nicholai Valentine and I am absolutely in love with him. Haven't decided if I want to share him with the rest of the world yet! As an author, I get very protective of my heroes! Oh, I guess that's not really fair to him, huh? OK, I'll shop him around real soon. He's very dark and dangerous, but he's also been through a lot so he needs a few readers to take him into their hearts.

Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

Absolutely and I love hearing from my fans! http://www.angeliquearmae.com

Thanks for interviewing me!

EXCERPT FROM BLOOD AND SOUL 3: VAMPIRE GUARDIAN
COMING SOON FROM http://www.changelingpress.com

Drawing a deep breath, Woodrow returned to his room. The woman, halfway through the change, still lay on his bed. Cursing, Woodrow walked to the bathroom to freshen the damp cloth for her fever and found a note in Braille placed over the knob on the sink.

Forgive me, Master, but I would be a bad mentor for her. You are a better man than I am, and a better teacher than I will ever be. Please take care of her until she is able to care for herself. Hopefully, when and if we see each other again, youll no longer want to stake me as Im sure you do now. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Herb.

No. Woodrow crumpled the note in his fist. No, no, no. You useless brat, Herb! I wont do it. I will not do it. I owe that woman nothing. I didnt fuck her. I didnt bite her. I certainly didnt want to make her my companion for the next ten years. No. Absolutely not.

Loud, agonized moans beckoned him from the bedroom.

Damn. Woodrow curled his lip and trudged back to his unwanted charge. It was going to be a long, long night.

By the sounds of her moans and labored breathing, he knew she had fallen off the bed and onto the floor. Within seconds, his cane prodded her. Stooping, he tugged her into his arms. One of her flailing hands struck him in the face, knocking off his dark glasses. Her booted feet slammed into his hip and side. Tightening his hold, he carried her to the bed and dumped her onto it. She screamed, the piercing sound tearing through his sensitive ears. If he didn't shut her up, she would disturb everyone at Burgundy Peak. Clamping his hand over her mouth, he had no choice but to cover her body with his to restrain her jerking limbs. Foamy saliva seeped from her lips through his fingers. Her sweat drenched body dampened his shirt, but at the moment he didn't care about the disgust factor. Her scent was stronger than ever, as was her heartbeat. It pounded so violently that he knew the complete change was close at hand. These final moments would determine whether she lived or died. If vampiric power had truly taken hold of her mortal body, then she would endure the physical demands. If not, her heart would give out and she would die a mortal death. Usually the presence of one's creator played an important role in a new vampire's survival. Their physical and spiritual link could somehow reinforce the mortal's strength and keep her from slipping into death. Herb hadn't known this woman well enough to forge such a bond. He didn't care for her, therefore she was completely alone during this difficult changeover.

Pity suddenly overwhelmed Woodrow. Whether he liked it or not, this woman needed him. In spite of his better judgment, he could not abandon her.

For what seemed like hours he held her body firmly in place. Her every moan and shudder ripped through him.

Finally, she lay still.

Burying his face in the hollow of her neck, he closed his eyes. By the sound of birds chirping in the church rafters across the street, he knew it was dawn. The slow, strong beat of the woman's heart filled him, and he actually smiled. Her scent was now distinctly vampiric. If he could see, he knew her expression would be one of peace, as she was lost in the deep, exhausted sleep that followed the change.

For the first time, he became aware of her curves pressed intimately against him. Her body was trim, yet her breasts were full and soft. Their legs were entwined and their pelvises seemed to fit together perfectly. Woodrow's cock stiffened where it nestled between their bodies.

"God." He breathed, pushing himself off her and walking to the bathroom. Peeling off his shirt, he dropped it in the hamper and dampened another cloth. He returned to the woman and sat beside her, cleaning dried sweat and spit from her face. When he finished washing her, he gently ran his fingertips from her forehead to her chin. His sensitive pads learned the shape of her features. He saw her through his sense of touch and as he did, the oddest feeling tugged at his heart. To him, she was beautiful. Her eyebrows were sleek, narrow, and arched in the center. Her lashes were long and thick. In spite of her full face, her cheekbones were prominent. Never had he felt such soft, perfectly formed lips. Her short, snubbed nose tantalized his fingertips. The sudden urge to kiss her nearly overwhelmed him.

"Crazy." He stood and returned to the bathroom. "She's just a child, Woodrow. You need to find Herb so he can do his duty by her. She is not yours to touch, kiss, or teach."

