A Horseman has the ability to shift from the body of a normal human male to that of half man and half winged horse. Since no female Horsemen exist, except in legend, the species must mate with human females. Some Horsemen find their mates through dream-sharing. When a Horseman and a woman experience such dreams, they are almost certain to mate for life. The son of a Horseman invariably shares his father's shapeshifting ability. Though a Horseman's daughter will not shift shape, she will most likely be strong, statuesque, and able to easily gain the trust of true horses.

While Horsemen need human women to survive, humans also depend on Horsemen. Rock Blood, the only cure for a plague that randomly sweeps villages, exists in just two locations: the frigid northern Spikelands and the sweltering tropics. Oceans of flesh-eating plants separate both places from the human settlements. Without Horsemen to fly them across the dangerous waters, humans would have no means of harvesting the Rock Blood.