Stripping off the rest of his clothes, Woodrow turned on the shower faucet and stepped beneath the steady stream of warm water. He scrubbed her fluids from his skin, yet her scent seemed to have become a part of him.

GUEST AUTHOR R. CASTEEL

KH: What do you like best about writing romance novels?

RC: Wow! No foreplay! Nothing like starting out with a hard one... I was referring to the question. What did you think I meant? Not sure if I can answer this with a quickie because so many aspects of writing, yes even the edits, are amazing. From the time a story idea comes charging into your mind with no regards to what you may or may not be working on at the time. To the characters who begin to slowly reveal them selves to you and become so real you talk to them as if they were. OR, how a story unfolds as I type, how the characters interact and respond to each situation. Probably the best and most amazing thrill of all is having someone say, "I read your book (fill in any title), and I enjoyed it, loved it, etc... very much."

KH: During your years in the Navy you must have traveled a lot. Do you draw many of your ideas for book settings, etc. from places you've visited?

RC: A couple books have: Both Crimson Rose & Mistress of Table Rock were from my time on the USS Saipan, flag ship for the Second Division Marines. This is the same division who was stationed in Beirut Lebanon in 1983, and the same type of ship used in the final chapters of Mistress of Table Rock. I tend to draw more on my training and experiences.

KH: Would you tell us about your story in the Forever Midnight anthology?

RC: Shadow Time Lover actually started out as a short, 5,000 word story contest I did just for fun on Romance at Heart website. The story grew from there. STL is set in Transylvania Mountains during the mid 1300's. Those of you not up on your Romanian history might be jumping to the wrong conclusion about the story. Here is a short blurb,

A man by day and a beast by night Philip has roamed the mountains of Romania for longer than he wants to remember. To break the witch's curse and set him free, a virgin's blood must be shed upon the Rock of Sacrifice. Will he ever find a woman with the courage to meet the beast?

Zolona is the last of her father's daughters to remain a virgin and the last hope for removing the curse from the land. Will her courage hold when face to face with the beast? If, she survives, what will become of her life?

Enter into the medieval world of lords and ladies, witch's curses, deceit and lies. A time when the future is laid on the alter for a chance to find happiness in the arms of her, Shadow-Time Lover.

KH: Would you tell us about some of your current and upcoming projects?

RC: I have three or is it four? Let's see, Currently working on a contemporary ghost story set around Chicago; a contemp set again in South Missouri this time with a ex biker turned lawman, a hot biker mama, and a motor cycle gang out for revenge; a western set in 1860 Colorado gold fields; and yes there is still the sequel to Taneika, Daughter of the Wolf. Kat and her sister from Tail of the Tiger, may show up again in a science fiction adventure I have had on the back burner for over a year. Damn, that's FIVE!

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

RC: That he makes it to the end of the book alive.

KH: How about a great romance heroine?

RC: Now there is a LOADED question if I ever saw one.

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

RC: They are all so real to me now, who's to say I haven't met them already? But I would like to know just why it took so long for one of my heroines to have sex with the hero, just because he is four years younger than she is. I want to tell her that she has been one sorry pain in my butt.

KH: Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

RC: www.rcasteel.net

Thank you, Rod!

GUEST AUTHOR ELIZABETH JEWELL

KH: What do you like best about writing romance novels?

EJ: I always enjoy capturing that unique energy that comes from two people coming together for the first time, discovering the *one* that makes his or her world more whole. Also, the underlying constant theme that love can conquer all.

KH: Your story in Forever Midnight from Ellora's cave involves a shapeshifter and you have a new vampire series at Changeling Press. What do you like most about writing paranormal romances?

EJ: The wideness and variety of the palette. The paranormal genre allows for such a wide gamut of unique stories, and if you set things up right, you can do darn near anything. Also, I think metaphorical elements are more easily explorable in paranormal, again because of the sheer weirdness of the kinds of things you can do.

KH: Would you tell us about your story in the Forever Midnight anthology?

EJ: "A Matter of Duty" is a sequel to the story "A Matter of Faces," which was my very first Ellora's Cave release, in the anthology "Shifting Faces." It's about Trey, a shapeshifter who can take on any human form of either gender, and his lover Piper, who are about to face one of the challenges of being a "mixed" couple--Trey's obligation to reproduce with another shapeshifter.

KH: Would you tell us about some of your current and upcoming projects?

EJ: The second volume in my "Dark Callings" series at Changeling, "Dark Callings II: Inamorata," was released on September 17th. That series continues, and I'm not sure what else I have in the wings at the moment. Stay tuned.

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

EJ:I like a strong hero who's willing to give way for the heroine, who's not rigid or controlling, but who has a more subtle masculine power. I don't care for the archetypical "alpha" hero--I'm more interested in a sort of alpha-beta-gamma combo package.

KH: How about a great romance heroine?

EJ: I prefer heroines who are strong, willing to stand up for themselves, and who can, if necessary, pull the hero's nuts out of the fire. She's not whiny or indecisive, and she's at least as strong emotionally as the hero.

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

EJ: Probably David Frasier, from Lady of the Seals. I have a soft spot for him for some reason.

KH: Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

EJ: http://elizabethjewell.kabeka.com

Thank you, Elizabeth!

EXCERPT FROM ELIZABETH JEWELL'S A MATTER OF DUTY FROM THE FOREVER MIDNIGHT ANTHOLOGY COMING SOON FROM http://www.ellorascave.com

He cupped her breast, his thumb pressing gently into her nipple, rolling it. Heat burgeoned in her at the touch. She shivered, warm, slick heat growing between her legs. She opened under him, embracing him with her legs. He settled down between her thighs, the hard ridge of his erection rubbing into her. God, but she wanted him inside. Now. Hard and fast.

Bending his head, he tongued her nipple, toying with the erect bud, scraping it gently with his teeth. He kissed down the side of her breast, to the valley between, then back up, until his tongue touched the other nipple. She closed her eyes as his tongue curled around her, feeling the soft friction, the slightly rough texture of his tongue. He sucked, laved, and fire flooded her, shooting down her body, straight to her groin. She pulsed there, her labia thick and heavy, her sex opening, ready. So hot, so deep

He lifted his head from her breast and lifted himself over her, his tongue trailing up her neck, over her chin. His lips brushed hers, ever so lightly. At the same time, his hand slipped down her stomach, moving her nightgown out of the way, his fingers moving under the elastic of her panties. She pushed up toward him, drawing his fingers down, almost into her. He opened his eyes, sapphire glinting from between golden lashes. A smile curved his mouth.

I want you, she murmured. You.

He smiled a little. She knew she perplexed him in her insistence that he maintain his usual form when they made love. He could be anyonethe Hollywood hunk du jour, her greatest fantasy, the man shed had a crush on in college He didnt understand why she so rarely took advantage of that.

She wasnt even sure she could have given him a coherent answer, if he ever came out and asked. It seemed wrong to her, though, to want this man and that man, and not the manthe face he chose to present to the worldwhen they shared these intimate moments. It was like cheating on him. Except with him

No point puzzling it all out, because it would never make any sense. Instead she closed her eyes and reveled in the sensation of his fingers gently invading her, separating the lips of her sex, dipping into the deep, hot core of her. She pushed her hips against him, drawing his fingers inside her. He put an arm around her shoulders and held her against him as she rode his hand, pounding herself down on him. He added a third finger, filling her deeply. Fire flooded her; he curled the tips of his fingers just so, finding the exact place inside her that made her entire body fill with harsh stilettos of desire.

Trey she managed, but even the single syllable was lost as her body suddenly clenched, leapt, then flew, orgasm ripping through her from cunt to fingertips. She let out a deep, ragged moan.

EXCERPT FROM SILVER CUFFS BY KATE HILL (FROM THE FOREVER MIDNIGHT ANTHOLOGY)

The wolf growled, his eyes blazing and his teeth gnashing the cold night air. Ice and snow flew beneath his paws. His heart throbbed with the insatiable need for vengeance.

Another more foreign emotion pulsed through him. Fear.

A shot exploded. The wolf shrieked as pain ripped through his shoulder. With a mighty lunge, he pounced on the cloaked, muskettoting man fleeing in the distance.

The wolf dragged the man onto his back and placed his paws on the heaving chest. Savage eyes stared into his captives terrified blue ones. Unable to speak in words, the beasts look demanded its desire. Where is she?

I dont have her, you evil bastard. Look for Stratford. Hes the one you want, the man bellowed.

The scents of other people filled the air. Hoofbeats thudded across the snow-packed countryside.

Then he caught it. Her scent. Turning in the direction of the woods, he saw her.

The wolf left his captive panting in the snow and raced for the dark-haired, brown-eyed woman. As she ran for him, a storm of bullets pierced the night. The wolfs high-pitched cries of agony stunned his attackers. Those shrieks were far too human.

Gunfire ceased. The white snow beneath the gasping wolf turned red with blood and his vision blackened.

No, no, no, she cried, her hands caressing his face.

Opening his eyes halfway, the wolf saw through the dimness and blur of impending death that her clothes were stained red.

He tried to speak, but the words would not come. Still, his emotions shone in his eyes. I love you.

I love you, she cried and buried her face in his thickly-furred neck. I love you.

GUEST AUTHOR SAPPHIRE WILLIAMS

KH: What is your favorite romance subgenre?

SW: I love historical romances, especially those set in Regency England and Scotland. Im a big fan of paranormals and fantasies and contemporaries basically, I love them all. Im not a big fan of sci-fi / futuristic or horror, but anything else is right up my alley.

KH: Would you tell us about your latest book?

SW: My most recently released book is a short contemporary romance titled Turning Thirty. An art gallery manager finds love with an artist. I wrote this book in a very short time and was surprised that that word count was so low. I usually dont write short books. ?

The next to be released later this month is the next in the Elemental Wizards Series, Age of Air. Ciro has found his mate in Regency England but Charis locked her heart away when her mother committed suicide after the death of her father. She sees love as a weakness and vows never to give anyone that much of her. Ciro has to break down those walls and teach her that love isnt a weakness, its the greatest strength of them all.

KH: What inspired you to write your Elemental Wizards series?

SW: I have always been interested in magic and myths and while searching through my filing cabinet, looking at ideas and books in progress, the Wizards came to life in my mind. I dont know what really triggered it, they were just suddenly there.

KH: Would you tell us about some of your current and upcoming projects?

SW: The next two books to be released after Elemental Wizards: Age of Air is the last two books in the series, both due out next year. After I finish those books, Ill be starting on the book that several people have asked for. Laird Mackenzies Curse will have a book to follow it and while LMC was originally meant to be a stand alone book, many people who read it wanted there to be a follow up book. Ive had ideas for two more to come.

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

SW: A strong and open heart. Ive read so many books where the hero takes forever to fall in love and then admit that hes in love that I like writing books where the hero falls fast and hard and forever.

KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?

SW: If I could meet one of my characters it would have to be Logan Mackenzie, the hero from Laird Mackenzies Curse. I have a special place in my heart for Highlanders.

KH: Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

SW: My website is: http://users.adelphia.net/~pebbles122/ and I love hearing from my fans and answer every email right away (when not on a deadline) They can email me at Sapphire_Williams@hotmail.com

Thank you, Sapphire!

EXCERPT FROM BLOOD AND SOUL: NUTCRACKER
(A Very Merry Changeling Christmas Short Story)

Onans heartbeat quickened when he saw the familiar writing on the red envelope. It was December 23rd, and he thought for once Christmas would pass without any contact from her. Strange that he was almost disappointed that she might have forgotten him. Each year he ignored her letter and never responded to the gift that always followed.

Drawing a deep breath, he stuffed the envelope between his other mail and ascended the stairs to his suite above the club where he worked. Burgundy Peak was a popular haven for vampires and Onan enjoyed his job as head of security. The club would be opening soon, and he liked to be waiting in the foyer when the first patrons stepped inside.

Upstairs, he walked to the end of the corridor and unlocked his door. Though Onan possessed several homes throughout the world, he preferred spending most of his time here in New York City. He certainly didnt need the job, but he enjoyed the atmosphere and knew the exclusive club required a security chief with a personal interest in the welfare of its owner and patrons. His Master owned Burgundy Peak. He and Onan were as close as two men could be without crossing the sexual line. They had been almost inseparable for years, but Master Zigor had recently taken a wife. While Onan was thoroughly pleased that his Master had found love, part of him envied Zigors marriage. Watching the couple made him long for the only woman he had ever truly loved.

Onan stepped into his suite and glanced around. While no vampires enjoyed too much brightness, he preferred his surroundings darker than most. His walls were painted deep green and the floor was of black tile. Several statues from ancient Nubia adorned the shelves lining the far wall, yet those reminders of his homeland didnt attract his attention. Four shelves filled with other ornaments captured his interest instead. Everything on those shelves had been made by the same woman whose letter he now avoided reading. There were Christmas elves, miniature rocking horses carved out of wood, and snowflakes of cut glass. She loved the Christmas season, and when they had been a couple, her enthusiasm had infected him as well. Since their split, his desire to celebrate the holidays faded more with each passing season.

Tearing his gaze from the shelves, he walked to the kitchen table and tossed the mail atop it. Curiosity about her letter ate at his gut. He got as far as the corridor before he returned to his suite, snatched the red envelope, and shoved it into the pocket of his trousers.

GUEST AUTHORS JACI AND CJ BURTON

KH: What inspired you to write TANGLED WEB together?

JB: Actually my readers were the inspiration. Since Charlie and I spend so much time together and he helps me with plotting and editing of my books, the readers asked if we'd co-write a book together.

CJB: Jaci had long been after me to co-author something with her and then a bunch of the readers on her Paradise Group joined her in badgering me to do it, so finally I said yes.

KH: What was the most difficult thing about co-writing a novel?

JB: Giving up part of the creative process to someone else. I wasn't used to that, having wholly 'owned' my characters and their actions before.

CJB: I don't recall it being very difficult since we are always together. Finding the time to work on it was probably the hardest part.

KH: What was the easiest thing?

JB: We're so in sync anyway that it was easy to let the story flow and the characters behave naturally. We never fought about character motivation at all.

CJB: Research ;P

KH: Would you tell us about TANGLED WEB?

JB: Tangled Web is a futuristic about a couple who meet via the internet. In Earth's future, physical passion is forbidden, all sex taking place via the internet. But when a government security specialist meets a rogue hacker online, sparks fly and eventually that electricity between them just has to be consummated in person.

CJB: Man/woman meet on internet have sex. Meet in person have better sex. Run from aliens and hide out with intention of overthrowing them later.

KH: Would you tell us about what upcoming projects you have together and individually?

JB: I'm still working on several series I have going, namely the Storms, Devlins and the Kismet series. Together we hope to write a sequel to Tangled Web next year

CJB: We will do at least one sequel to Tangled Web. I have no individual projects planned and probably never will. You have to drag me kicking and screaming to the computer to make me write anything more than nasty love notes to Jaci.

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?

JB: He has to have inner strength, honor, integrity, and an all consuming passion for the heroine. He also has to be strong enough to stand up to the heroine if necessary. After all, what self-respecting heroine would want a man who wimps out on her? ;)

CJB: Someone who is a man when it's necessary and is not afraid of a woman's abilities to be a person too.

KH: How about what makes a great romance heroine?

JB: She has to love the hero and him only, has to be strong enough to stand up to him, with goals and ambitions of her own. No wimps!

CJB: One who is her own person but not overbearing. Oh, and willing to be nasty don't hurt.

KH: Do you have a website and/or email address where readers can reach you?

JB: my website is www.jaciburton.com my email is jaci@jaciburton.com

CJB: charlie@jaciburton.com or I can usually be found hanging out at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JaciBurtonsParadise/ pestering the readers most days.

THANK YOU JACI AND CJ!

JB-CJB: You're welcome Kate

EXCERPT FROM BLOOD AND SOUL: INTIMATE RELATIONS

You lost a few things. He knelt beside her and dropped her clothes and jewelry.

Thank you. Reaching into the yellow satin bag beside her, she removed a handful of rose-scented incense and tossed it into the cauldron. The aromatic burst stirred him. Her entire seduction act thrilled him. This woman seemed to know exactly what he wanted, but why shouldnt she? Just as he had spent his life mastering seduction, she had done the same. She was too accustomed to being in control, and it was time she learned what it was like to surrender.

Unlike most of the women he had been with, blatant force would not make her bend, even if it meant giving up her chance for pleasure. Any man could force a woman to submit using his superior physical strength or mental abuse, but to make a woman surrender in a way that broke neither her body nor spirit was an art so few ancients understood.

He stood above her, his gaze fixed on hers. In spite of her cool veneer, lust glistened in her eyes. Her breasts swelled as she drew a deep breath.

Unzip me, he said.

She raised an eyebrow. Excuse me?

He smiled, and for several moments they stared at one another, a battle of wills. Both of them wanted relief from the passion consuming them, but neither was willing to make the first move. Thus far, Rolon had allowed her to take the lead. Now it was his turn, and he would suffer with a century long erection before giving in to her this time.

The slightest smile curved her pretty lips before she pushed herself to her hands and knees and crawled toward him in a shockingly submissive gesture. For a brief moment suspicion nearly overtook him, only to be forgotten when she positioned herself in front of him and unbuttoned his jeans, then used her teeth to tug down the zipper.
